ARCHITECT : JOHN DENTON

John Denton is one of Australia’s best-known architects,


whose practice Denton Corker Marshall is

internationally renowned for aesthetic innovation and design


excellence. Denton was born in 1945 in Fiji,

John Denton completed his architectural and postgraduate


planning studies at the University of Melbourne.

In 1972, he founded Denton Corker Marshall, with Bill


Corker and Barrie Marshall in Melbourne, now one of the
most significant and successful Australian-owned
international design practices, with some 140 staff worldwide.

John’s principal interests in both architecture and urban design have shaped a range of projects
over many years. He lectures on Denton Corker Marshall’s work to schools of architecture,
professional institutes in Australia and abroad, and as a keynote speaker.

John has internationally recognised skills in the design and leadership of major institutional and
public building projects, evidenced through the practice’s significant number of national and
international awards for major buildings under his control, and by his personal contribution to the
advancement of architectural discourse in Australia.

John undertook the position of Victorian Government Architect between 2006 and 2008, advising
the Premier and Cabinet on achieving better architecture and urban design outcomes. He is
currently on the Victorian and South Australian Government Design Review Panels and has
recently been a member of the Expert Advisory Panel on Cities for the Council of Australian
Governments Reform Council (COAG) and the South Australian Government Integrated Design
Commission Advisory Board.

He is a former Chairman of the Australian Government Interim Advisory Board for the
establishment of the Creative Industries Innovation Centre in Sydney. He sat on the board of Board
of the Victorian Endowment for Science Knowledge and Innovation for eight years, retiring in
2012. He is Chairman of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and Past President of the
Australian Print Workshop.

In 1996, John Denton, Bill Corker and Barrie Marshall were each awarded gold medals by the
Royal Australian Institute of Architects, the most prestigious award the institute bestows.
