Good morning Grade 10 progressive. Good morning, ma’am Dianne! It’s

nice to see you again.

It’s a pleasure to meet you again too. Before we

start our activities for today, let us ask guidance
from our Almighty Creator, in the name of the
father, the Son, and of the Holy Spirit....
In the name of the father, the Son and of the Holy
Spirit, Amen.

Again Good Morning Grade 10 progressive! Good morning, ma’am Dianne!

Okay before you sit down, kindly pick up the pieces

of trash and litters that you can see here inside the
classroom. Yes, ma’am.

Now, take your seats. Thank you ma’am.

Okay class, how are you feeling today? We’re absolutely fine thank you.

That’s very good to hear. Do we have absentees

for today? There are no absentees as of
today ma’am. Everyone is present
and ready to listen.

Well that’s a head start. By the way, my whole

name is Ms. Diana Mebel Gida Fabrero. I am 19
years old, I am currently residing at Pola, Oriental
Mindoro and I will be with you for the whole
semester. You can call me ma’am Dianne, Ma’am
Mebel or whatever maybe convenient for you.

B. PRESENTATION

So last meeting, we had the discussion about the

story titled “How my brother Leon brought home a
wife”. Again, who is the author of the story? The author of the story that we
had last meeting is Manuel
Estabillo Arguilla.
Yes, Jeriel.

That’s correct. Thank you Jeriel. Okay, our lesson

last time was “How my brother Leon brought home
a wife by Manuel Estabillo Arguilla.

Can you tell me who the main characters are in the

story, Feby? Ma’am, the main characters in the
story are Maria, Noel or also
known as Leon, Baldo, Leon’s
younger brother and the Father of
Leon.

You are correct Feby. Thank you.

Now, what is the story all about, King? The story is all about Maria and
Noel, travelling to Leon’s rural
residence to introduce Maria to
Leon’s family; far from Maria’s
comfort zone which is the city life.
The story also depicted the
culture, the beauty, and majestic
sceneries of The Province of La
Union.

Very well said, King. Thank you.

So just like what King said, the story revolved on

the idea of introducing Maria to Leon’s family which
also showcased the vast sceneries in La Union. To
top it all off, the story about acceptance to oneself
in order to be accepted by the other people. Do you
understand class? Yes, ma’am. Everything is clear
and well understood.

Aside from the story that you read, we also had

another topic which is the Elements of Fiction.

What are again the elements of fiction, JP? The different Elements of Fiction
that we discussed last meeting are
Characters or the ones that acted
in the story, the setting or where
and when the story happened, the
plot or the summary of the story,
the conflict or the obstacles and
problems in the story and the point
of view or in what manner or
degree of the person telling the
story was.

Okay, Very good, JP. Thank you. So is everything

clear class? Yes, ma’am.

Are there other clarifications regarding our lesson

last meeting? Absolutely none, ma’am.

For this topic, all of you are expected to:

First, demonstrate active class participation, define
what critical reading, listening and viewing is, then
distinguish among the different types reading and
listening, compare and contrast the different terms
regarding critical reading, listening and viewing,
react on statements regarding social issues, also
to take stance regarding Social issues, then relate
the text read in their daily lives, and lastly, perrform
a short role play regarding Critical reading,
listening and viewing.

But before we enter our new lesson, we will play a

game. Are you up for games class? Yes, ma’am.

This game is very much familiar to you class. Our

game for today is “Bring me” But to make it more
engaging, we’ll add a twist on it.

I have prepared a mystery box for you at the back,

containing the things that I will command you to
bring to me.

The mechanics of the game is you will form a line,

from the shortest to the tallest student in your
class. Then, last player on the line will come near
me and pick a piece of paper here in the box. The
piece of paper contains the instruction of what you
should bring to me. The representative will then
relay the message from one member to another
until the player in front gets the message. The
player in front will then look for the exact things that
is told to her and bring them to me. Complete the
items commanded and earn a point. Reminder,
once you have relayed the message to the next
player, you cannot ask the preceding player. You
will be given 5 minutes to complete all the task
here inside my box. Did I make myself clear? Yes, Ma’am.

Are there questions regarding the mechanics? None. Ma’am.

Are you ready Grade 10 progressive? Yes, we are definitely ready,

Ma’am.

Now form your line and let our game begin.

Times’s Up!

You all did a great job in our game today. Everyone

participated well and was really determined to
finish the task. Thank you for participating
enthusiastically. Did you have fun class? Yes, Ma’am.

That’s great. Everyone give yourselves 5 claps.

Ready go!

Now fix your chairs and tables and return to your

seats. Yes, Ma’am.

Firm-Up

Okay class, while doing the activity, what are the

hardships and problems you experienced to finish
the task?

Can you share us your insights, Aisha. I think Ma’am, an obstacle that we
had is the ability to sequence and
pass the message properly. The
listening and memory recall plus
the time limit made it quite
challenging. But all in all, it was a
fun game.
Thank you very much Aisha. Class, Aisha made
mention of one of the macro-skills an individual
should possess.

What are again the 5 macro-skills that we need to

possess, Feby? The 5 macro-skills that one should
possess are listening, reading,
viewing, speaking and writing.

Very good, that’s all correct. Now, in our activity

earlier, what are the macro-skills that you used to
accomplish the task?

Let’s have you again, King. In the game that we had earlier,
we used our reading, listening,
and speaking skills.

Exactly. Thank you, King. So our new topic will be

dealing with 3 of the macro-skills mentioned
earlier. Our lesson is all about critical reading,
listening and viewing.

To start formally start our lesson, let me ask you

this queue question for you to answer later on as
we discuss, “Why is critical reading, listening, and
viewing important as an individual?”

I want to hear your answer, Feby. Ma’am they are important

because without having those
ability, more time and effort will be
exerted in doing task that needs
the incorporation those skills.

Correct. Thank you Feby. It is important to possess

critical reading, viewing and listening skills simply
because without it, we can never live a productive
and successful life may it be in our chosen
profession of our personal lives.

Okay, since our lesson would be more of the 3

macro-skills that we mentioned earlier, I have
prepared here a video regarding different social
issues here in the Philippines. Watch and listen
attentively for I will throw on some questions after
the video.

Did you understand the video, Class? Yes Ma’am.

Okay, Aisha, what social issues in the Philippines

did the video presented? The video showed clips about the
k-to12, population inflation, lack of
job opportunities, inequality of
rights and the lavish war against
drugs in the Philippines.

How did you feel upon viewing and listening in the

video clip, Aisha? I felt sad for the kids that were
supposed to be given chance to
go to school but because of
poverty, they are forced to work in
a very young age.
Thank you so much Aisha. Another, what about
you Jeriel? What did you feel after the watching
video? I felt somewhat terrified in the
current situation of our country.
Difference social issues arising
and not being cured makes me
feel sorry for our motherland.

Very good, thank you Jeriel.

I have prepared here a printed material that we will

discuss because some of the ideas here came
from other resources and not present in your book
so there’s no need to jot down notes from the
Presentation.

I have a question for you class, who among you

are visual learners or those who learns best when
a picture or visual representation is present? Raise
your hands.

What about auditory learners or those who learn

better when they actually hear what is being
taught?
Lastly, who are experiential learners who learns
more when they experience doing the things
learned hand on? In this lesson, you will be able to
strengthen your learning abilities through
understand more of critical utilization of such skills.

At this juncture, we’ll discuss critical reading,

listening, and viewing. These three macro-skills
are considered as passive skills because the
person doing the action is just taking information
and not giving a feedback about what he received.

So first, let’s have the critical reading.

Everybody read what Critical Reading is. Critical reading is the process of
analysing, synthesizing and
evaluating a text.

Now, who among you have Facebook, Instagram

or Twitter account here?

Okay everyone seems to be a social media savvy.

How do you react class, whenever you ran across
the so-called “fake news”?

How do you distinguish whether a text you are

reading is legit and reliable, JP. Whenever I encounter a fake
news in the internet especially in
Facebook, I am checking the
source or the author of the article
if he has a good and reliable
background.
That’s impressive! Thank you, JP.

What about you, King? Ma’am, I am very much keen in

observing the grammar
construction and the content itself
if it’s believable or not. Also, I opt
to check other sources with valid
track record of newsfeeds.

Now that’s a great validation strategy. Thank you,

King.
There are times that when we read, we tend to
forget checking important things that may lead us
believing false texts. To help us aid our critical
reading, we can use a tool called Reading Journal.

Are you familiar of a reading journal? Or is there

someone using a reading to jot down notes from
the article or text you read? Raise your hands.

Very good.

So, a reading journal is of course from the term

itself, is a journal for reading. What then, is the
content or how do we utilize in a reading journal?

First, read and understand the reading material

first hand, nevertheless, we won’t be able to use
the reading journal right?

What’s the next one, everybody read. Highlight or keep track of

important messages.

Highlighting or keeping track of important

messages is also a must when having a reading
journal. What comes after the tracking of important
messages is writing the initial reaction to the
selection. As you can see, while we are having the
reading journal, we do not only practice our
reading skills but also our writing skills. As we
utilize our reading journal, we are able to keeps
track also of our writing abilities which is like hitting
two birds in one stone.

Number 4 is somewhat like number 3 also. You will

have to justify and write why you like or dislike the
text you read and the most essential step in
making the reading journal is of course relating
your personal experiences in the text you read
through identifying its theme.

Why do you think we need to relate the text we

read in our experiences?
I want to hear your stand, Aisha. We need to relate our own
experiences because it helps us
understand and retain the
message of the text even more if
we can relate and have
experience of it or what we call the
personal attachment to the text we
read.

Very well said Aisha. Relating the text, we read in

our experiences also makes our reading more fun
and engaging than those of we see no connection
or relevance to our lives, don’t we? Yes, Ma’am, we do agree on your
notion.
Now we have here some templates for you to
begin in your journal writing. We have I enjoyed
reading this selection because, I did not quite enjoy
reading this section because, I can relate well with
the selection because and the like. So later in your
paper works, you’ll be able to apply those
statements.

Here, we have two types of reading. First is active

reading and the second one is passive reading.
Active reading is more like a discussion between
you and the material, and therefore involves
repeated questioning, critiquing, re-examination
and development of ideas.

The second type of reading, the passive reading is

just simply reading a text or material for the sake
of knowing what it is. Looking at the definition of
passive and active reading, which one do you think
can be associated with critical reading?

Okay JP, which one could be associated with

critical reading? I think it’s the active reading
Ma’am because it equates the
idea of critical reading wherein it is
reading beyond the surface text.

Exactly. Thank you JP. Active reading and critical

reading are somewhat associated with each other
simply because they both aim to deepen the
understanding of a text being read.

How do we determine if our reading style is critical

or not? So, critical reading, the reading process
should be active, target to know the what, how and
why questions, feeds the reader scepticism and
the text being read is purposeful. What else? Can
you give examples that’s not in the hand outs or
based on your experiences?

King, kindly give an example. We are doing critical reading if we

are checking the validity of the
articles being read and also if we
are able to grasp its relevance in
our daily lives.

That’s right. Again, the main essence of having

critical reading is to be able to utilize what we read
in our daily lives. That’s a good example, King.

Now that we know how to distinguish if it’s a critical

reading, what about distinguishing the non-critical
reading?

A non-critical reader is more likely passive, gets

only facts, gullible and reactive. It is the complete
opposite of the critical reading wherein the reader
just reads the text without necessarily getting
what’s the deeper catch within the text itself.

Under the critical reading, we have the

Expressions of agreement and disagreement.
After reading a text, we may agree or disagree to
what is being imposed by the text.

For example, I have here a passage in one of

President Rodrigo Duterte’s speech and you guys
will give your reaction upon reading the passage.
Everybody read the passage. We in government talk too much,
act too little and too slow.

Now Aisha, do you agree on this Statement or do

you disagree? I strongly agree Ma’am. The
words coming from his own mouth
made me more sceptical. Our
government system is literally
taking its toll for the late actions in
societal problems.

Okay good. Class, Aisha used the statement, I

strongly agree in her statement. Some other
similar terms like the one she used are I am of the
same opinion, I agree with you entirely, I totally
agree, and the likes.

As for the disagreement, we have the counterparts

of the agreement markers which are I beg to
disagree, I don’t think so, I strongly disagree and
the likes.

Class, in the agreement and disagreement

expression, we can have varying degree through
degree markers such as completely, slightly and
strongly.

Example, if you want to denote great agreement in

a statement, you can say, I strongly agree on your
idea.

I have here a statement Class, then you need to

think on how to agree, disagree and use neutral
markers.

The read the first statement and give an affirmation

amd negation, Jeriel. No man is an island. For the
agreeing expression, “I strongly
agree that no man is an island.”
For the disagreeing expression, “ I
do not agree that no man is an
island.”

Very good. Give 3 claps for Jeriel, ready go!

For the next statement, let’s have you Feby. Winter is the best season of a
year. For the agreeing expression,
“I strongly agree that Winter is the
best season of a year.” For the
disagreeing expression, “I do not
agree that Winter is the best
season of a year.”

Thank you Feby. Also give Feby 3 claps, ready go!

Now we’re done with Expression of agreement and

disagreement. Do you have any questions so far? None, ma’am. We understood the
lesson well.

Impressive. If you have no questions, let’s proceed

to the next aid to critical reading which is using
Direct Quotation.

On the process of critical reading, we sometimes

look for justifications of our arguments, ideas and
comments reading the text read. A good way to
present clear ideas and support to your arguments
is to take some direct quotation from the selection
and weight out the ideas embedded in it.

Okay, these statement here are example of Direct

quotation. Let me read it one by one.

“But does she even see your worth?” she asked.

Lily asked her cousin, “Are you pertaining to me?”
“Where do you think you’re going?”

Okay class, when we construct direct quotations

like that, we should follow several rules in order to
make a correct quotation statement.

First one, quotation marks are used for direct

quotation.
In our example in your book, “You love Nagrebcan,
don’t you Noel?” The statement that Maria uttered
was enclosed into a quotation marks.
Next The first word of a quoted statement is
capitalized.
Again from your book, the example given is,
“Without waiting for me to answer, he turned to her
and said, “Maria, why do you think Father should
do that, now?”

Even though the statement is just a part of the

whole sentence, since it is enclosed with the
quotation mark, It should start with a capital letter
like that. The letter W is capitalized.

What is the next rule, JP? Kindly give

Your own example using the example in your book
as a reference and write it on the board. Commas are used to introduce or
interrupt direct quotation.

“I guess it’ll rain after all”, Jodi

said, as she sat under the tree.

Is the example of JP correct? Yes, Ma’am.

Okay, that is correct. Give 3 claps for JP.

Now let’s have the fourth one, the question mark is

placed inside that quotation marks if the question
is within the quoted material.

You know what class, this fourth rule is the most

disobeyed rule in using the quotation mark. I would
like to share you my experience in dealing with that
rule because I’m pretty much sure that you also
have committed this sin in using the quotation
mark. If my memory serves me right, way back in
third year high school, when I joined a short
making contest in our school, the judges of the
contest literally wrote a note behind the pages of
my entry that I should study on how to use
quotation mark properly, which is kind of
embarrassing for me. You see, little things like this
make a big difference in the sentence construction.
Are you with me? Yes, Ma’am.
Okay, for the last rule in using the quotation mark,
the question mark replaces the comma if the
quoted question ends in the midsentence. What
does that mean?

In the example given on your book, “Why does he

make that sound?” she asked.

Instead of putting a comma after the quoted

statement, you will only have the question mark to
replace the comma.

Do you understand the 5 rules in using a quotation

mark? Yes, Ma’am.

Are you sure? You need to understand them well

in order to pass in my quiz after the lesson. Yes, Ma’am. We understood the
lesson well.

Let’s have the last part for the critical reading which
is the Characteristics of Critical Reader.

Let’s have a self-assessment whether we are a

critical reader. Okay first, Critical readers are
honest with their selves.

Critical readers should be honest in what extent,

Aisha? Ma’am, I think being an honest
critical reader in a way that the
reader admits if he understood or
did not get the text that he read.

Very good. A critical reader should be honest and

is ready to accept space for improvements.

Next, A critical reader should resist manipulation.

This simply means that a critical reader is not
gullible and is able to discern what is reliable and
what is not.

So those who believes in fake news are not Critical

readers. Just kidding. Not all of them of course.
There will always be that one point in our life that
we believed in something that is not true and is fed
by the social media right? Yes, Ma’am.

Read the next characteristic and give your insights

about it, King. A critical reader can overcome
confusion.
Ma’am, a critical reader can
overcome confusion and find
ways to validate an idea through
looking for other sources that are
You are correct. A critical reader also knows how also reliable and up to date.
to distinguish which is the right argument through
weighing own knowledge and ideas fed by the
other materials he read.

Okay, last but not the least, everybody read. They base judgments on
evidence.

Absolutely. A critical reader always discern things

not only by fact and theories but through actual
evidences of validity of their ideas.

Again the four characteristics of a critical reader

are he should be honest, he could resist
manipulation, he could overcome confusion and
he base judgments on evidence.

Can you recapitulate the four characteristics that I

enumerated, King? The four characteristics of a
critical reader are he should be
honest, he could resist
manipulation, he could overcome
confusion and he base judgments
on evidence.
Okay, we are now done with the critical reading, let
us now have, critical viewing. Class, what do you
think is the difference between reading and
viewing a material?

What do you think is the difference of the two,

Feby? The difference between reading
and viewing is that reading is
decoding letters and texts into
ideas while viewing is the ability to
interpret the meaning of a visual
image.

Okay very good Feby. Reading and viewing,

although sometimes they are inseparable,
especially in watching movies with subtitles, they
have a big difference with each other. Reading is
more on syntax and semantics of letters, words
and text while viewing is interpreting and meaning
making of a visual image.

What is then meant by critical viewing?

Just like critical reading, critical viewing is the

process of comprehending visual images and is
complemented by listening.

Let’s have the statement, “viewing is

complemented with listening”, why do you think
viewing complements listening, Aisha? Viewing complements listening
because often times that when we
view something, we understand
what we viewed when we hear
sound attributed to it.

Okay good. Thank you, Aisha.

Class, when we talk about viewing, it’s not just

simply looking or seeing visual representations or
materials, it is being able to understand it deepest
meaning and being able to sink in its message and
content in our cognitive aspect.

Let’s proceed in the critical viewing principles.

First, Understanding and Interpretation.

The student understands and interprets visual
images.

As I said a while ago, viewing is more than seeing

the actual material. It is about how you analyse and
see the material and what it brings you seeing the
material.
For example, I will state some scenarios and you
will tell me if those scenarios are viewing or not.

Going for a movie to write a movie analysis of it. Ma’am that is viewing.

You went to the rooftop and saw a sketch of a girl

in a paper. It’s not viewing Ma’am.

Why is it not categorized as viewing, Jeriel? It’s not viewing Ma’am because I
just saw the sketch and nothing
more. Viewing is when I make
meaning of the sketch I found.

Correct. Thank you Jeriel.

Now let’s have Analyzing and critiquing.

Read the principle, Feby. The student analyses and

critiques the significance of visual
images, messages, and meaning.

Thank you, Feby, Listen here class, this principle

is the core essence of viewing; it is the ability to
analyse and critique a material presented beyond
the surface level. Critical Viewing, therefore is a
vital skill for learners to draw valid and sound
judgments and conclusions in the materials that
they viewed practicing them to use their higher
order thinking skills.

Class take note of that; Viewing allows you to use

your HOTS or the higher order thinking skills that
will definitely help you to see the world in a more
productive perspective.

Finally, our last topic, Critical Listening.

Everyone ready the quotation. Everyone can hear the sadness in

his heart, but only a few listened.

What does that quotation imply to you and how can

you differ hearing from listening, King? For me it means that many people
can hear the needs of the others
but only are human enough to
listen and help. Meaning, hearing
is just the ability to absorb the
sound feed by the stimulus and
listening is being able to
understand, interpret and react to
what he hears.

That’s a nice reflection, King. Thank you.

Class, imagine a life where we cannot hear

anything. It’s hard right?

Okay, what do we mean by critical listening? Critical listening is the active

process of receiving, analysing,
Kindly read it Aisha. and interpreting information from a
listening material.

Thank you, Aisha. Now class, critical listening, if

we are to study the terms, it’s quite redundant
because listening itself means having a deep
understanding of a listening material and being
able to understand what is inflicts.

It says here that critical listeners uses more than

one listening strategy to effectively extract
meaning from an audio material.

The following are the different listening strategies

starting off with predicting. In the process of
listening there are instances that before the actual
material is played, we get to predict what the audio
material will be all about. For example, JP attended
a youth assembly regarding religious faith and
services. Before JP even go to the assembly, he
already have predictions of things to be discussed
in the said assembly and form ideas in his mind.

Next we have Listening for main idea. In listening

for main idea. The process of listening won’t be
categorized as listening without this aspect.
Listening will always be about understanding what
the speaker inflicts or intends to say.

Then we have listening for specific details. This

strategy is a must-do especially during
conferences. You should of course have adequate
background about the topic to be discussed.

Fourth one is drawing inferences. In drawing

inferences, you are going to dig deeper on the way
the speaker presented or said the things he is
discussing. Inference means observing even the
smallest gestures and the way the speaker
delivered what he said.

And last but not the least, Summarizing. Why is it

important to summarize what we listened to?

Why is it important, JP? Ma’am simply because it will be

the proof of our understanding of
what we have listened to and
gives us clearer picture of that the
speaker said was all about; putting
pieces and chunks together to
make one whole idea of the topic
being discussed.
Well said, JP.

Summarizing class, simply means that you will

shorten and generalize all of the ideas that were
presented by a speaker or an audio material.

Okay class, let’s have a quick review of all our

topic, again what are the three passive macro-
skills that we discussed?

What are those, Aisha? The 3 passive macro-skills that we

had are critical reading, listening
and viewing.

VII. DEEPEN

APPLICATION

So that covers our topics. Do you understand our

lesson class? Yes, Ma’am.
Do you have further questions regarding our topic? None, Ma’am.

That’s good to hear. If there are no other

questions, we will now proceed to our activity

For your task, you will do it as a group, of course

all of you will be in one group and you will be doing
a role play about critical reading, listening and
viewing wherein it should portray the different
characteristic of the three skills. You can have it
like showing the principles of the three given skills
or things that are relevant in critical reading,
listening and viewing. You will be given 5 minutes
to prepare for your presentation and another 10
minutes for the presentation. You will be graded
both as a group and individually.

For the group grading, here are the criteria:

Relevance-35%
Presentation of ideas-25%
Cooperation- 20%
Physicality (emotions, facial expression, tone of
voice)-20%

Are you ready grade 10 progressive? Yes ma’am.

Your 5 minutes starts now.

I would like to congratulate you guys for a

remarkable presentation. You all did a great job.
You all indeed know how to act and conceptualize
commendably. Give yourselves a round of
applause.

GENERALIZATION

Now that you fully understand our lesson, I will ask

you again the same question from the beginning of
our discussion for me to know if you really got
something from our lesson. Upon having all the
concepts about our topic, why do you think critical
reading, listening and viewing are important to
possess for every individual?
Why is it important, Feby? After the discussion, I realized that
it is much important to possess
these skills because we would
have a very hard time to be
productive and accomplish
learning tasks if we do not strive to
be a critical reader, listener and
viewer.

Okay thank you, Feby. What else do you have in

mind, Jeriel? Through possessing those critical
reading, listening and viewing
skills, we will be able to validate
materials not by theory nor facts
alone but through evidences and
providing valid sources.

That’s also correctly and lastly, let’s have you

Aisha. Why is it important? It’s is very important to utilize such
critical skills because it would
allow us to maximize our fullest
potential as learners and it will
greatly help us to distinguish
materials that can be of great use
and benefit for us.

Very good Aisha.

Class, utilizing and possessing these critical skills

will help you guys to develop a more productive
communication skills and be successful in different
perspectives. Since messages and ideas are not
only presented through verbal and written output,
we can make use of these skills to better
understand concepts that are portrayed in a more
discrete manner.

Especially when it comes to public speaking,

wherein of course, you have to have a full access
and knowledge with various ideas and materials to
have sufficient knowledge of the topic that you will
discuss. For you to have those knowledge and
ideas, you will have to be able to distinguish what
is reliable and what is the so-called “resource
material” that will equip you in public speaking and
communication.

Just like your lesson last time, you will not be able
to fully understand the story and its content if you
did not read the story itself and listen attentively in
the discussion right? That makes these skills really
important for you as a student. Do agree with me? Yes Ma’am.

anything in your desk except your pens for your
