ABSTRACT

Philippines is known for its torrid weather as a tropical country among all else,

especially at times during the summer. The researchers, as a way for the heat to have good use

and for energy conservation, conducted an experimental research entitled, Utilization of Solar

Energy for Cooking Through The Use of Solar Oven.

The researchers wanted to prove that Solar Oven could be beneficial, effective, and

productive not only through the use of technology, but also into everyday uses, such as cooking.

It will mostly revolve around the uses of Solar Energy and the benefits it will provide for each

and every one, including the nature. This experimental study is not made to supersede the

modern day appliances, but in a way to cook better and easier using a free, renewable energy

source that does not require amounts of electricity, and will not further contribute to the

pollution of the environment.

Thus, this experimental study can also correlate to minimizing the fuel consumptions,

the expenses for the use of LPG tanks, and the dangers of accidental fires.
INTRODUCTION

This research introduces an experiment to utilize the solar energy for cooking through

producing a solar oven. Before conducting this research, the researchers already know that the sun is

very beneficial to the people. So they thought of something that can be useful which could be very

relevant to our generation that is currently battling with environmental issues. So that led the

researchers to develop a solar oven, which is a device that doesn’t use fuels and electricity to cook

food. The objective of this experimental study is to test the solar oven if it could lessen the

environmental issues in the country. It also focuses on the effectiveness of using a renewable energy in

cooking. And lastly, the researchers want to know the solar oven’s effectiveness, flexibility and

capabilities

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The researchers have come up with this study to determine if the solar energy coming from the

sun could give the mankind more benefits in terms of cooking. They thought of producing Solar Oven

to make that possible. Solar Oven is a device, which uses the sunlight as its energy source to cook a

food, even a one-course meal. It is also a non-electronic device that means that it can lessen the

pollution in our environment and it is very affordable so it is applicable for all ages. Therefore, the

researchers plan to create a study on the utilization of solar energy for cooking through the use of solar

oven to make a cheap yet eco-friendly and harmless product for the consumers while still achieving the

same results that the real oven gives.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The researchers aim to distinguish the effectiveness, flexibility and capability of using Solar

Oven to utilize solar energy for cooking.

This study would like to answer the following questions:

1. Is the Solar Energy can be utilized for cooking in terms of:

1.1. Effectiveness

1.2. Flexibility

1.3. Capability

2. Will the Solar Oven be an effective and useful instrument in terms of:

2.1. Reducing air pollution

2.2. Minimizing of fuel consumptions

2.3. Avoiding accidental fires

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The researchers’ goal in conducting this research mainly focuses on energy conservation.

Renewable energy like solar energy can be useful for many things, and such could be the minimization

of the following; the use of electricity, the expenses, and the amount of population that uses a multitude

of harmful chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbon and formaldehyde, which is continually ruining our

environment at an increasing and alarming rate.

In terms of speaking about the community, using a solar oven is a good start to a healthier

environment. Solar oven could lessen the smoke originating from the constant cooking in different
houses. Appliances that uses electricity and fuels doesn’t have a contribution on helping the

environment because they just add more and more pollution and harmful chemicals that destroys the

nature slowly, so as much as possible, the man-kind must need to use an eco-friendly and a budget-

friendly device to replace these electric appliances.

For the country, a solar oven will be highly appreciated, most especially with the amount of

smoke-belching vehicles in the Philippines and the threat of fires. Solar ovens could help Philippines

improve more in terms of helping the mother earth because it also decreases the risks for irritated lungs

and diseases caused by the smoking cooking fires.

For the school, they can seek beneficiary effects from this by using the study as a guide for the

coming students, and for them to learn how they could contribute to the conservation and to save the

earth. This way, they have a way of rational survival in emergency cases through a method that would

benefit them and the nature.

For the researchers, their study could benefit not only one country, but it can extend

internationally, to offer aid to the world’s predicament of constant climate changes and global

warming.

HYPOTHESIS

This study aims to be able to produce an eco-friendly and a budget-friendly product than other

electronic devices that has produces hazardous chemicals. The solar energy is a renewable energy

utilized for cooking through the use of a non-electronic device that is called a solar oven. The solar

oven will use the solar energy in a genius and resourceful way as it is used as the source of its energy
for it to be able to work. This product will be a good contribution to our environment to find solution in

global warming. But, the researchers might as well thought that this experiment may fail during wet

season. It can also take longer to cook the food because the solar oven is not taking the direct heat and

sunlight of the sun.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This research study is about using a portable solar-powered oven, which utilizes solar energy.

The researchers thought of a better alternative econimic-friendly oven to use instead of the normal

ones, as it reduces the use of burning gas, such methane and butane that are harmful gases that slowly

destroying the ozone layer when burnt. It is also better in terms of cost, manual use, portability, and

size. It is longer lasting and less dangerous, with a backup battery that stores excess energy during the

day, this makes the study interesting to learn, to experiment, and to study. The limitation of this study is

that whenever the Philippines is experiencing wet season, the solar oven will be futile because it has no

solar energy that will power it to work. Moreover, the scope area of this research will be in Manila

City, Philippines.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

To further understand the terms used by the researchers in the study, the following are

explained:

Solar Oven. Also called as a Solar Cooker, a device which harnesses sunlight as a source of heat for

cooking food. Thus making it simple, portable, economical, and efficient tool.
Solar Energy. Solar Energy is the radiant light and heat from the sun that has been harnessed by the

researchers to achieve their research study. This serves as the fuel of the Solar Oven.

Solar Panel. A solar panel is designed to absorb the sun's rays as a source of energy for generating heat

to cook food.

Formaldehyde. A colorless pungent gas in solution made by oxidizing methanol. This gas is

considered as a hazard as it’s destroying our environment and the ozone layer.

Chlorofluorocarbon. These are compounds of carbon, chlorine and flourine that were used as

refrigerants and also destroy our environment. It is also one of the reasons why our atmospheric ozone

layer is depleting.

Utilization. Utilization is the action of making practical and effective use of something.

Renewable Energy. Renewable energy is an energy that is not depleted when used, such as wind or

solar energy.

Smoke Belching. Smoke Belching is usually the bad smoke coming from cars.
