Example 4.1

A thermocouple is used to measure the temperature of a gas stream. The thermocouple

junction is shown schematically in figure 4.3. Take the junction to be spherical and to have
the following properties.

k = 12 BTU/(hrˑftˑ˚R)
c= 0,1 BTU/(lbm˚R)
D=0,0025 in
ρs = 525 lbm/ft3

The initial temperature of the sphere is 65˚F. The fluid temperature is 140˚F, and the velocity
is such that the convection is 80 BTU/(hrˑftˑ˚R) determine the response time of the junction.

Example 4.2

A 5 cm diameter, 60 cmlong aluminium cylinder intially at 50℃ is submerged in an ice water

bath at 2℃. The unit surface conductance betwween the metal and the bath is 550 W/m2K.
a) Determine the temperature of the aluminium after 1 minute.
b) Calculate the cumulative heat rate for the 1 minute

Example 4.3

A concrete wall is 24 cm thick, innitially, its temperature 50℃. One side of the wall is
well insulated, while the other side exposed to combustion gases at 600℃. The heat
transfer coefficient on this side is 30 W/m2K. Determine the time required for the insulted
surface to reach 150℃, and the temperature profile in the wall at that instant. Use the
following propertiees k=1,25 W/m2K, ρs= 550 kg/m3, c = 890 J/kgK
