INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS

Description:
This course is designed to equip students with knowledge, theory and concept, and technique
related to the business in a dynamic global context. Within this course, the basic understanding
of business will be emphasized, including business’ vocabularies, practices and concepts. An
abundance of real-world business developments provides clear illustrations of business concepts,
opportunities and current dilemma to the students.

The discussion materials covers all important business facets such as business and economics
system, forms of business choices, business environment, operations aspects, business
management and organizations, and main business functions (human resource management,
operation management, marketing management, financial management, accounting, and
management information system). As foundation course, it is very beneficial for students to
master this course, considering the more advance course assumed that the introduction to
business course as the basic prerequisite.

Objectives:
After the completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
1. Identify and describe basic concept, theory and technique in business field.
2. Develop practical way of thinking (analytic and integrated) in the implementation of
various basic business concepts in order to understand business practices and
situations.
3. Develop the skills of applying concepts through exercise and case analysis training.
4. Develop sense of business through experiential, contextual, and specific assignments.

Student Responsibilities:
1. Students are expected to come to the class with proper preparation by reading all
material required in every session.
2. Contribute to the creation of academic climate by actively participate in the discussion
lead by facilitator.
3. Listen the lecture, summarize and make notes of important items that student are
interested to be discussed for their own benefits.
4. Do all course assignments.
5. Do the mid-term and final exam in the scheduled week. Student has no right to ask mid-
term and final exam in other occasion.

Absenteeism
Students are expected to attend all the scheduled meetings on time. Late attendance is
considered contravening academic process and climate. Absenteeism policy follows the
regulation stipulated by academic office. Allowance to skip the class of no more than 15% is
designed to accommodate unexpected events beyond the control of students. It is not a right
that students should take or exercise.

Grading
A student’s grade is based on total score of all grading components. The composition of grade
components is as follow:

Mid-term exam 30%


Final exam 30%
Quiz (almost every week) & Class Participation 20%
Project Assignment 20%

Quizzes and Exams. Quizzes, Mid-term and Ginal exam are conducted to assess the learning
process toward the many concepts and theories in the field of business.
Project Asiggnment. The objective of this assignment is to synthesize the thoughts, values,
course materials, and library research applied in managerial and specific problem experienced by
managers. Students are obliged to prepare and submit the report that mirror the result of their
thought and systematic analysis toward the application of the concept and technique in business
field in real managerial situation in the firm. The evaluation of the paper is based on the following
factors: (a) the clarity of business problem; (b) the quality of analysis and the proposed solution;
(c) the technique and format of writing; and (d) the integration and understanding of course
materials.

Academic Honesty
The academic life prospers due to its adherence to honesty and integrity. Falsifying attendance,
plagiarism, cheating and other types of academic misconduct are not tolerated in the FEB-UGM.
The faculty together with students assumes responsibility to assure that learning integrity works
and absorb by the member. The quizzes, assignment and exam the students submitted must be
the work of every student unless otherwise stated by facilitator that student must collaborate
with other student. Failure to obey academic honesty will be punished. The lenient punishment
is “E” grade.

must prepare for that to earn score by doing library research, observation, or other types
of collecting information starting two weeks before the assigned session.
