Linear Programming
1) A manufacturer products two types of steel trunks . he has two machines A and B. The
first type of trunk requires three hours on machine A and three hours on machine B. The
second type requires 3 hours on machine A and 2 hours on machine B. machine A and B
can work at most for 18 hours and 15 hours per day respectively. He earns a profit of
30 Rs and 25 Rs per trunk on the first type and second type respectively. How many
trunks of each type must he make each day to make maximum profit? [AI 2005]
2) A dealer wishes to purchase a number of fans and sewing machines. He has only Rs
5,760 to invest and has space for at the most 20 item. A fan costs him Rs 360 and a
sewing machine Rs 240. He expects to sell a fan at a profit of Rs 22 and a sewing
machine for a profit of Rs 18. Assuming that he can sell all the items that he buys, how
should he invest his money to maximize his profit ? solve it graphically.
[Delhi 2006; AI 2007, 09]
3) If a young man rides his motorcycle at 25 km/Hour, Hoe had to spend Rs 2 per Km. on
petrol. If he rides at a faster speed of 40 Km/Hour, the petrol costs increases at Rs 5 per
Km. He has Rs 100 to spend on petrol and wishes to find what is the maximum distance
he can travel in one hour. Express this as an LPP and solve it graphically. [Delhi 2007]
4) An aeroplane can carry a maximum of 200 passengers. A profit of Rs 400 is made an
each first class ticket and a profit of Rs 300 is made on each on second class ticket.
Airline reserves t least 20 seats for first class. However at least, four times as any
passengers prefer to travel by second class than for first class. Determine how many
tickets of each type must be sold to maximize profit for the airline From an LPP and
solve it graphically.
5) A factory owner purchases two types of machines. A and B for his factory. The
requirements and the limitations for the machines are as follows
Machine Area occupied Labour force Daily output(in unit)
A 1000 m2 12 men 60
B 1200 m2 8 men 40
6) One kind of cake requires 200g of flour and 25g of fat, and another kind of cake requires
100g of flour and 50g fat. Find the maximum number of cakes which can be made from 5
kg of flour and 1 kg of fat assuming that there is no shortage of the other ingredients used
in making the cakes. Formulate the above as a linear programming problem and solve
graphically. [Foreign 2009]
7) A factory makes two types of items A and B, made of plywood. One piece of item A
requires 5 minutes for cutting and 10 minute for assembling. One piece of item B requires
8 minutes for cutting and 8 minutes for assembling. There are 3 hours and 20 minutes
available for cutting and 4 hours for assembling. The profit on one piece of item A is Rs
6. How many pieces of each type should factory make so as to maximize the profit?
Make it as an LPP and also solve it graphically [Foreign 2010]
8) A factory makes tennis rackets and cricket bats. A tennis racket takes 1.5 hours of
machine time and 1 hour of craftsman’s time. In a day, the factory has the profit on a
racket and on a bat is Rs 20 and Rs 10respectively, find the number of tennis rackets and
cricket bats that the factory must manufacture to earn the maximum profit. Make it as an
LPP and solve it graphically. [Delhi 2011]
