(2) Introduction/Significance/Justification

Cassava is the most widely grown of the root crops in the Philippines. The average volume of production during
the past ten years is close to 2.0 million tons of this volume, it is estimated on that 44% is utilized for food, 38% for starch
processing and 18% for feed.

Although cassava is grown extensively in the country, it is mostly grown in small patches for subsistence. There are
however areas in the country where cassava is grown as a cash crop and on a commercial scale. The principal cassava
growing areas located in Mindanao, which accounts for 59% of the area and 71% of production in the Philippines.

In Region 02 there are 41,291.25 tons of cassava crops production for the year 2018, where people are planting
cassava crops in different provinces. The production is shared by the following provinces: in Cagayan there are 5,936.79
tons, Isabela- 32,125.48 tons, Nueva Viscaya- 519.02 tons and Quirino – 2,650.00 tons.

Cassava has its abundant supply year round in Region 02 and this root crop is only prepared as in animal feed and
limited utilization for foods as cassava cake, chips, suman preparation and simply boiled with coconut cream for family
consumption.
Questionnaires will be served to manufacturers and results will be analyzed using statistical tools.

(3) Objectives
General Objectives:
The general objective of this study is to determine the production technology of cassava- based products in the region
specifically cassava chips, and native cassava delicacies.

Specifically it aims to ;
1) Determine producers and local manufacturers’ of the two identified cassava-based products.
2) Determine the tools and equipment utilized by the cassava based products producers.
3) Determine the income of the cassava-based products.

(4) Methodology

A. Research Design
A quantitative approach will be used to gather data on sources of information and information
generated from cassava based product manufacturers. The dynamics of information seeking and sharing
behavior will be described using qualitative approach. Personal interviews with key informants and focus
group discussions will be used to generate quantitative information that will reveal the commonly used
production technology in manufacturing cassava- based products.
B. Population and sampling
Population. From the list of manufacturers of cassava- based products of Region 02.
C. Sampling Methodology
This study used the snowball or chain referral sampling technique to generate respondents of the
study. This way the “who to whom” matrix will be satisfied.
Names of manufacturers of cassava-based products generated from DTI, DOST, NFA, DA, DOLE composed
of respondents. The nominees were interviewed using a questionnaire.
D. Research Instrument
A pre tested structured questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data or information regarding
the variables such as sources of information, extent of information and information seeking and sharing
behaviors of the respondent. The main questions focused on the information system of manufacturers on
the production technology of their products. The ingredients used in their products, the cooking time and
the yield per batch of cooking.
E. Research Analysis
Descriptive statistical tool was used to analyze quantitative data.
