Mission Statement

The intramural program at Bob Jones University exists to glorify God and enhance the mission of Bob Jones
University by providing healthy recreational opportunities for all eligible participants and promoting the following
ideals within a Biblical framework:

 Healthy living
 Social interaction
 Leadership
 Teamwork
 Personal achievement/improvement

The foundation of all intramural activities, competitive or not, is participation, health and wellness, fun, respect, and
relationship building.

The Intramural Handbook does not include all necessary guidelines, policies, and other
pertinent information. Specific policies relating to each sport will be dispersed as necessary.
Philosophy

Page 1
A. The purpose of the intramural program (as stated in the mission statement) is to provide
opportunities for leadership, teamwork, fellowship, and physical exercise while participating in the
various areas of athletic competition. The desire is for eligible persons to take full advantage of the
opportunities provided in the program in order to develop and maintain relationships and themselves
during their time of involvement here at Bob Jones University.

B. Christ must have first place in lives on and off the athletic field. Actions and attitudes must be
controlled and disciplined for there to be a proper Christian testimony. “Be thou an example of the
believer…”

C. Those whose actions damage the testimony of Bob Jones University, themselves, and above all the
Lord, will not be allowed the privilege of participating in the intramural program.

D. Win right, or you don’t win. II Timothy 2:5. In a day when the philosophy of the world is to win at
any price, the faculty and staff of Bob Jones University are dedicated to developing in those who
participate in the intramural program a philosophy that “It is never right to do wrong in order to
win.”

Sportsmanship
A. It is expected that all participants, spectators, and officials will follow the Biblical model of
edification. Positive cheering is highly encouraged and a spirit of fun competition is expected. Some
conflict is bound to occur as competition does exist, but all actions and reactions should first and
foremost be honoring to God. Unsportsmanlike conduct is defined later and will be dealt with by the
Director of Intramurals and/or other governing officials appointed by the University.

B. It is expected that each Bob Jones University student, whether player, cheerleader, or spectator, will
maintain a proper spirit of Christian sportsmanship.

C. As a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, a player or a team may be placed on probation, suspended
from further play in that particular sport, or suspended from participating in the intramural program
altogether for that semester or for the entire school year.

D. It is expected that competitors will compete with the desire and goal of winning their contest. Any
team that deliberately forfeits may face disciplinary action including suspension of the right to
participate.

Page 2

program-related problems.

2. To discuss schedules, practices, and policies pertaining to each sport.

General Rules
A. General Rules

1. No team is to compete officially with teams or leagues outside of the University Intramural
Program.

2. All practices and games should be conducted only at approved locations. The Director of
Intramurals may designate alternative fields and facilities as necessary.

3. Violation of these or additional regulations by individuals or teams may result in forfeiture of

opportunity to participate in the BJU Intramural Program, forfeiture of game(s), a fine, and/or
other deemed appropriate disciplinary measures.

4. Only currently eligible team members may participate.

5. Forfeits are called at scheduled game time unless otherwise noted.

6. Any student receiving an unsportsmanlike penalty such as a yellow/red card in soccer or technical
foul in basketball, must meet with the Director of Intramurals before being allowed to compete
again. Failure to meet with the Director of Intramurals before competing can result in the
forfeiture of any contests participated in by the offending player.

B. Eligibility

1. Participation in the intramural program is limited to current, full-time students in good standing
with the University, as well as faculty and staff. Exceptions on an individual basis may be made
at the discretion of the Director of Intramurals.

2. An individual can play for only one team in any sport league.

3. The following individuals are ineligible to participate in the same or related intramural sport,
during the academic year in which they gained their ineligible player status:
a. Any member of a varsity team who remains on that team's roster beyond the first contest of
that season.
b. Professionals, as recognized by the NCAA or the governing body for that sport, are not
eligible to compete.

4. A person must be on a team roster to be eligible to play; any roster adjustments after the start of
the season must be made in accordance with the guidelines set up for that sport and approved by
the Director of Intramurals or the Athletic Office.

5. Former collegiate varsity athletes may play in their related sport with a maximum of two on a
roster for sports with 5 or more participants and a maximum of one on a roster for sports with
less than 5 participants.

6. Intentional eligibility violations are very serious and violators may lose their privilege of

Page 10
participation in Intramural Sports. Additionally, all contests in which an ineligible player
participated may be forfeited.

7. Students are responsible for checking their own eligibility; however, captains are equally
responsible for the eligibility of all their players.

8. Students who desire to join a team after the first scheduled match/game may become eligible by
having their coach contact the Director of Intramurals and officially add them to the roster. They
should sign the conduct/information sheet before participating. A player must participate in
25% of the regular season in order to participate in playoffs.

9. The due date for team rosters will be provided to coaches. Failure to provide team lists on time
may cause the team to be fined and/or forfeit any game(s).

10. Participation by an ineligible player may result in forfeiture of game(s) by his/her team.

11. Any student desiring to participate in a given sport who is unable to field a team from their
society may compile a team consisting of members from multiple societies. This team will not be
eligible to garner Society of the Year points and must be approved by the Director of Intramurals.

C. Player/Fan Conduct: Technical/Flagrant/Red Card

Team coaches and any player who receives a technical foul, flagrant 2 foul, red card, or official
disqualification for character and/or conduct must have a conference with the Director of Intramurals
before their next competition. The player is considered ineligible until the conference takes place.
Failure to have this conference before participation will result in a forfeit due to an ineligible player
competing. The player may also forfeit his or her privilege to continue as a team member. It is the
responsibility of the player to set up the conference, not the Director.

It is expected that all participants, whether player, coach, fan, or official, will do participate
with a passion – to do the best they can, with a patience – toward others, and with the
purpose of glorifying God in everything they do.

The following disciplinary proceedings are guidelines and may be adjusted as necessary;
1st offense = Suspension from play for a minimum of one game
2nd offense = Suspension from play for 1 semester
3rd offense = Suspension from intramural sports for remainder of school attendance

D. Games

1. When a weekend game goes beyond 10:30 p.m. for any reason, all spectators will be permitted to
remain until the end of the game and the Residence Halls will close fifteen minutes after the end
of the game.
a. Please follow the listed procedures:
 At 10:20 p.m., an intramural representative will call the switchboard to obtain the names
of the Residence Hall supervisors who are on duty for both the women's and men's
Residence Hall.
 Call the Residence Hall supervisors and notify them concerning the extension of the game

Page 11
beyond 10:30 p.m.
 At the conclusion of the game, the intramural representative will call the Residence Hall
supervisors to let them know the game is over. Students must be in the Residence Halls
fifteen minutes after the end of the game.

2. Team members and spectators are not to congregate on or around the playing court after their
game. Consideration must be given to the teams participating in the next game.

Page 12

polo and/or softball), the team will not be permitted to withdraw without penalty.

B. Any team withdrawing from competition will be liable for a $25 fine and be prohibited from
participation the next sport season. Penalties will be determined by the Director of Intramurals.

C. Game forfeits will result in a $25 fine.

D. Forfeits are called at scheduled game time unless otherwise noted.

Inclement Weather Policy

A. All weather related decisions will be made by the Director of Intramurals or a representative of that
office in conjunction with game officials. These decisions will be disseminated via email or other
communication to team leadership.

B. Thunderstorms with Lightning

1. Whenever a thunderstorm with lightning approaches the campus, all outdoor activities must
cease.

2. Everyone must come indoors, either in the Davis Field House or back to the Residence Hall, until
the lightning is over. The Activity Center is not an acceptable building when vacating the fields
due to lightning. You must wait 30 minutes after the last flash of lightning before returning to the
fields.

Protests
Questions as to an official’s judgment are not valid grounds for a protest. All of our officials, scorekeepers, etc.
are human and mistakes can and will be made. If judgment is the cause of the wrong done, the call shall stand
and there is no recourse.

All protests regarding a rule interpretation or misapplication of the official game rules must be verbally declared
to the officials at the time of the disagreement. Play will be suspended and the student supervisor will be
contacted and attempt to resolve the situation with the officials and teams involved. If not satisfied with the
ensuing decision, the coach or captain can notify the Director of Intramurals in writing. The filing must include a
summary and pertinent details relating to the event and the signatures the coaches of both teams at the event.

All decisions will be rendered by the Director of Intramurals who may confer with the Intramural Committee.
