Introduction: Research Interest

The main aim of this thesis is to analyze the media discourse


having aspects of sustainability about CPEC project in Pakistan in the news
articles of both countries Pakistan and China. Dawn and The News from Pakistan
and Global Time and People's Daily from China are gathered. Before going ahead
the term sustainability firstly will be explained and later framing analysis and
discursive analysis will also be explained. I will use Fairclough Critical Discourse
analysis for thematisation and lexicalization, and framing analysis for exploring
the frames, themes and lexical items and related ideologies in media discourse of
40 articles ,10 from each newspaper. What is the ideology behind these
newspapers to sustain the project and what are the particular linguistics choices
used in these newspapers to cover this aspect of sustainability regarding CPEC
project? This question reflects the central research interest of this thesis. that is an
understanding of the lexical and linguistics choices based on framing and
discursive analysis.

Context of the study

A short history of CPEC

What is CPEC?

China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) connects the whole region. CPEC will
not only benefit China and Pakistan but also have positive impact on all the region.
There are different project assigned in CPEC e.g. improved road, air and train
transportation, producing energy , infrastructure, Gawadar special economic zones
etc.

Some research studies


There are different studies done on CPEC projects and its related issues. Rawan B,
Hussain S, & Khurshid A, (2018) have done research on media framing and foreign policy, a
case study of china and pakistan relation in global media. The result was that Indian newspaper
and The New York Times are focused more on the conflict frame and Pakistan and Chinese
newspaper emphasized on the economic responsibility and human interest frames.
Another research was done by Z, Yousaf, M, Ahmed and M, Fiaz on framing of
China Pak economic corridor(CPEC) in the leading press of Pakistan and China. Its findings was
that the coverage of issues is favourable in both newspapers .
Eriksson, E. (2017) has done his research on framing CPEC a comparative study of
Chinese and Indian perceptions of the China -Pakistan Economic corridor. and got his findings
that foreign policies and development projects are not only evaluated through their instrumental
value but equally their social and relational context.

Background of the study


Background of this study will show the progress of sustainable development
on this project. It will highlights how much this project is progressed in Pakistan.

1. Sustainable development on the CPEC project


For the discourse analysis of covering the sustainability of this project in
Pakistan, a discussion of sustainable development in Pakistan is necessary.
Sustainable development was started from end of the 20th century in Pakistan.
Theoretical framework

This research intends to interpret the media discourse with aspects of


sustainability around the CPEC project in Pakistan. Media plays a pivotal role to
change the mind of people. Media discourse is covering sustainable development
related to the project generally on the globe and particularly in Pakistan and China.

Objective of the Study

 To analyze the linguistics choices and systematic structure that are used to
represent sustainable development of China Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Delimitation

The research has been delimited to newspaper articles Dawn, The News
Global Time and People's of the year 2018-2019. These newsppers are sleceted
because of their popularity. Samples has been carried out from them.
