TITLE: STANDARD TEST PROCEDURE FOR PREPARATION AND STANDARDISATION OF

0.1M DISODIUM ETHYLENE DIAMENE TETRA ACETATE (EDTA)

1.0 PURPOSE
Preparation and standardisation of 0.1M Disodium Ethylenediamene tetra acetate.
2.0 REFERENCE
Indian Pharmacopeia-1996
3.0 APPARATUS
1000ml volumetric flask, 250ml Beaker, Funnel, Glass rod250ml conical flask, 50ml Burette
Electronic Balance.
4.0 REAGENTS
Disodium Ethylene DiameneTetraAcetate LR, Distilled Water, Calcium Carbonate AR, Ammonia
Solution, Ammonium Chloride, Erichrome Black T.
5.0 PROCEDURE
Preparation:
Dissolve 37.2 gm of Disodium Ethylene DiameneTetraAcetate R in sufficient water and make up to
1000ml with distilled water.
Standardisation:
Weigh accurately about 0.8gm of granulated zinc dissolve by gentle warming in 12ml of dilute
hydrochloric acid and 0.1ml of bromine water. Boil to remove excess bromine, cool and add sufficient
water to produce 200.0ml. Pipette 20.0ml of the resulting solution into a flask and nearly neutralize with
2M sodium hydroxide. Dilute to about 150ml water, add sufficient ammonia buffer pH 10.0 to dissolve
the precipitate and add 5ml in excess. Add 50mg of mordant black II mixture and titrate with disodium
edentate solution until the solution turns green. Each ml of 0.05M EDTA is equivalent to 0.000654g of
Zn.
