STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Overview:
Civil Engineering is a profession in which the knowledge of the mathematical and
physical sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to
develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the
progressive well-being of humanity in creating, improving and protecting the
environment, in providing facilities for community living, industry and transportation, and
in providing structures for the use of humanity. My name is Akhil Sai Guntipally, and I
want to enhance my knowledge in the same field if Civil Engineering by completing a
Master of Science degree in Construction Engineering Management at the University of
East London.

Academics:
I’ve studied my tenth at City Talent High School which was an affiliate of Board of
Secondary Education, Andhra Pradesh. I completed my tenth in March 2010 and got an
overall percentage of 71.16%. I later studied my Intermediate studies at Sri Gayatri
Junior College and took Math, Physics, and Chemistry as my majors. The college was
an affiliate of the Board of Intermediate Education where I completed my Intermediate in
March 2012 and acquired an overall percentage of 85.7%. I later chose to study
Bachelor of Technology for my bachelors and chose Civil Engineering as my field of
study. I studied Bachelor of Technology at Sunrise University. I have completed my
bachelors at the same college in the year 2016 and passed out in First division. I later
applied for a job in the similar field of Civil Engineering to apply myself practically.

Work Experience:
I’ve completed my bachelor’s study and completed with flying colors. I later searched for
a relevant job in my field of study and was able to get one in Rutadhama Constructions
as a Site Engineer and joined on 16th August 2015. While working here my duties are
to,

 Inspect facilities and analyze operational data

 Maintain compliance with safety and regulatory standards
 Compile estimates for technical and material requirements for project
development
 Determine and present estimates of operational costs
 Evaluate operations and processes
 Suggest process and technical design changes which improve performance and
efficiency
 Implement improvements to designs and processes
 Test material and structural integrity
 Research the environmental impact of projects
 Incorporate eco-friendly and sustainable features into design plans
 Create graphical representations of proposed solutions
 Prepare proposal documents and presentations
 Compile and present reports explaining project details to non-technical
stakeholders
 Monitor project progress, compliance with design specifications and safety
standards

After working here for 2 years, I want to get a relevant master’s degree to proceed
forward in my career and take on better challenges. For the same, I chose to study
M.Sc in the field of Construction Engineering Management.

Why master’s degree?

There are advantages to getting a master’s degree in my field of study and it is
something that is worth considering. There may even be times when this postgraduate
degree will be well worth the time, effort and financial investment. For instance, one
reason to pursue a master’s degree in Construction Engineering Management is to
improve my technical knowledge. An undergraduate civil engineering degree will only
give me fundamental knowledge about the fields encompassed in this engineering
discipline. However, a master’s degree will provide me with the opportunity to focus on
my field of interest. For example, if I want to become a Project engineer, the basic
courses in Project engineering in the undergraduate civil engineering degree won’t be
enough. A master’s degree in Construction engineering with a focus on project
management will beef up my knowledge with about 10 more courses geared specifically
about this field. Another good reason to pursue a master’s degree in Construction
Engineering Management is that it will give me an edge for intermediate-level jobs over
those who only hold a bachelor’s degree, provided that all applicants are equally
qualified in all other aspects. Moreover, experienced hires like me that have a
postgraduate degree in a relevant field of civil engineering are also given more
challenging tasks compared to those that only have a bachelor’s degree because
employers naturally assume that we already have the necessary training in the field.
This is a good thing career-wise since my boss will get to remember me as technically
competent in the field and can be trusted to carry out more complex tasks. Promotion to
a higher position is going to be easier to come by if I’m able to handle difficult activities
in a professional manner. Hence I want to pursue a master’s degree.

Why not India for my masters And why the UK?

I’ve looked into the universities in India and have found that most of the universities
lacked the basic facilities that are required to deliver and give out master’s degree.
Hence I choose to look elsewhere other than India and found that the UK is an excellent
place for my master’s degree. I also considered other countries like the USA and
Australia but none could match the curriculum offered at the UK universities. The UK
has a long-storied tradition in excellent higher education. Since around a quarter of
British universities are among the most reputed and highest ranking in the world,
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland manage to attract nearly half a million
international students each year. By coming to the UK, I’ll not only achieve a world-class
education, I’ll also get to know more about the unique British culture and perfect my
English language and skills. One of the most cosmopolitan places on earth, I’ll meet all
kinds of people and have an enriching study experience. The moment I will step into a
UK university campus, I will feel I have entered a fairy tale. The UK campuses are
mesmerizing and the student facilities are outstanding. All the modern and unique
features of British universities enable me to engage in ground-breaking research and
experience top quality teaching and learning. And these are only some of the reasons
why I should study in the UK. Within many study degrees, I will have the option to take
up a work placement. This will give me the chance to acquire valuable practical
knowledge, as well as the on-the-job training in my area of study. Universities in the
United Kingdom are renowned for high graduate employability, international orientation
(international students and staff ratio), and student satisfaction. Hence I chose to study
in the UK for my master’s degree.

Why the University of East London and the course I chose?

To compete on the world stage, I’ll need a world-standard education. At the University
of East London, I’ll gain an internationally recognized degree that will open doors to an
outstanding future. Their unique curriculum is designed to give me a wider
understanding of the world beyond my degree. Since its founding, the University has
held engagement as central to its values and purpose, ensuring that its culture as a
public-spirited institution finds expression through all of its endeavors. The university
has a history of impressive achievements among its students. Professional bodies also
accredit many of their postgraduate courses and the University ensures their courses
match the needs of potential employers. They are a diverse community of students,
academics and partner organizations in London and around the world. The university
transforms potential into success by giving us opportunities to build our confidence,
skills and connections for the future. The University of East London not only gives me
the resources, opportunities and support academically but they also go above and
beyond to make sure that as an individual I reach my full potential. The Master of
Science in Construction Engineering Management is a professional degree which will
kick-start my career in the construction industry and further develops my expertise to
advance my career. I will gain the theoretical knowledge, as well as the practical skills,
to manage the social, technological, financial and environmental challenges facing the
construction industry today. I’ll be studying core modules like Dissertation and research
skills, Engineering Management, and Project Organization, Procurement and
Contractual practice, Environmental Sustainable Engineering & Logistic, Digital
environment, Principles and Practices, International business, Organizational
management and an optional module in which I choose, Urban Design The Principle of
Cities. The course is offered as a two years master’s course with an industrial
placement year which is designed to address the demands of the profession and give
me a competitive edge when it comes to my career. The placement will start after the
completion of my first year and before the dissertation begins.

Coming back to India:

With the industry placement skills from the degree, I can come back to India with expert
skills in the field of Construction management which will help me get an intermediate-
level job and let me tackle and take on advanced challenges. The field of construction is
an ever-growing field because of the constant growth of the population, there will always
be buildings that are being built using the latest techniques and this degree will only
help me get better jobs

Conclusion:
I wish to continue my career with a master’s degree from the University of East London
and getting an admission here will help my career reach new heights. I thank the
University of East London for taking the time to listen to me.

Thanks and regards,

Akhil Sai Guntipally.
