PHOTOSHOP
INTRODUCTION
Adobe Photoshop is an image editing software developed and published by Adobe Systems Inc. it can enhance
and even manipulate images to get your desired output. You can create a collage, alter a photograph or add special
effects. You can also crop or resize an image, or even save a document in different file types.
There are number of sources for documents that can be manipulated in Photoshop: photographs from digital
cameras, artwork or drawing created in other software, scanned images from magazine, or still pictures from a video.

HISTORY OF ADOBE PHOTOSHOP
On the year 1987, Thomas Knoll was writing a thesis about image processing in Ann Arbor, Michigan and was
dismayed that his computer could not display the grayscale level of his images. Being able to write computer programs,
he wrote a code that would do the job. He called the program Display.
Thomas’ brother, John, was so impressed by the program that he convinced his brother to make the software
commercially available. At that time, John was working with ILM (Industrial Light and Magic), a company specializing in
special effects for movies.
In the following months, they worked together on the program and the result was an image editing software
they called ImagePro. Unfortunately, most companies were not interested in the program or were developing their own,
until BarneyScan allowed the program, renamed it Photoshop, to be bundled with their scanners.
In September 1988, Adobe Systems purchased the license to distribute Photoshop, and after some major
improvements, it was officially released in February 1990 as Photoshop 1.0. the Program continued to adopt the version
number until the version 8 renamed it as Photoshop Creative Suite.

UNDERSTANTING COLOR AND IMAGE MODE

A color mode determines how colors make up an image. Here are the modes of color.

Ø Bitmap – only the colors black and white can be used in images. Line art images use this mode.

Ø Grayscale – uses up to 256 shades of gray. The color black is given a value of 0 and all numbers between
1 and 254 are increasingly lighter shades of gray. White have a value of 255. This mode is used for
images that contain only black, gray and white.

Ø RGB Color – uses three primary colors, red, green, and blue and is the format that is used on computer
monitors. Within this color mode, up to 16.7 million different colors can be displayed. RGB color is
normally used for color images as all file formats and filters within Photoshop support this mode.

Ø CMYK Color – used primarily for printing. Within this mode, colors are given percentage value for each
of the process inks – cyan, magenta, yellow and black. When working with print images, the editing is
often done within RGB Mode and the mode is changed to CMYK as the final step.

PHOTOSHOP FILE FORMATS

Ø Photoshop (.psd / .pdd) – the native file format. It cannot be used with other programs, but it allows the
greatest flexibility when working with images. It supports all color modes and features as alpha
channels, paths and layers. Although the file format compresses the image file, the file is still larger than
compressed files of other formats. This file format is usually used to create and edit the image and a
final copy is save in another format for use in Web Pages, print or Multimedia Presentation.

Ø Bitmap (.bm / .rle) – the most basic graphic file format. When saving a bitmap file, the operating system
must be specified, wither windows or OS/2 and configure the depth of the image up to a value of 32
bits. Channels and layers cannot be saved in this format. They are typically uncompressed files so expect
the files to be quite large.

Ø Compressed GIF (.gif) – Graphic Interchange Format was developed as a way to compress image sizes. It
is used fir internet images, animations and images with transparent sections. The GIF format supports
up to 256 colors (8bit) and is not suitable for complex images such as photographs.

Ø Photoshop EPS (.eps) Encapsulated Post Script format, used for vector or bitmap image, is appropriate
when importing images to an editing program, such as Illustrator, PageMaker, or QuarkXpress. The EPS
Format is normally used in the print process, so images will often need to be changed to CMYK Mode.
