DESIGN CALCULATIONS:

A. Target Strength for Concrete

In order that not more than the specified proportion of test results are likely to fall below
the characteristic strength, the concrete mix has to be proportioned for higher target mean
compressive strength f’ck. The margin over characteristic strength is given by the following
relation: (I S 10262: 2009)
Target Strength, f’ck = fck + Ks
Where
fck Characteristic Comp. strength at 28 days in N/mm²
K Constant depending on the probability of certain no of results likely to fall fck. In our case
the value shall be 1.65 for probability of values 1 in 20.
s Standard deviation in N/mm². In our case for M -25 & M30 grade of concrete with fair
degree of control shall be 4.0 & 5.0 respectively.
Target strength for M-25 : 25 + 4.0 x 1.65 = 31.60 N/mm2
Target strength for M-30 : 30 + 5.0 x 1.65 = 38.25 N/mm2

Typical Design Calculation of M-25

B. Selection of Water-Cement Ratio

From Table – 5 - IS 456:2011/Tender specification, maximum water cement ratio for M-25
is 0.50 Exposure condition is Mild.
Based on experience, adopted Water-Cement Ratio: 0.47
0.47 < 0.50, Hence OK
C. Selection of Water Content
From Table 2-IS 10262-2009, Max. Water content for 20 mm maximum size of aggregate:
186 Lts. (For 25-50 mm slump)
Estimated Water content for 100 mm slump = 197 Lts.
(At rate of -/+ 0.01 for every ± 0.05 change in W/C ratio)
As super plasticizer is used, water content can be reduced up to 12 %.
Hence, Arrive water Content: 197 * 0.88 = 173.4 Lts.
D. Calculation of Cement Content
Water-Cement Ratio: 0.47
Cement Content = 173.4/0.47 = 368.73 ~ 370 kg/m³
From Table-5-IS-456:2011, Min. cement content for M-25 for MILD exposure condition:
300 kg/m³
375 kg/m³ > 300 kg/m³, Hence, OK.
E. Proportion of Volume of Coarse & Fine Aggregate Content
From Table-3-IS:10262-2009, volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20 mm size
aggregate and fine aggregate (Zone I) for water-cement ratio of 0.47: 0.606 ~0.61.
Volume of Fine Aggregate content: 1 – 0.61= 0.39
The aggregate proportion decided
is 41.00 % Aggregate1 (20 Dn) + 20.00 % Aggregate2 (10 Dn) + 39.00 % Sand White.
F. Mix Calculation:
The mix calculations per unit volume of concrete shall be as follows:

F:REP:CMD:01 Page 4 of 7
1. Volume of Concrete : 1 m³

2. Volume of Cement :

: 0.117 m³

3. Volume of Water :

: 0.1734 m³

4. Volume of Chemical Admixture :

: 0.001 m³
5. Volume of all in aggregate : [1-(0.110+0.1734+0.001)] = 0.708 m³

6. Mass of Coarse Aggregate : 0.708 x Volume of CA x Specific Gravity of CA x 1000

(20 mm) : 841 kg
7. Mass of Coarse Aggregate : 0.708 x Volume of CA x Specific Gravity of CA x 1000
(10 mm) : 395 kg
8. Mass of Fine Aggregate : 0.708 x Volume of FA x Specific Gravity of FA x 1000
Sand White : 730 kg
Mix Proportion for Trial: M-25 M-30
Cement : 370 kg/m³ 395 kg/m³
Water : 173.4 kg/m³ 173.4 kg/m³
Fine Aggregate White : 730 kg/m³ 721 kg/m³
Coarse Aggregate (10 mm) : 395 kg/m³ 391 kg/m³

Remarks

The mix design is based on the samples of the materials supplied to the laboratory.
Sources of materials shall not be changed and if changed, concrete shall be redesigned.
Water sample not supplied by customer. It is advisable to check the water sample for
construction purpose before using it at the site.
Allowance for surface water or absorption thereof from the aggregates to be made for
determining the quantity of water to be added to the mix. A due account of evaporation
losses shall also be made. Slump test shall be regularly made as a guide.
The field results are likely to reduce appreciably if the temperature of the concrete at the
time of placement is less than 4° C or more than 35° C.
Properly trained and experienced persons should handle the operation of mixing of
concrete, making slump tests and making cubes. It is preferable that persons handling
these operations are kept unchanged.
