1891 Rerum Novarum Leo XIII
Rerum Novarum discusses about the kinds of conditions and quality all towards the working class. It talks about the relationships and mutual duties between labor and capital, as well as the government and its citizens. It’s main primary concern was that it needed some amelioration between the “misery and wretchedness pressing so unjustly on the majority of the working class.” It supported the rights of labor to form unions, rejected socialism and unrestricted capitalism, while affirming the right to private property.
1931 Quadragesimo Anno Pius XI
Quadragesimo Anno discusses the ethical implications of the social and economic order. It describes the major dangers for human freedom and dignity, arising from unrestrained capitalism, socialism, and totalitarian communism. It also calls for the reconstruction of the social order based on the principles of solidarity and subsidiarity. Essential contributors to the formulation of the encyclical were the german jesuits, roman catholic theologians and social philosophers
1961 Mater et Magistra John XXIII
Mater et Magistra is on the topic of “christianity and social progress”. The title means "mother and teacher,'' referring to the role of the church. It describes a necessity to work towards authentic community in order to promote human dignity. It taught that the state must sometimes intervene in matters of health care, education, and housing.
1963 Pacem in Terris John XXIII
Pacem in Terris was a papal encyclical issued on the rights and obligations of individuals and of the state, as well as the proper relations between states. It emphasized human dignity and equality among all people, and made mention of issues such as the rights of women, nuclear non-proliferation, and the united nations, all of which it endorsed.
1965 Gaudium et Spes Vatican II
Gaudium et Spes is the pastoral constitution of the church in the modern world, it was one of the four constitutions resulting from the second vatican council. Together, the dogmatic constitution of the church, lumen gentium, and the pastoral constitution on the church in the modern world stand as the two pillars of the second vatican council. The dogmatic constitution treats the nature of the church in itself while the pastoral constitution treats its mission in the world. 1967 Populorum Progressio Paul VI Populorum Progressio is about the topic of "the development of peoples" and that the economy of the world should serve mankind and not just the few. It touches on a variety of principles of catholic social teaching: the right to a just wage; the right to security of employment; the right to fair and reasonable working conditions; the right to join a union; and the universal destination of resources and goods.
1971 Octogesima Adveniens Paul VI
Octogesima Adveniens is the incipit of the 14 May 1971 apostolic letter addressed by pope paul to cardinal maurice roy, president of the pontifical council for the laity and of the pontifical council for justice and peace, on the occasion of the eightieth anniversary of Pope Leo encyclical rerum novarum. Generally known as a call to action on the eightieth anniversary of rerum novarum, it discusses themes such as securing democratic foundations in society.
1971 Justice in the World Synod of Bishops
Justice in the World deals with the issue of justice and liberation of the poor and oppressed. It called for more countries to share their power and for wealthy nations to consume less. It makes up a part of official catholic social teaching. It was written by many bishops from poor, undeveloped countries and was influenced by liberation theology. They wrote that justice is central to the catholic church's mission and that "christian love of neighbour and justice cannot be separated.
1975 Evangelii Nuntiandi Paul VI
Evangelii Nuntiandi is an apostolic exhortation on the theme of catholic evangelization. The title, taken from the opening words of the original Latin text, means "in proclaiming the gospel". It affirms the role of every Christian, not only ordained ministers, priests, and deacons, or religious, or professional church staff, in spreading the gospel of jesus christ. Evangelii nuntiandi also gave theological principles to guide members in understanding what is meant by the word evangelization and how it applies to the average Roman Catholic.
1979 Redemptor Hominis John Paul II
Redemptor Hominis is the name of the first encyclical written by pope john paul II. It lays a blueprint for his pontificate in its exploration of contemporary human problems and especially their proposed solutions found in a deeper understanding of the human person. Redemptor hominis also proposes that the solution to these problems may be found through a fuller understanding of the person: both of the human person, and that of christ. 1981 Laborem Exercens John Paul II Laborem Exercens is an encyclical written by pope john paul II in 1981, on human work. It is part of the larger body of catholic social teaching, which traces its origin to pope leo XIII's 1891 encyclical Rerum novarum. Laborem exercens was also written in honor of the 90th anniversary, and makes reference to Rerum novarum and to several of the subsequent writings.
1988 Sollicitudo Rei Socialis John Paul II
Sollicitudo Rei Socialis deals once more with the theme of development along two fundamental lines: 1) the failed development of the third world and 2) the meaning of, conditions and requirements for a development of a worthy person. The encyclical presents differences between progress and development, and insists that true development cannot be limited to the multiplication of goods and services, but must contribute to the fullness of being a human being. In this way the moral nature of real development is meant to be shown clearly.

Centessimus Annus is an encyclical which was written by pope john paul II in 1991 on the hundredth anniversary of Rerum novarum, an encyclical issued by pope leo XIII in 1891. It is part of a larger body of writings, known as catholic social teaching, that trace their origin to Rerum novarum and ultimately the new testament.
1995 Evangelium Vitae John Paul II
Evangelium Vitae also known as "The Gospel of Life", is a papal encyclical promulgated on 25 march 1995 by pope john paul II. It deals with issues pertaining to the sanctity of human life, including murder, abortion, euthanasia, and capital punishment, reaffirming the Church's stances on said issues in a way generally considered consistent with previous Church teachings.
2009 Caritas in veritate Benedict XVI
Caritas in veritate is concerned with the problems of global development and progress towards the common good, arguing that both Love and Truth are essential elements of an effective response. The work is addressed to all strata of global society – there are specific points aimed at political leaders, business leaders, religious leaders, financiers, and aid agencies but the work as a whole is also addressed to all people of good will.
