Abstract

This study was conducted to asses and find out the causes and effects of truancy of Junior

High School students in Abuyog National High School.

This study investigated majorly truancy and the classroom performance of Junior High

School students in the respondents for this study were 50 students from Junior High School

students. They were randomly chosen as respondents through stratified random sampling

techniques.

Truancy is a problem that is seriously affecting the overall success of every student. Based

on the researchers, truancy will be defined as consecutive illegal absences from class or school.

The purpose of this research is to develop a solution that can be proposed to decrease or

eliminate truancy altogether is to be initiated at the beginning of the next school year. Therefore

the first objectives is to identify causes, effects and solutions of truancy in our school. The

researchers final objective is to identify how parents, researchers and school administration feel

about truancy and realized the solutions they are willing to offer in the effort to decrease or

eliminate the problem of truancy is Abuyog National High School.

Introduction

Truancy, or the habitual act of being absent from school without permission, is a major

issue affecting the overall success of school. Truancy is increasingly observed on emerging

problem which is delinquently act of a students to miss one or more classes intentionally. Truancy
is observed meanwhile in Abuyog National High School because there’s a lot of students who are

involved in this case. According to Adevem (2011), truancy is international premediated and

planned absence of the learners, and it may also refer to those students who attend school but do

not take their classes. Truancy is regarded as irregular and non-school attendance behavior

considered delinquent and anti-social behavior (Animasahum, 2009)

The research will provide solutions for the following problem that are related in truancy in

Senior High School students, their reasons why they keep on doing it. This research stated that

truancy is caused by child personality, family background, some students are being truant because

they want attention they couldn’t get from their families, and also financial crisis, because of the

problem in financial some students are involved in a case that they didn’t meant to, they go to

school without taking food because of scarcity and its main reason is poverty.

Truancy is one of the major problems that Abuyog National High School is facing, that’s

why the researchers conduct a study to know the reason why lots of students are involved in

truancy. This study is to be conducted to identify the reasons behind and to identify how many

percent of Junior High School students are involved in this particular problem, the possible effects

in their school performance, if they failed which will caused a big problem for them to pass.

Statement of the Problem

This study intends to identify the truancy among Junior High School students and its ill

effects on their school performance.

This study aims to understand the impacts of being truant at class in students’ ability to

learn. This study attempts to answer the following questions:

1. What are the effects of truancy on their school performance?

 2. What are the factors that affect students to miss their school without permission?

3. How often do students miss their class?

4. What are the solutions to prevent truancy?

5. How many percent of Junior High School students are involved in truancy?

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to give solutions in truancy among Junior High School

students, to monitor them as to their:

 Behavior inside and outside of the classroom.

 Attendance in the class.

 School/classroom performance.

Hypothesis

Truancy lead to negative consequences like poor academic performance, dropping out and

suspension. Truancy is increasingly observed an emergent problem which is a negligent act of a

student to miss their classes intentionally.

The most influential factors contributing to truancy are the school factor, family factor,

community factor, media factor, and peer pressure factor. Truancy are caused by personality,

family, issue and community problems. Furthermore, poor discipline, lack of curricular activities,

mistreatment, harassment, and bullying could be some causes that develop truancy among the

students.
Scope and Delimitation

The purpose of this research is to determine the factors that affect and the reasons why the

students are engage in truancy. This inquiry is conducted in Abuyog National High School and the

target respondents are Junior High School students from grade 7 to grade 10 who are involved in

truancy.

The result of this analysis were drawn from the available data. The delimitation of this

study is the Abuyog National High School where we can conduct the survey and where there are

lots of students who are involve absenteeism.

Significance of the Study

Truancy is commonly observed in Junior High School students. Indeed, truancy is a great

problem for teachers as well as parents. Continuous truancy from school lead to undesirable

consequences. The significant of this study will correspond to the following:

School head. By this study, the school head will be able to formulate some interventions

to prevent the case of truancy and improving the students learning ability.

Students. The research study will be beneficial to students keeping them informed about

the impacts of being truant and its consequences affecting upon one’s academic performance. The

students will also give the idea of what is the existing rules in school regarding the prohibition of

truancy .This study will give awareness to the students about the factors that effect of truancy.
 Researchers. In determining the result of this study give the other researchers a related

study and background knowledge.

Teacher. As stewards of learning, the teachers will be able to figure out the steps in

mitigating the impacts truancy, keeping the students focus on academic works, attaining high

performance level and attaining sufficient learning experience It will grant the teacher about the

reason why students are doing truancy.

Parents. Based on the results of this study, parents will be informed about the impacts of

being truant of their child/children, therefore they will be able to make actions regarding their

child/children’s behavior. It will provide answers for their questions why their children are

involved in this particular activity. It may help them gain additional knowledge on the effects of

having a truant children.

Definition of Terms

This research will provide information and meaning to the following unfamiliar words:

Truancy- is the unlawful absence from school or any school related event.

- Is only filled when you miss so may school days unexcused

- Being absent from school without informing the school for the reason may result in

citation and you and your parents.
