ASRTU SPECIFICATION FOR PRECURED TREAD RUBBER

0.0 SPECIFICATION NO. : AS:272:69:JUL:2005

1.0 SCOPE :

1.1 This standard prescribes requirements & methods of testing for Precured Tread
Rubber.

1.2 This is a purchase specification and does not include manufacturing details. The
parts/material supplied against this specification shall be compatible with the original
equipment.

1.3 The supplier shall provide detailed specifications to the purchasing/inspecting

authority whenever such information is specifically called for.

1.4 The material offered against this specification shall conform to this specification in
full. The tests shall be carried out on the part directly or on the specimen prepared
from the components'. If any of the samples fail in any one or more tests specified,
the sample shall be considered as not having met the requirements of this
specification.

1.5 It is the manufacturer's prime responsibility to satisfy the inspection authority that
the commodity conforms to this standard. This may be accomplished by performing
the tests specified in this standard.

1.6 Sample selection shall be the responsibility of the Quality Assurance Officer.
Required quality for complete testing as per this specification shall be supplied.

1.7 This specification has been formulated as per the decision of 189th meeting of
Standing Committee (S&C) held in October, 1998. In preparation of this standard,
considerable assistance has been derived from MSRTC Specification No.
MS/300/151/1/Oct. 1996.

1.8 This specification supersedes our earlier specifications including

3.0 TERMINOLOGY :

3.1 Precured Tread Rubber :

Tread Rubber (Precured) is an extruded duly cured rubber compound of specific
profile, tread pattern and dimensions to suit the retreading of tyre casings on which
the tread portion is worn out. This is generally made in long lengths and can be
compounded from blends of Natural Rubber, SBR or BR re-enforced with suitable
fillers to give the specified properties. The under surface of the precured tread
rubber shall be free from visible defects. The undersurface of the tread is buffed to
RMA 3 standard.

DIMENSIONAL DETAILS
a) Length : 3125 ± 5 mm or multiple thereof

b) Width i) 180 or 185 ± 2mm for 9x20 & 10x20 PTR size

ii) 195 + 0/-2 mm

AS:272:69:JUL:2005

iii) 205 ±2mm(Radial Tyre)& 215 ± 2mm(Bias ply Tyre)

for 11x20 PTR size

c) Pattern 5 Rib with Groove width 10 + 0/-1mm

d) i) Standard Non Skid 13.5 + 0.5/-0.0 mm for 9x20 & 10x20 PTR size
Depth (NSD) 15.0 + 0.5/--0.0mm for 11x20 PTR size

ii) Low Non Skid Depth 10.0 ± 1.0 mm

e) Base Rubber Thickness 2.5 ± 0.2 mm for 9x20 & 10x20 PTR size
3.5± 0.2 mm (for 11x20 PTR size)

(Thickness between buffling and tread design)

f) Tread wear indicators & tie bars shall be provided on sides and within the grooves
respectively.

g) Expected life : Equal to new tyres obtained in the area (Excluding performance of
tyres scrapped). However the manufacturer shall indicate the
performance guarantee either in kms. or percentage life to that of
new tyres.

Note : In case STU's intend to use precured tread rubber of different dimensions
or tread pattern, the above stated details shall be amended accordingly in
their tender. The supplier shall obtain the approval of the user of his
material before the supplies are made.

4.0 REQUIREMENTS :

4.1 The material shall be a homogeneous compound free from foreign matter moulding
defects and porosity. No portion of the precured tread rubber shall have distortion or
blooming. The under surface of the tread shall be buffed to RMA 3 Standard,
uniformly.

4.2 Sampling of the material :

About 1 metre length min. of Precured Tread Rubber shall be sampled and sent for
testing

4.3 Physical Properties :

The physical properties of precured tread rubber shall conform to the specification
laid down in Table 1.

AS:272:69:JUL:2005

5.0 STORAGE :

5.1 Material shall not be stored near boilers, heaters and other source of heat.
0
5.2 Maximum ambient temperature of area of storage shall preferably be 35 C.

5.3 Area of storage shall preferably be cool and dry.

6.0 PACKING & TRANSPORT :

6.1A) Precured Tread Rubber :

Depending upon the size, Precured tread rubber shall be packed in standard weight
rolls or as agreed between the manufacturer and the purchaser. The rolls shall be
inserted in low density polyethylene bags of appropriate size and then finally packed
in a cardboard carton. The cardboard carton shall be bound with carry straps or self
clining film or HDPE bags & stiched across.

Material shall be so packed that it is fully protected from any physical damage
during handling and transit.

6.1B) Material supplied shall have the name or trade mark of the manufacturer
printed/moulded after every meter in length.

The packed containers/cartons shall be labelled with the following.

a) Trade Mark b) Gauge

c) Net weight d) Date of Manufacturing & batch No.
e) Expiry date f) Name of the manufacturer.

Each consignment shall accompany test certificate as per given format. The slip
shall also contain the recommended external and internal curing media details.
