EARTH & SPACE

SCIENCE
What is Earth & Space Science?
The Earth and space sciences sub-strand explores Earth's dynamic structure and its
place in the cosmos. The key concepts developed within this sub-strand are:
Earth is part of a solar system that is part of a larger universe.
Earth is subject to change within and on its surface
Students view Earth as part of a solar system, which is part of a galaxy, which is
one of many in the universe
Students investigate the processes that result in change to Earth's surface

Incorporating the 5 E's Model:

Throughout our lesson we have incorporated the EXPLORE element of the '5 E's
Model'. We have provided students with activities that allow them to delve into the
concept of 'Earth and Space' through hands on experiences.
Our lesson also encourages students to independently
research subject specific content through the
implementation of open-ended tasks.

Linking our concepts to STEM :

STEM is a specific approach that integrates various
elements of the curriculum with science, for example;
technology and mathematics. In our lesson on volcanoes,
students must re-create a volcanic eruption using various
materials. They must then analyse the outcome and
compare their results to a real-life volcanic eruption.
Activity 1
Tsunami Effects
Students will watch the representation of the tsunami and record their
findings. Then in small groups brainstorm and discuss questions raised by
the teacher, reporting their findings to the class.

Key Questions:
Do you think anything could be done to prevent damage to the community?
What caused the wave in this experiment?
How are tsunami waves created in nature?A
