Course Title: English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Higher Levels – 15 weeks x 2 hours.

Aims: To provide speakers of other languages to English with the opportunity to work towards improving their English in speaking, listening, reading
and writing. Learners will also work to improve grammar, vocabulary and practise formal and informal English.

Outcomes:
To improve English skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. To gain confidence in the use of English. To learn more about life in the UK and
citizenship.

Teaching methods:
The course will be based around the Adult ESOL core curriculum, which is published by the Department for Education and Skills and the Basic Skills
Agency. Opportunities will be given to use English in an interactive situation with other learners. Homework will be given on a weekly basis which
should take learners about 30 minutes to complete. Short talks, discussions, handouts of learning materials, realia, C.D./taped material will be used.

Tutor Resources required:


Classroom with white board and OHP. CD player. Digital recorder. Photocopies of handouts. Skills for Life materials. Access to computers and
Internet. Other relevant materials to support ESOL curriculum e.g. articles from newspapers, BBC Learning English, realia.

Students will need to provide:


Pen and paper. An A4 folder is useful to file work. An English dictionary and an English/own language dictionary can be helpful.

Assessing progress:
Students will assess their levels of existing knowledge and ability with the tutor at the first session and note this on their individual learning record
(ILP).

There will be weekly reviews and evaluations of learning covered at the end of each session. Students will be given feedback on progress on a
regular basis. Individual progress reviews will be carried out termly. Learners will assess their achievements individually and complete their learner
records at the final session.

Learners will have the opportunity to work towards National Literacy Tests and the City and Guilds ESOL Tests in English at Level 1 and 2.
