Global Social Entrepreneurship

Description
This course will teach you how to apply the principles of entrepreneurship to create solutions for
the world’s most pressing problems. You will learn how to design a solution, create a mission-
driven organization, and select the best structure for your venture: nonprofit, for-profit, or hybrid.
You will also get advice from successful social entrepreneurs, such as Nobel Laureate,
Muhammad Yunus, Embrace Co-Founder, Jane Chen, and Kreyol Essence founder and CEO,
Yve-Car Momperousse.

Curriculum

Module 1: Designing Your Venture


Recommended Schedule: Complete by Week 1
Description: In this first module, you will learn how to identify a problem, study it, and
design possible solutions.

Module 2: Mission, Values, and Vision


Recommended Schedule: Complete by Week 2
Description: In this module, you will develop a mission statement, a vision statement,
and a set of core values. These clear principles will help inform the decisions you make
and create a strong culture within your organizxation. They will also anchor your
venture with a strong sense of purpose.

Module 3: Achieving Your Venture’s Goals
Recommended Schedule: Complete by Week 3
Description: In this module, you will set measurable goals and make a plan to achieve
them.

Module 4: Structuring the Venture


Recommended Schedule: Complete by Week 4
Description: In this module, you will learn about different designations for structuring a
venture. The structure that you choose will impact the type of funding or investment you
are eligible to receive as well as the taxes you will have to pay.

Module 5: Growing Your Venture & Measuring Its Impact


Recommended Schedule: Complete by Week 5
Description: In the final module of this course, you will learn about Key Performance
Indicators (KPIs). As a social entrepreneur, you will want to select indicators that reflect
both the social impact you wish to have as well as the financial goals that you will need
to hit to achieve sustainability.

Course Instructor
Jessica Jackley
Jessica is an entrepreneur focused on financial inclusion, the sharing economy, and social
justice. She is the author of Clay Water Brick: Finding Inspiration from Entrepreneurs Who
Do the Most with the Least (Random House); a co-founder of Kiva, the world's first person to
person microlending website; a co-founder of ProFounder, an investment crowdfunding
platform; and an investor and advisor with the Collaborative Fund.
Jessica currently teaches Social Entrepreneurship at the Marshall School of Business at
USC. She is an independent consultant on social impact initiatives, a member of the Council
on Foreign Relations, a 2011 World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leader, and serves as
an active board member or advisor for several nonprofit organizations including Habitat for
Humanity.
She holds an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, a certificate in Global
Leadership and Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School, and a BA in Philosophy
and Political Science from Bucknell University.
