Projects // Building Construction
Description
The Canary Islands designated as secondary venue of the 2014
Basketball World Cup began the island’s most important public
works. With a seating capacity between 10,000 and 11,000,
its multi-purpose nature will allow hosting both sporting
(basketball, volleyball, tennis, etc.) and cultural events.
Its rectangular dimensions are 123.5 x 93 m, with a height of
24 m and a depth between -5.4 and -12.36 m.
The building façades are 20 cm thick concrete walls, supported
on buttresses of 0.5 x 3.8 m every 6 m.
The width of the buttresses decreases before reaching the top.
Thus, the steel trusses that sustain the roof will rest on these
buttresses.
ULMA Solution
Main conditions for the construction of the walls:
· Observing the pattern defined for the joints in front view,
both vertical and horizontal. This was done with ENKOFORM
V-100 formwork.
· Align the tie holes horizontally and vertically.
· Avoid bigger holes due to climbing cones. The Cone AWF is
placed at the position of a tie rod. At removal it leaves a mark
identical to the one of a tie rod.
Wall climbing:
· Outside: 21 m2 big formwork units on climbing bracket.
· Inside: internal climbing platform supporting on folding
brackets fixed on the buttresses.

Projects // Building Construction
Description
With 25,000 m2 and a capacity of 200,000 m3, this project is
the architectural expression of a historic change. The symbolism
of the building is evident in its design, which includes inclined
walls every 12 m, all in the same direction.
Very soon, The Solidarity Center will become the centre for
European cultural and social organisations of the historic
“Solidarity” movement in Poland and Europe.
The building, designed as a monolithic structure, required
bold solutions for both design and materials: heights ranging
between 19.5 and 30 m, inclined walls and finding a building
capable of integrating into a shipyards environment.
ULMA Solution
Faced with an inclination of 6.5° and outer walls of great
height, ULMA designed a unique solution with vertical modular
formwork for tiers of 8 m and working platforms that ensured
workplace safety.
The uniqueness of this project and the high concrete pressure
required the reinforcement of the formwork with high load
capacity ALUPROPs. The side panel holes ease quick and 100%
leak-tight corner solutions, suiting the peculiar shape. This
process allowed of shorter construction time without sacrificing
the high safety standards.
With only two systems, the large beams and slabs of the John
Paul II Hall were built. The shoring of the two high floors of the
hall was done with T-60 towers and ENKOFLEX slab formwork.

Lookout Tower of the Trade Fair and Congress Center, Kielce, Poland
MK SYSTEM: A SINGLE SOLUTION FOR COMPLEX STRUCTURES
Description
This building for big events has four floors and an underground
car park. Its most striking architectural feature is the 44 m high
lookout tower with banquet hall.
ULMA Solution
The ATR self-climbing system was used for the construction of
the two 90 cm thick outside walls. The other two walls with a
thickness of 15 and 25 cm and protruding structural steel parts
did not suit the use of the ATR system.
The self-climbing systems were used with MK trusses to make
large working platforms. In the reverse direction, the platforms
for the walls with protruding steel structures were made with
MK trusses. The entire system rested on four self-climbing
brackets, which made up a large working platform and held
the wall formwork.
MK structure and ATR system were simultaneously moved with
the hydraulic system to the different pouring stages requiring
only 15 to 20 minutes for climbing from one level to the next.
The interior of the structure was built with the KSP Shaft
Platform hoisted by crane and making up the formwork
support platform. BRIO Modular Scaffolding ensured the
vertical communication between different levels.

Description
Located in the centre of Dortmund, the ECE is one of the largest
and most advanced shopping centres of Germany.
Its 33,000 m2 floor area are distributed over 4 levels. It has
5,000 m2 office area, three parking levels (700 spaces) and 150
shops and restaurants. 50,000 m3 of concrete and 7,400 t of
steel reinforcement were required for its construction.
ULMA Solution
Both in design and construction, the project demanded a
thorough work which resulted in a great success. Given the
limited space available, the material supply was a key factor in
the whole process, with quantities and times adapted to the
pace of work.
The ORMA vertical formwork was capable of precisely adjusting
to the construction of walls and staircases. Its wide range of
panels enables the easy assembly and jointing of large sets, in
addition to solutions of corner not 90° with few accessories.
Several walls required fair-faced finishing. The curved walls
are an example for this and were built with circular formwork
systems adjusting precisely and without effort to any radio.
Column heads were built with F-4 MAX Hinged Column
Formwork and movable VR Tables. The VM-20 beams covered
with 21 mm plywood ensure a high efficiency for large areas
and repetitive solutions.
The slabs were built with ENKOFLEX shored at great heights on
EP Props and T-60.

Description
Designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava, the “Città dello
Sport” includes soccer fields, running tracks, shops, offices,
apartments, libraries, the new “Palazzo dello Sport”, the
swimming stadium and the Rector’s Office of the University of
Tor Vergata.
This project was a great challenge because of its unique
architectural features and the complex design of the new Roman
swimming stadium.
ULMA Solution
The requirements for the fair-faced concrete finishing were very
strict. Coherence and continuity of the wall design required the
tie holes to be in a regular vertical pattern and the plywood
panel of a size of 3 x 1.25 m. The versatility of the MK System
and the formwork optimisation according to the type of
concrete achieved to fulfil these high demands.
The 13 m high surrounding wall was built in a creative way
with different types of openings, both as well as overlapping.
A spectacular building in whose interior there are almost 190
between 30 and 70 m long arches. The backbone of it is a
130 m longitudinal arch which supports the steel and glass roof.
Along with formwork of the MK System, 12,000 m2 slab and
4,000 m2 vertical formwork were supplied.

Located in Toronto’s Discovery district, the Phase II of the MaRs
Centre will add 74,000 m2 to the existing complex. It is a
20-storey tower at the west wing housing laboratories (60%)
and offices (40%). Moreover, it will include a
two-level underground parking. After this project, MaRs will
have doubled its surface and incorporate the largest centre of
science, technology and research in Canada.
ULMA Solution
Shafts were built with ORMA vertical formwork and Easy-Stripping
Corner Panel, suitable to speed up and increase the efficiency of
shaft formwork erection and dismantling. The lightness of the
MEGALITE formwork eased the wall construction.
The lightweight, safe, high-performance CC-4 aluminium
formwork was used for slabs (30 cm) and beams (25 cm). Large
formwork tables were also used.
The ALUPROP, light and suitable for heavy loads, was used for the
propping and back-propping of 2.75 m standard height of floors.

Description
Its 55,000 m2 of area for rent converts Tower Bridge into one
of the largest shopping centres in the metropolitan area.
The building periphery is divided into three sections of about
2,000 m2, with 5 basement levels. The projected area of the
building is 2,400 m2, to a total built floor area of 138,000 m2.
ULMA Solution
The project included aspects such as passageways for the
movement of people or perimeter working platforms. High
efficiency construction systems were chosen with pouring cycles
of 7 days for an area of 2,400 m2. This required the SP Prop as
back-propping system of high load capacity.
G Shoring suited the formwork support at great heights and
enabled the early removal of the slab formwork for the use of
the same material in successive stages. The foundation was
built with COMAIN Handset Formwork.
ULMA maintained its ongoing support by the technical training
of workers and by monitoring the entire construction process.

Projects // Building Construction
Description
Best known as Mane Garrincha, it will be one of the main
venues of the 2014 Football World Cup. After the demolition
of the old stadium, this new sports complex will accommodate
more than 71,000 spectators in an area of 188,000 m2.
This project faces several challenges: nearly 5,000 tons of
auxiliary products, in a construction process with less labour and
shorter lead times, always maintaining a high level of safety.
ULMA Solution
The peculiarity of this stadium resides in the 288 columns of
46 m height across the entire complex, on which the
compression ring rests. For the construction of the circular
columns of 1.20 to 1.50 m diameter, CLR formwork has
been used in successive tiers of 4 m. The BRIO system used as
working platforms, ensured workers’ safety at great height.
The construction of the compression ring (22 m width and
46 m height) meant a great technical challenge. This is where
ULMA as a cutting-edge company for formwork technology
comes in value. MK Structures, resting on climbing brackets
anchored to the 288 columns, supported the compression
ring, which avoided the use of a large volume of conventional
shoring and resulted in considerable time and cost savings. For
the construction of the grandstand beams (12 m height), MK
Structures on BRIO Shoring were used.
The foundations were large repetitive blocks. The versatility of
the COMAIN formwork suited this job.
As shoring system for slabs and beams, ALUPROPs have provided
lightness and adaptability to the different slab heights. The Trolley
VR has facilitated the transfer of BRIO and ALUPROP towers to
each new pouring stage thus avoiding their dismantling. Thereby
the efficiency of the project could be increased, and the material
input reduced.
The production manager of the builder consortium, Marcos
Aparecido Conchis, states that the expectations set on ULMA
have been exceeded, with a high quality service, continuous
advice and strict compliance with supply commitments.

Powered by the National Confederation of Commerce of
Brazil, this business complex of 154,465 m2 includes four office
towers of more than 17 floors. Each building will include a
wide hall with double-height ceilings, auditorium, conference
rooms, leisure areas, etc.
Its unique design is combined with sustainability. This is why;
it is one of the first buildings of Brazil to be certified LEED,
Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, issued by the US
Green Building Council.
ULMA Solution
The new Head VR SP/EP, a new application of the VR Table
system, meant a great success. This lighter head can be used
with a very light prop, the SP. The system was used from the
third floor on, on flat slabs without interference from drop or
perimeter beams. This solution has reduced the cost of labour,
since the tables are moved horizontally with the Trolley VR
and vertically by crane, without the need for dismantling the
assembly.
For best results, different formwork systems have been combined:
COMAIN modular formwork for walls and piers, while RAPID
was used for solid slabs and large spans. BRIO Ladder eased the
access to the different floors.
For reasons of geometry, ULMA has gone for the safety and
efficiency of the table system instead of conventional systems.

An example of this is the unique perspective of the city all its
apartments are offering which enables the vision at 360°.
It occupies an area of 2,797.63 m2 and has 62 apartments
spread over 22 floors.
ULMA Solution
The slabs of the four basements (more than 6,000 m2) were
quickly and safely built with the recoverable system for reticular
slabs RECUB with 20 cm waffle and 5 cm compression layer.
For conventional slabs, BTM formwork was used with weekly

Description
Also present in this part of the world, ULMA undertook the
construction of the 49.74 m high control tower at the Dakar
International Airport.
With a nominal outside diameter of 7.8 m and 7 m inside
diameter, the tower involves six different sections, due to the
disappearance of walls and beams in some cases, and to the
variation of the outside diameter.
ULMA Solution
The outside formwork consisted of four ENKOFORM V-100
panels supported on CR-250 climbing brackets.
The inside formwork had 26 panels, some on climbing brackets
and others on KSP platforms, due to the lack of space for the
climbing brackets.
The formwork design made it possible to withstand concrete
pressures of up to 60 kN/m2. The largest outside formwork unit
(formwork and base structure) weighed 5,600 kg, while the
largest inside unit reached 3,600 kg. This solution allowed for
the lifting of each set independently and by crane.

Description
This project is designed according
to the latest standards in hospital
construction: open and bright
spaces, safety, solidity, seismic
design and stability.
With a height of 18 m and
49,000 m2 floor space, it is a compact
block which makes movements of
staff faster to optimise resources
and minimise operating expense.
The hospital consists of two parallel
rectangular buildings in H-shape of
120 x 140 m length. Each of the four
floors extends to 70,000 m2 with a
slab height between 3.84 and 4.84 m.
Volume:
195,500 m3
Floors:
1+4
Construction time:
2 months for the parking + 3 months
for the floors.
ULMA Solution
The CC-4 aluminium formwork
with EP Props offered the perfect
solution for extensive floors
without obstacles and with a
minimum number of evenly
distributed columns. In total and
to meet the agreed deadlines,
8,000 m2 of CC-4 aluminium
formwork and 2,300 EP Props were
used. Due to the system’s reduced
requirement of props per m2, large
working areas could be created and
assembly time saved.
The CC-4’s great efficiency lies
in the lightness of its aluminium
profiles and the sophistication of
the system. Assembly is carried out
from inside by sliding the panels
into place on the beam grid. Thus,
a single worker, from a single
location was able to erect up to
10 m2 of formwork.
In accordance with safety
standards, the BRIO system
provides perimeter protection and
prevents any falls from height.
The experience of ULMA’s Italian
subsidiary in large-scale projects
has ensured the timely delivery of
material, contributing its know-
how throughout the entire building
process.

The Coast at Lakeshore East is a residential building of 45
floors and 129.5 m height linked to the nautical nature of the
surroundings.
It has 499 apartments and 1700 m2 of commercial area (parking,
business centre, swimming pool, fitness centre and spa, etc.).
The avant-garde design of the east and west façades include
curtain walls in a combination of translucent porous glass and
aluminium. Its balconies at the north and south façades provide
magnificent views of Chicago and Lake Michigan.
ULMA Solution
The HWS Hydraulic Windshield System secures works at the
slab edge against falls from height as well as against possible
adverse weather conditions. It is lifted with a mobile hydraulic
system.
Different screen configurations (with or without platforms)
provide storage space, access and ease the material transfer to
different levels by scaffolding ladders.
The walls and columns were formed with MEGAFORM and
MEGALITE. These modular formwork systems include a wide
range of panel sizes in imperial measurements adjustable to
diverse geometries.
The slabs were built with large formwork tables supported on
columns.

Description
The Four Seasons is located in Toronto, the heart of Yorkville,
an area of intense cultural activity. With 57 floors and
204 m height, this building records to be the most expensive
and popular of the city.
ULMA Solution
Its location in the city centre required for additional measures
and made it a pioneering project in the use of the Hydraulic
Windshield System HWS. The protective screens placed around
the entire perimeter of the building fulfil the double function of
securing works at the slab currently under construction and the
next two, and provides platforms for access or storage.
Inclined panels with built-in storage platforms were used
to ease the transfer of material to the next floor after use.
Moreover, a mobile hydraulic power unit avoids the use of
cranes for the climbing of screens and other materials, thus
saving time and costs.
The windshield system is designed to work with the highly
flexible MK System which allows using standard walers and
simple joints to accurately adapt to the building geometry and
to generally meet all requirements of the project. The HWS
ensures workers’ safety and prevents damage to the building
during the construction process.

Description
It has taken almost a year to build the Biomass block of the
Polaniec plant, leading example of Poland’s energy industry.
The vertical communication of the building was solved with the
construction of two 70 m high lift shafts.
Apart from a biomass tank, simple and trapezoidal walls, as
well as roofs for the warehouses were built.
ULMA Solution
ULMA used for the first time the ATR self-climbing system in
Poland, which solved the problems of limited site space and
complex crane operations for the formwork movement. Each lift
shaft has three sides, needing 6 hydraulic cylinders. The
formwork was moved 19 times by lift shaft. The ATR System
works without crane and under adverse weather conditions.
Moreover, its large platforms and handrails ensure workers’
safety.
The inside of the lift shaft was done with KSP Platforms.

This is a gravel mill for a quarry near Würzburg. It includes 10
silos with an area of 5 x 6 m each and 15 m height. The total silo
volume is 350 m3.
ULMA Solution
The first tier is 6.5 m high with side walls and front openings.
Afterwards, two similar climbing stages of 4.25 m were performed.
The inside shafts were built with 5.9 m wide KSP Shaft
Platforms with MK-180 walers and folding brackets. The
CR-250 climbing bracket worked as platform and climbing
support for ORMA vertical formwork equipped with roll-back
carriages for stripping. Platforms and formwork moved to the
next silo without changing its configuration and according to
the planned construction process.

Description
This project is a clear example of environmental sustainability.
With 5,957 m length and 56 m height, Jirau will become the
world’s 14th largest power station regarding its capacity for
sustainable energy production in the world: 3,750 MW.
Despite its complexity, all project needs were covered with
ULMA’s MK System.
With standard parts only, it offers the best solution for high
load requirements. Moreover, this system provides a 50%
productivity increase compared to conventional systems.
Equipment: 1,000 t
Power production: 3,750 MW
Concrete volume: 2,478,361 m3
Turbines: 50
At peak production: 18,000 employees
ULMA Solution
As ULMA, we guarantee maximum performance with our
innovative products and structures made up of standard modular
material.
To cope with the dimensions of the water intakes (18 m
high and 2.5 m thick), a solution with two mobile MK-360
Shoring towers and ENKOFORM HMK and VMK formwork was
designed. Erection and dismantling tasks were considerably
quicker with a form carrier with rolling system moved forward
from stage to stage.
Despite the complex shape of the Transition Tunnel (27 m long
with a height between 11 and 14.5 m), the stretches were built
with the MK System in a sequential manner.
Workers’ safety is our highest priority. Hence, MK Structure was
equipped with perimeter protection and formwork support.

Description
Bayovar is located in the Sechura desert in the region of Piura,
Peru. It is one of the largest deposits of phosphate mining of
South America, with an estimated annual production of 3.9
million tonnes of concentrates for export.
ULMA faced a challenge: the construction of two large silos.
Each of 33 m in diameter and 55 m height, they consist of
0.4 m thick reinforced and six 0.7 m thick solid concrete walls,
located every 60 degrees at the perimeter of each silo.
ULMA solution
Both silos were built at the same time. ULMA supplied 100%
of the material (480 tonnes) and excelled in efficiency with
regard to delivery terms.
The large dimensions of the silos required the use of systems
adaptable to the circular geometry, while at the same time,
ensuring the best quality concrete finishing. For each silo, 72
panels of beam-based ENKOFORM VMK formwork was used
on single-sided climbing brackets. Panel dimensions were 3 m
height by 2.65 m width. Concrete pouring was done in 17 tiers.
Other ULMA systems used in this project were COMAIN
Handset Formwork and BRIO Modular Scaffolding.

Description
It is a pioneer power station in Peru, as it is the first one which
works with natural gas. This project regarded the change of
the previous power station to a combined-cycle station and to
increase the power capacity of 536 to 850 MW.
The following different jobs were undertaken: 3 Heat Recovery
Steam Generators (HRSG), a new steam turbine of 300 MW, 2
water tanks and a desalination plant with a 5 km long conduct.
ULMA Solution
The turbine building constituted the most complex structure
of the project, where columns and beams were formed with
NEVI vertical formwork. Moreover, BRIO Shoring was used to
support the cambered beams at 12 m height. The formwork
used was ENKOFORM H-120.
NEVI formwork was selected for the foundations due to its
good finishing and the reduced number of parts.
COMAIN vertical formwork in its circular version was used for
the foundations of the water tanks.
The versatility and safety of the BRIO scaffolding suited the
electromechanical assembly of the structures.

SLABS AT GREAT HEIGHT
Description
This is an industrial building of 5
floors with another office building
and underground parking attached.
It occupies an area of 36,940 m2,
with 2,220 m2 in the mezzanine
and 8,680 m2 distributed over 4
floors. It has different heights:
4.2 m on mezzanine, from 10.1 to
11.3 m on 1st and 2nd floor, and
8.4 m between 2nd and 5th.
The slab thickness varies between
300 mm and 380 mm.
ULMA Solution
750 mm slabs and column heads
were built with VR Tables. The
great height required shoring with
T-60 in different modulations
(1 m, 1.5 and 2 m).
The post-tensioned beams of 3000
x 1200 were also supported with
tables and shored with T-60.

Description
This infrastructure is part of the high-speed railway line Vitoria
- Bilbao - San Sebastian, within the stretch of Mondragon -
Elorrio.
The viaduct consists of three decks, one has two lanes of
international width (14 m) and two have only one lane, both
8 m wide.
Being 223 m long, each deck is supported on four piers with a
maximum height of 41 m and a span between piers of 49 m. A
special construction process with less supports on the ground
was applied to minimise the environmental impact.
ULMA Solution
The box section of the deck, with 3.64 m high, is executed
in two stages with ENKOFORM H-120 formwork. At first, the
bottom slab and the side walls and at second, the top slab and
wings.
The formwork is supported on a gantry falsework which consists
of H-33 trusses that transfer the loads to a temporary T-500
tower in the middle of the span and to the piers through MT
Gantry Brackets.

Description
Much of this area is occupied by the Atlantic Park of the
Santander city council, and is an urban area of great ecologic
interest. The project is part of a series of measurements
directed to relieve traffic congestion in the area through its
reconfiguration and the creation of new transverse routes.
The Las Llamas Bridge crosses the river bed of the same name
with spans between piers of 102 m. Designed in concrete, the
bridge deck consists of a central box and corresponding lateral
cantilevers. The central box is 5.8 m wide and 2.25 m deep.
It is a through arch bridge whose top rises at the centre
60 m above the bridge deck. The base of the arch structure
continues below the deck as straight inclined piers until
supporting on inclined hinged bearings. The longitudinal
distance between bearings is 81.6 m. The arch depth is
variable growing larger from the centre (72 cm) towards the
intersection with the bridge deck (120 cm).
The bridge deck is suspended from the arch by 18 pairs of
steel wire suspender ropes placed every 2.4 m. The maximum
distance between the arch and the deck level is 7.8 m.
ULMA Solution
ENKOFORM H-120 was used for the changing bridge
geometry. Its flexibility is capable of covering all kinds of
geometries and concrete pressures.
The lighter areas were shored on OC and the heavier on T-500
Shoring. At the abutments, the formwork was supported on
Gantry Brackets MT. The abutments themselves were built with
ORMA vertical formwork.

Description
The project involves the connection between the bypass road
of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the motorway GC.2 in the
stretch of Tamaraceite-Tenoya-Arucas-Costa.
The 113 m high Barranco de Tenoya viaduct is one of the
highest viaducts on piers of Spain. The deck is 530 m long and
has three central spans of 128 m, two lateral spans of 73 m
and a width of 27 m. The piers reach a height of 115 m.
ULMA Solution
For the construction of the bridge, the balanced cantilever
method was used, growing from the piers towards the centre
of the span. The variable section of piers 2 and 3 was built
with the ATR system which had to be adapted to the changing
shape at each new pouring stage.
The constant section piers 1 and 4 were built with Climbing
System 2000. And high load capacity G Heavy Duty Bracket
suited the construction of the pier segments.

Description
This is the longest expressway of Poland that links the area of
Bielsko-Biala with Slovakia. The stretch between this Polish city
to Żywiec is a dual carriageway road, while the Slovakian part
will be only single lane with the possibility to add a second one
in the future.
The project comprises the construction of the “Krakowska”
exit having a diamond shape and the “Mikuszowice” exit being
irregularly structured, and includes the redesign of the road to
suit the requirements of the new expressway.
The primary structure is the overpass WS10. With four lanes and
pre-stressed double beam bridge deck, it reaches a length of
460 m. ULMA always provided the most cost-effective solution
for all structures.
ULMA Solution
The ENKOFORM HMK system was chosen as bridge deck
formwork capable of adapting to any section with standard
system components. The Shoring System T-60 supported the
formwork at more than 15 m height. It notably speeded up the
construction process, and secured the load transfer.
The overpass WS10 over the Biala River bridges a 24 m span
with profiles resting on MK towers adapting to the specific
geometries. Due to the characteristics of the structure, the
concrete placement was done in 20 stages (5 stages per each
lane). The longest bridge deck section poured was 159.3 m,
and 60 m the shortest.
All level crossings, road entrances and exits were abolished;
instead several overpasses with spans of up to 15 m were
designed and solved with ALUPROPs for an unhindered flow of
traffic.

Projects // Bridges
Description
The 795 m long bridge has three separate carriageways: two of
13.36 m width for vehicular traffic and a third of 12.76 m for
trams, pedestrians and bicycles. The bridge has 10 between 45
and 160 m long spans.
ULMA Solution
ULMA supplied the material for the construction of the steel-
concrete composite bridge deck, abutments, piers, overpasses
and retaining walls. A form carrier consisting of standard MK
system components was used to build the bridge deck wings.
This structure split into 3 modules to ease the assembly provides
the necessary stiffness yet without making the structure
excessively heavy. Moreover, it offers a standard custom made
solution and thus ensures maximum cost-effectiveness.
To increase the pace of works, 12 form carriers of 25 m length
each were used. Concrete pouring starts at the centre of the
span with two form carriers moving in opposite direction
towards the respective piers. Thus in each stage 25 m long
stretches are poured. The form carrier moves forward to the
next bridge segment by means of a simple wheel system.
The light weight of the MK system components eases the
manual assembly of large structures. This way, the use of the
crane remains reserved to the lifting of structure modules
previously assembled on the ground. This was a fundamental
factor to reduce costs of the project.

Description
Located in Strykow, the junction of motorways A1 (north-
south) and A2 (east-west) is the second largest of Poland with
estimated 130 thousand vehicles per day.
In addition to the construction of the A1 and A2 stretches
(5 and 2.5 km), an 18 km access road, 10 viaducts, sewerage
under the motorways, connecting roads and exits had to be built.
ULMA Solution
Apart from providing formwork for all structures of the
project, ULMA took on the challenge of carrying out all jobs
simultaneously and in shorter lead limes.
The largest structure of this intersection is the Viaduct WA-244
on A1, over the A2. Its 3 sections, with 18 m wide and 100 m
long carriageways, are supported at its ends and in the middle
of the span.
ALUPROP and T-60 towers with heights between 7.2 and 8.5 m
were used as shoring along most of the viaduct length.
ENKOFORM HMK was used to form the bridge deck, and
modular formwork for the abutments.

Description
Located in the south of Poland, the 34 km long Motorway A4
connects the cities of Krys and Debica. The bridge over the
Wisłoka River or Overpass E118 is with 1,350 m the largest
structure of the motorway.
This overpass is divided into three sections and has two
carriageways, with one being straight and the other being a
constant curve.
ULMA Solution
The characteristics of the design required the use of two
construction systems: the conventional with T-60 and OC shoring
structures, and the incremental launching method. This was the
first time that a bridge with a deck of two inner cross-sectional
hollows has been constructed in Poland. The proposed solution
made it possible to build stretches of 30 m a week, so that the
construction time for each segment was reduced by 50%.
ULMA designed and supplied the formwork for the entire
concrete structure as well as for the four fixed pre-fabrication
areas where the incrementally launched segments were
manufactured.
The bottom of the bridge deck was built with the MK System
covered with plywood. MK offers solutions for this, as for many
other types of applications with the use of standard material.
As wing formwork, ENKOFORM H-120 beam-based formwork
was used.
The bridge deck construction was carried out in two stages.
The first stage consisted in the pouring of the lower slab of
the bridge deck together with the side walls. In the second
stage, the top slab was poured. The solution offered by ULMA
allowed building the 32 segments, each of 30 m, of both
bridge decks in weekly cycles.
To ease the works under adverse weather conditions and
improve the hardening of the concrete, a temporary roof
covering fixed pre-fabrication areas was installed. This was
done with BRIO Modular Scaffolding supported on MK towers
and moved on rails.
For this stage no shoring between piers was required. This
allowed developing a simple procedure, without powerful
auxiliary means and a minimum effect on the environment.
ULMA did not only get involved in the construction of this
bridge, but supplied material for other 13 civil engineering
structures on the A4 Motorway.

Description
This bridge is part of the Motorway S3, which will link the
Baltic Sea with the Czech Republic. It is a long bridge with two
independent carriageways built with the incremental launching
method in 17 pre-stressed stretches of up to 45 m long.
ULMA Solution
For the construction of the bottom, the wings and the slab of
the viaduct, ENKOFORM HMK was used.
The box height in the centre is 3 m with a variable slab
thickness ranging between 25 and 48 cm. The road runs at
14 m height with a constant curvature radius of 1,200 m.
Both structures were divided into 34 segments of up to
22.5 m which were then incrementally launched. Each
carriageway reached nearly 15,000 tons of weight in the last
stage of assembly.
The incremental launching method bases much work at one of
the abutments, apart from reducing requirements for shoring
solutions.

Description
This variable section bridge, located to the north of Italy, has
three spans and was poured in situ.
Project details:
· Bridge length: 180 m
· Bridge width: 11.5 m
· Deck thickness: between 1.5 m and 8 m
· Transverse inclination: 3.5%
· Radius: 140 m
· Pier height: 5 m
· Distance between piers: 100 m
ULMA Solution
After pier construction, the bridge was completed in three
stages. The 70 m long stretch between the abutment and the
pier was built with horizontal beam-based formwork and full
shoring.
After concrete hardening and falsework removal, the same
material was used in a symmetrical manner between the
abutment and the pier on the other side of the bridge. A high
capacity shoring tower on a temporary footing supported
the central part of the bridge (40 m). The distance between
bearings was spanned with high load capacity trusses carrying
the formwork.
The specific curvature and the inclined geometry were formed
with spindles adjustable into any direction on the shoring. This
ensured a perfect adjustment without using wood templates,
which brought high cost savings.

Description
The Plati Viaduct steel-concrete composite bridge is part of
the Bovolino - Bagnara motorway in Calabria, southern region
of Italy. This project consists of two 320 m and 400 m long
viaducts.
ULMA Solution
ULMA contributed an innovative solution for the construction
of the reinforced concrete slab of the composite bridge deck.
Two longitudinal steel beams with heights between 2 and
2.3 m were used to suit the curvature of the bridge deck girder.
The 12 m wide and between 22 cm (at wing edges and central
span) and 35 cm (on steel beams) thick bridge deck was built
with a form carrier with structural trusses and beam-based
formwork.
The 24 m long form carrier eased weekly pouring cycles of
22 m. The form carrier structure has eight transverse trusses
which carry the wing formwork. It moreover includes working
platforms and two trusses supporting the structure that moves
on rails.
ULMA also supplied steel formwork for the construction of the
38 circular piers. These were built in three stages with climbing
brackets and trusses that sustain the formwork and that
moreover enable to build pier caps in a single pour.

Description
The project is an overpass over the railway in Otopeni, on
Bucharest’s ring road.
The pylon is 47.65 m high with two legs 20º inclined with
respect to the vertical, which are horizontally linked by two
beams at 25 m and 41 m, respectively.
The curved legs are of variable section and 28.3 m high. From
there on, the section of both arms is constant.
ULMA Solution
ENKOFORM V-100 formwork was applied. The four outside
panels were supported on CR-250 Climbing Brackets.
Horizontal working platforms ensured workers’ safety.
Each set, consisting of one panel on two braced climbing
brackets, was lifted independently by crane to be transferred to
the next pouring stage.
The panels were held with Ø15 tie rods to withstand up to
40 kN/m2 of concrete pressure.
BRIO Modular Scaffolding provided access stairs and working
platforms to the pylon.

Description
The bridge over the Grand River links for the first time since
1963 two economically important areas, Kitchener and
Cambridge. It moreover enhances the connection with one of
the major motorways of the country, the 401.
With a length of 247 m, it consists of 4 spans. The largest one,
95 m, bridges the Grand River.
The construction method of on-site incremental segments for
the longest span turned the bridge into the first one built in
Ontario with this technique since the 80s. ULMA put the most
advanced system and experienced specialists in the application
of the system at the disposal of the customer to construct a
bridge suiting a mountainous geography with a technique rather
popular in Europe.
ULMA Solution
In this case, two Form Carriers CVS were used. They were
placed at opposite ends, each one starting off from one pier
of the span and moving forward simultaneously towards each
other until the centre of the span. A total of 19 segments
of 4.75 m length each were built. The flexibility and easy
adaptation of the system provided a powerful solution for the
continuously varying bridge deck sections in each advance of
the form carrier.
ULMA, in addition to the supply of the material, provided
engineering service, pre-assembly of the structure and on-site
assistance.
Based on the modular concept of the MK System, this form
carrier adapted well to the different cross-sections. The inside
and outside formwork was independent from each other
which allowed of shorter work cycles. The use of MK standard
components reduces the weight and costs of the equipment
compared to other custom-made form carriers.
The piers of a height of 15 to 18 m were built with ORMA
formwork on CR-250 Climbing Brackets. Each set of formwork
with large working platforms is moved in a single crane lift to
the next building stage.

· Length: 700 m
· Width: 15.2 m
· Deck thickness: between 3.5 m and 10 m
· Pier height: 11 m
· Span between piers: 91 m
ULMA Solution
The construction of the viaduct was carried out with balanced
cantilever form carriers with heights between 3.5 and 10 m.
For its ease of adaptation to each new pouring stage,
ENKOFORM with DU-100 walers and VM20 timber beams were
used on the form carrier.

Description
It is a three span viaduct bridge with spans of 55.9 and 60 m
measured along the central axis of the viaduct. The bridge deck
consists of two “box beam” type steel beams supported on two
piers and two abutments.
· Bridge deck width: 21.7 m
· Curvature radius: 370 m
· Superelevation: 6,9%
· Inclination: 7,4%
ULMA Solution
Given the uneven terrain, T-60 shoring towers were erected at
different heights. A consistent surface required as support for
laying the steel beams was thus provided.
Small, low T-60 towers eased the assembly of these beams and
their subsequent lifting to heights between 16 and 20 m.
BRIO Modular Scaffolding was used as auxiliary means of access
to workplaces.
The partnership between ULMA and the customer with respect
to design and work execution led to an optimal result.

Description
This emblematic project of the City of Lima involves the
construction of a 12.5 km long elevated viaduct and 8 train
stations. The train is going to solve traffic problems and the chaos
of public transport suffered by more than 300,000 passengers
every day.
ULMA Solution
Faced with different structures and short lead times, ULMA
decided in favour of the MK system as primary solution for all
configurations. A qualified team and powerful logistics ensured
the material supply within the agreed deadlines.
ENKOFORM VMK was used as vertical formwork for the more
than 400 piers of the viaduct.
The formwork exceeding 7 meters height and of octagonal
section had to withstand the high concrete pressure. For the
bottom and sides of the pier caps, ENKOFORM HMK formwork
shored by ALUPROP towers was used. The same systems
combined with NEVI and COMAIN formwork were applied to
the bottom of slab and beam.
For the curved sections where no pre-stressed beams were
required, MK as well as ALUPROP towers were used to sustain
108 t in each case (27 t per support point).
The versatility of the MK system eased the installation of a
pedestrian bridge and a structure for vehicle traffic. This way,
the high demands of the customer have been fulfilled by far.

Project. With 2.6 m width and spans of 15 m, these structures
were erected on four 0.4 m wide and 2 m high concrete bases
strategically located in the riverbed.
ULMA Solution
The bridge design needed to respond to the natural flow of the
river, its irregular course and to the strong water flow that can
suddenly increase.
Structure construction was the most important stage of the
project. With 2.6 m width and spans of 15 m, these structures
were erected on four 0.4 m wide and 2 m high concrete bases
strategically located in the riverbed. Thoroughly braced MK
trusses were erected. As base for BRIO shoring, MK Walers
were placed perpendicularly as support for the VM20 timber
beams. On this grid, COMAIN modular formwork formed the
bottoms and sides of the concrete beam.

Projects // Bridges
Description
The 93.6 m long bridge links the Marañón river banks and will
boost trade and tourism in the Amazon region.
The mountainous terrain demanded a precise topographic
control. Moreover, the risk of severe flash floods and the lack of
space determined the project design: a false through arch bridge
supported at the ends and built with systems that do not require
the use of crane.
ULMA Solution
With the MK System all required configurations were solved.
The on-site advice during the assembly process and the quick
delivery of 240 t of MK ensured maximum product efficiency.
The 28.30 m high MK shoring towers were erected to hold the
MK arch during its assembly and dismantling process, as well
as to hold the bridge deck formwork. The towers also aided
the concrete pouring process
MK Structures were used to form the curvature of the two
concrete beams of the bridge deck arch. The structure had a
rectangular section with a width of 1.2 m and variable depths
(2 m at the bearings and 1.25 m at the crown), and it was
successfully closed in the centre.
The MK System offered the most efficient and cost-effective
solution. Versatile and adaptable, it provided for 100%
compliance with the tight construction deadlines.

Projects // Bridges
Description
At 300 m of this project, there is a 200 m long and 2.5 m wide
one-way bridge. This constraint led the Ecuadorian government
to build a new bridge for traffic in both directions and with
higher load-bearing capacity. This was intended to promote the
development of this part of the region.
The new 590 m long cable-stayed bridge is divided into 7 spans.
Its foundation consists of 174 piles of between 30 and 35 m
depth. Each tower measures 80.5 m and includes 48 cables (24
per each side), whose function is to hold the steel deck with the
concrete slab that makes up the superstructure.
ULMA Solution
For the construction of the two towers, the superelevation
beams, the intermediate piers and abutments, ENKOFORM
HMK horizontal formwork, ENKOFORM VMK vertical
formwork, push-pull props and climbing brackets were used.
The formwork systems chosen proved to be very versatile in
the construction of the bridge, both for its speed and ease
of erection. The assembled panels adapt effectively to the
structure. This is how the required shape was obtained. The
customer was fully satisfied with the performance and the
technical service offered by ULMA.

Projects // Tunnels
Description
This cut-and-cover tunnel is part of a renovation project for
Terrassa’s public transport system. The route extension will
double daily passenger traffic reaching 32,000.
ULMA Solution
The works were carried out at a height of 17 metres because
on the level below runs the underground and intermediate
slabs are reduced in thickness. As a full shoring structure could
not be implemented, a technically highly complex solution with
vertical formwork carrier at height, shored by Towers T-500,
Structures H-33, Towers BRIO and curved walers, which also
provided cross reinforcement of the concrete at every 5.2 m,
was developed.
The 14 m long form carrier with a vault diameter of 22 m was
used to build a 130 m tunnel in successive pouring stages of
12.35 m.
A pace of work of 3 pouring stages every 2 weeks was
achieved by the repositioning of the form carrier in only one day.
The reuse of the material has been ongoing, since the shoring
towers and main support beams along with the other systems
were dismantled after use and assembled again at the next
pouring stages for subsequent movement of the structure.

Description
Within the high-speed European Atlantic Railway Axis, this
500 m long, 14.4 m wide and 9.9 m high cut-and-cover tunnel
is part of the Baños triangle, a railway juncture of 4 lines
between Valladolid, Palencia and Burgos.
Ulma Solution
ULMA proposed a profitable project from the first step on with
the appropriate technical solution and reusable material, thus
reducing supply expenses, as well as erection and construction
time.
Despite of the clayey ground conditions, the solution met the
deadline marked through the detailed planning of material
supply and erection. The Technical Department of ULMA
designed two light form carriers for the moving of a large
formwork area with the auxiliary means available on the
building site. The rolling systems enabled the construction of
the tunnel section in stretches of 12.5 m without changing
the configuration of the form carrier. After the technical study,
ULMA considered to be the best solution to start from the
central part of the tunnel. The two form carriers moved from
the central part towards opposite ends to build the vault while
erecting the formwork for the side walls. The accomplishment
of works in a synchronous manner contributed to a considerable
saving of time for each stretch. With the same product,
ENKOFORM, the curved geometries of the vault and the side
walls were formed.

Projects // Tunnels
Description
This is a cut-and-cover tunnel (115 m) in the EN-101 Bypass
Ponte da Barca - Arcos de Valdevez, in Portugal.
ULMA Solution
ENKOFORM H-120 and ENKOFORM V-100 beam-based
formwork was used in tiers of 12 m except for the first and last
which was 9.5 m.
The cut-and-cover tunnel was completed in two pouring stages:
side walls and vault.
The side walls were built with double-sided ENKOFORM
V-100 formwork consisting of steel walers and timber beams.
The side walls were shaped with curved walers, while DW15
tie rods bore the concrete pressure. The outside waler was
anchored to the foundation and had a level of built-in
working platforms for pouring work. The inside waler was also
anchored to the concrete of the counter-vault and kept stiff
with push-pull props. Inside and outside formwork units had a
level of built-in working platforms. Both units were moved by
crane using lifting hooks.
For the vault of the cut-and-cover tunnel, the inside formwork
was placed on a vertical formwork carrier moving on rails. The
form carrier consists in a structure of MK walers. It has working
platforms at several levels with handrails of 1.5 m and safe
access.
In vault areas where double-sided formwork was required, a
crane-handled outside formwork joined to a working platform
was used. The working platform consisted of ORMA brackets
to plumb the outside formwork unit.

areas, where it was reduced to 6 m.
ULMA Solution
From the beginning on, ULMA supplied the material
and provided its expertise and professional advice in the
construction of the underground stations.
The modularity of the MK system made it possible to apply
a single solution, and to reuse the form carriers in different
galleries with a minimal need for adaptation to the varying
geometries.
Safety was built-in in the ULMA systems, since all vertical
formwork carriers were equipped with working platforms and
ladders.

Description
This terminal is located at Golding Point and within the Port of
Gladstone.
With the growing demand for coal, WICET will provide a major
impetus to the export volume of Queensland coal industry. On
commissioning, the terminal will double the export capacity of
the Port of Gladstone with up to 80 million tonnes per year.
ULMA Solution
ULMA supplied all the formwork and scaffolding required for
the project, which included a 2 km long jetty conveyor and the
construction of 950 m coal transport channels.
Many factors have been taken into account such as
waterproofing, changes of direction and safety, the latter being
vital in the project.
MK form carriers were used to meet all these requirements.
Waler joints of the MK System provide high stiffness and require
less material. Moreover, they enable the placing of larger pouring
platforms than the usual ones.
The tunnels were built in variable lengths of 15 to 30 m to ease
form carrier adaptation to the changes of direction and varying
slope.
Its hydraulic system provided a smooth stripping, and the electric
motors moved the form carriers at a speed of 6.2 m/minute.
The inside diameter of the tunnels was 6.5 m with variable wall
thickness between 37.5 cm at the top and 70 cm at the bottom
of the side walls.
Moreover, ENKOFORM VMK and ORMA wall formwork and
ENKOFLEX slab formwork has been supplied.

Projects // Hydraulic Construction and Sewage Treatment Plants
Description
Located in Torre de Moncorvo, in the Portuguese district
Bragança, this big river was the only on the Iberian Peninsula
remaining without dam.
The 50 km long reservoir has two power stations located in the
Sabor River. They are going to generate 170 MW of power and
an annual electricity production of 444 GWh.
ULMA Solution
For the construction of this 127 m high and 505 m long dam,
ORMA, BIRA and ENKOFORM V-100 vertical formwork was
used. Single-sided climbing brackets were used, in addition
to supplies of shoring systems, BRIO Modular Scaffolding and
BRIO Ladder. More than 860,300 m3 of concrete were poured.
Working at great height was conducted by following the highest
safety standards. G Climbing Brackets and Climbing Brackets
2000 enabled the installation of large working platforms
remaining horizontal at all times regardless of the inclination of
the dam wall.
ULMA’s experience in such works made it possible to give
best advice to the customer and to use the most appropriate
products for each and one application.
The reliance on logistics centres and the assembly near the
building site made it possible to meet the agreed stringent
deadlines.

Projects // Hydraulic Construction and Sewage Treatment Plants
Description
This large project, located in the Panamanian province of Bocas
del Toro, includes in its main phase the dam of the future
reservoir in the Changuinola River, which will have a capacity
of 223 MW.
In the construction of this 99.2 m high dam, 875,000 m3 of
concrete have been poured.
ULMA Solution
With extensive experience in multiple projects, ULMA devised
a unique formwork solution for the construction of this
RCC-type dam.
For the formwork on the upstream side of the dam, a climbing
system with steel panels has been designed that meets all safety
guidelines. For the downstream side, systems of steel panels
combined with MK System components for high load capacity
structures, common in civil engineering, were used.
600 t of material were supplied on time, thus adequately
responding to customer needs in spite of the demanding rainy
and tropical climate of that area.

Projects // Hydraulic Construction and Sewage Treatment Plants
Description
This plant has two reservoirs at a distance of 4.6 km and
connected by tunnels.
The supplied material was used for the machine room, the
main cavern of 183 m length, 24 m width and 45 m height,
which houses the four turbines generating 333 MW of electric
power.
ULMA Solution
The work was undertaken in three stages:
· Foundations and beams for underpasses. These were built
with MK Trusses for their high load capacity and low height.
· Placing of prefabricated beams and columns. BRIO Modular
Scaffolding in its configuration as towers was used.
Walkways with the MK Systems ensured workers’
safety when moving between scaffolds.
· In-situ pouring of crane lanes. This was done with MK Trusses,
well adapting to the space between columns of 5 and 13 m.
Shored on MK towers, the trusses reached sufficient height at
the centre to enable vehicle traffic at the building site.
With the objective to optimise costs, the material was designed
for use in the first tunnel half, and its subsequent reuse in the
final part of the tunnel.
The continuous contact between ULMA technicians and
the customer contributed largely to the compliance with
construction deadlines.

Projects // Restoration and maintenance
Description
Declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2006, the Vizcaya
Bridge is a symbol for the Industrial Revolution of the late
nineteenth century. It is the oldest transporter bridge of the world.
ULMA has made the most important renovation of the past
decades. The project began in late 2010 with the repainting
of the steel structure after a decision on the colour has been
made by users and experts.
The steel frame with rails from which the gondola is slung was
also in need of repair after its damaging during the Civil War.
ULMA Solution
The structure was completely clad with BRIO Modular
Scaffolding. 800 tonnes of material distributed over 4 towers
of 68 m and the horizontal steel frame of 162 m length. The
scaffolding for the towers was supported on the ground, while
the one for the horizontal structure hung from a truss.
A builder’s hoist was installed to ease the movement of
material and people.
The erection was done in stages, beginning the first with towers
1 and 2 on the Las Arenas bank and with one third of the
scaffolding for the horizontal structure hanging from a truss.
Afterwards, the scaffolding for tower 3 and 4 of the
Portugalete bank was erected, and for the horizontal structure
following the same process of hanging the scaffold from a
truss. This was concluded with the complete erection of the
scaffold for the bridge steel frame.
The scaffolding structure of the towers was also used for the
fitting of the builder’s hoist support platform. This platform was
made with scaffolding platforms resting on 5 m long bridging
beams at a height of 7.5 m.

Projects // Restoration and maintenance
Description
Maintenance of oil platforms performed in Puerto de la Luz
and Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) from oil fields in southern
Africa. Depending on the state of the platform and the type of
work required these technical inspections last between 2 and
4 months.
ULMA Solution
These operations require scaffolding as auxiliary means of great
versatility and quick adjustment according to requirements and
geometries - this is the strength of BRIO Modular Scaffolding.
The time the oil platforms stay in for technical servicing has to
be as short as possible. Therefore a group of scaffolders work
in shifts of 12 hours, morning and night, seven days a week.
