TITTLE :

CIS POTASSIUM DIOXALATO DIAQUA CHROMATE (III)

Date : _______________
Name : _______________
Roll no : _______________
Semester : BS V Chemistry
INORGANIC PRACTICAL
PURPOSE
Purpose of doing this experiment is to prepare potassium diaquabis (oxalate) chromate (III)
dehydrate complexes and study its reaction

ABSTRACT
Chromium forms octahedral complex ion like many transition metals do . In this experiment ,
potassium diaquibic (oxalato) chromate (III) dehydrate Oas formed ‘ Oxalic acid dehydrate and
potassium dichromate were as the starting material in this experiment to prepare the
conmplex.

Potassium dichromate(K2CR2O7) is acrystline ionic solid in red orange colour and it is molecular
weight of 294.15g/mol. It is also inorganic chemical regent where mostly use as an oxidizing
agent in the reaction.

Its molecular geometry is tetrahedral . Oxalic acid dehydrate (H2C2O4.2H2O)is a colourless

crystalline solid .

The reaction is carried out to form a product which is in solid form . Colour of product is black
under sunlight but deep purple under artificial light . Product is octahedral in shape which has
6 cordination number.
APPRATUS
Conical flask , water glass , weighing dish , digital balance , funnel , filter paper , petridish
,mortar and piston , dropper , aluminium sheet , patula.

CHEMICALS REQUIRED
● Oxalic acid dehydrate
● Potassium dichromate
● Ethanol
● Water

CHEMICAL EQUATION

K2Cr2+7H2C2O4+K2Cr2→K3[Cr(Cr2O2)3]+ 6CO2+H20

PROCEDURE
● Prepare mixture of finely ground potassium dichromate (4g) And oxslic acid (10g)
and heap the powder in 15cm diameter evaporating dish
● Place one drop of water in a small depression in the mixture and cover the dish with
the watch glass
● After the short period induction the reactions commences and soon become
vigorous with the evaloution of steam and CO2
● A soloutions of product cannot be formed and hence an equilibrium mixture of cis
mandtrans isomer is not formed
● The outcome of this is a purple viscous to liquid which is added 20ml of Ethanol.
● The mixture is stirred until the reaction product solidifies.
● Solidification is slow decant the liquid and repeat with the second portion of the
ethanol until the the product is entirely crystalline.
● Filter at the pump
● Dry the crystal and weigh them.
OBSERVATIONS DURING EXPERIMENT
Mixture of potassium dichromate and oxalic acid on
edition of one drop of water

Evaluation of steam and Corbondioxide

After filteration crystalline form of a product

CALCULATIONS
Theoretical Yeild : 16g
Actual Yeild :10g
Percentage Yeild =(Actual Yeild /theoretical )*100
%age yield =(10/16)*100
%age yield=0.625*100
%age yield =62.5%

RESULT
The product i.e cis potassium dioxalato diaquaq chromate three ion is ablack colour complex
under the sun light while deep purple in artificial light
PRECAUTION
● Weigh carefully the amount of chemicals
● Take the exactly the given amount of water
● Constantilly stir the solution
● Give proper time for crystal formation
