Now for the details.

What Is a Health Care Sharing Ministry?

For starters, it’s NOT insurance.
It’s simply medical cost-sharing among a group of like-minded folks.
This is how doctors used to get paid… neighbors helping neighbors.
Think about it this way…
Christians created an escape hatch for YOU to legally opt out of the
Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare.
When President Obama and the Democrats drafted the ACA, they
allowed the already existing Christian sharing ministry members to be
exempt from the individual mandate. This exemption is contained in
the Affordable Care Act, Sec. 1501, (B) pg. 148.
This means that under a health sharing program, you won’t be indi-
vidually fined by the IRS… no penalties. Period!
Now consider this… sharing ministries are not new.
If you think about it, churches were instrumental in the development
of the U.S., going all the way back to our founding. Amish and Men-
nonite communities have paved the way in terms of health care
sharing since ages past.
Small-community parishioners provided medical aid to families and
individuals in need. It’s widely considered the main ingredient of our
national success… helping each other.
Over time however, insurance, along with government programs like
Medicaid and Medicare, replaced the small community church sharing
economy.
Church members continued sharing, of course, but on a much
smaller scale.
When the Affordable Care Act was enacted in 2010, an exemption was
carved out for health care sharing ministries. As a result, membership in
sharing ministries has increased from about 200,000 to over one million
today, according to the Alliance of Health Care Sharing Ministries.
HOW TO GET BETTER HEALTHCARE 3
Today, the four largest sharing ministries in the U.S. are Christian
Healthcare Ministries (the first in modern times), Medi-Share,
Samaritan Ministries, and Liberty HealthShare.

How I Discovered Liberty

As you may know, I’m the founder of MedRetreat, the first medical
tourism agency in the U.S.
Since 2003, I’ve helped thousands of UNINSURED folks obtain affordable
surgical procedures at advanced foreign hospitals for pennies on the
dollar. Procedures like hip and knee replacements, heart bypass proce-
dures, spinal fusions, hernias and hysterectomies… just to name a few.
As irony would have it, though, while I was helping the uninsured, I was
diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. The timing couldn’t have been worse, as
my wife and I were in the middle of changing insurance policies.
Even though I should have been able to find a policy for my family in
the private market, I had no such luck. I was uninsured for the first
time in my life.
Of course, I was shocked and had many sleepless nights wondering
what would happen if I was injured in a major car accident or diag-
nosed with cancer. Would my family have to sell all of our assets to
care for me?
Instead of accepting defeat, I chose to research my options. I dug deep
with all the knowledge and experience I’d gained in starting the first
medical tourism agency.
Then I found Liberty.
That’s Liberty HealthShare. Fortunately, my diagnosis of Crohn’s had
been over four years without any symptoms, treatment or medica-
tion… meaning I was eligible for sharing with Liberty HealthShare.
Now, to be sure, I conducted plenty of due diligence on this decision.
I was placing my whole family’s health care in the hands of this
community after all.
Now, after three years of Liberty HealthShare membership, I have to
say I couldn’t be happier with my decision.
I feel so blessed to be a part of a caring community that has the same
positive outlook on life, health, friendship and family.
4 HOW TO GET BETTER HEALTHCARE
I even get updates every month from their member newsletter sharing
amazing stories about other members, as well as new healthy innova-
tions that they are rolling out on a continual basis.

Hundreds of thousands of families have made the same decision I

did… by joining a health care cost-sharing community.

Is a Health Care Sharing Ministry Right for You?

Shared Beliefs
Certainly, health care sharing ministries are not right for everyone.
To be a member of Liberty HealthShare, for example, you have agreed
with their core shared beliefs.
This means that you want to join their community to share medical
bills because YOU believe it is the right thing to do.
You’re not joining simply because it’s convenient or less expensive
than traditional insurance.
YOU believe it’s your moral, ethical and religious duty to care for other
members during times of crisis, just as they will care for you.
Liberty’s Statement of Shared Beliefs…
• They believe that our personal rights and liberties originate
from God and are bestowed on us by God and are not
concessions granted to us by governments or men
• They believe every individual has a fundamental religious
right to worship the God of the Bible in his or her own way
• They believe it is their biblical and ethical obligation to assist
their fellow man when they are in need according to their
available resources and opportunity
• They believe it’s our spiritual duty to God and our ethical
duty to others to maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid
foods, behaviors or habits that produce sickness or disease
• They believe it is our fundamental right of conscience to
direct our own health care, in consultation with physicians,
family and other valued advisers, free from government
dictate, restraints and oversight.
HOW TO GET BETTER HEALTHCARE 5
These beliefs form the moral, spiritual and ethical basis for their
interaction and relationship as a community.

They make a somber and significant pledge to one another that they
will aid, support and devote their resources to one another in the most
personal area of life: their health care! If you can agree with this belief
system, then you passed the first test.

Lifestyle Expectations
To qualify as a sharing member, you must comply with their lifestyle
requirements, which include:

1. Refrain from tobacco use in any form.

2. Follow scriptural teachings on use or abuse of alcohol.

3. Avoid abuse of prescription drugs, which means consuming

prescription medications in a manner not intended by the
prescriber that would likely result in bodily harm or dependency.

4. A
bstain from the use of illegal drugs including, without
limitation, any hallucinogenic substance, barbiturates,
amphetamines, cocaine, heroin or other opiates, marijuana,
illegal intravenous drugs or narcotics.

5. E
xercise regularly and eat healthy foods that do not harm
the body.

What this boils down to is that if you are a hard-working, conscien-

tious person who is striving to live a happy, healthy and productive
life, then this is a great program for you and your family.

Equally important is that you believe that our unalienable rights come
from a creator and not man. If so, then this membership community
aligns with your worldview.

With this in mind, Liberty HealthShare won’t share any medical costs
relating to unhealthy habits like smoking, drug abuse or alcohol abuse.

And of course, Liberty HealthShare won’t share any cost relating to

abortion services.

6 HOW TO GET BETTER HEALTHCARE

Terminology
OK, if you are still with me and you can agree with the core beliefs and
follow the lifestyle requirements, it’s time to learn some new words.

Why…? Because it’s not insurance, so the use of insurance terminolo-

gy doesn’t apply.

Let’s quickly review some important terms:

Cost Sharing — Members of a specified group voluntarily

share medical costs.

Monthly Share Amount — The specified dollar amount that a

member of the group pays every month to another member in
need.

Unshared Amount — This is the amount that YOU have to

pay before sharing begins.

Eligible Expenses — The types of medical expenses permissi-

ble to share in as defined by the sharing guidelines.

… OK, I’m guessing you see the pattern here?

So you shouldn’t call a Christian sharing ministry and ask about their
insurance plan. They don’t have one.

Instead, you should ask about their member cost sharing program.

Pre-existing Conditions
Since health sharing ministries are not considered insurance, pre-existing
conditions are not required by law to be shared.

So if you have a bum knee and you are thinking about replacing it in
the near future, you shouldn’t enroll in a health cost-sharing program
and expect that the members will share that expense a few months
into your membership.

If you’re a heavy smoker and refuse to kick the habit, don’t expect to
be accepted into the membership.

However, a great benefit with Liberty HealthShare is their HealthTrac

HOW TO GET BETTER HEALTHCARE 7

program. This program is for sharing members who qualify for mem-
bership but have certain pre-existing health conditions that can be
improved with lifestyle changes.

Such conditions include diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, high

cholesterol and obesity, as well as tobacco use for those who are
willing to make positive changes in their daily habits.

Each HealthTrac participant is assigned a health coach to develop a

personal plan for achieving goals related to their condition or diagno-
sis. Regular communication with the coach and tracking of progress is
part of the program. Participation in HealthTrac is an additional $80
per month. This charge drops off when members graduate from the
program by meeting and maintaining their health and wellness goals.

All membership applications are reviewed individually by Liberty

HealthShare’s medical staff for enrollment eligibility.

Liberty HealthShare Program Options

Liberty HealthShare offers three program options… (1) Liberty Share,
(2) Liberty Plus and (3) Liberty Complete.

My family chose the Liberty Complete (below), which is the most

comprehensive and popular sharing program. Every month, we share
$449.00. We set it up so that this amount is automatically withdrawn
from our bank account. So EASY!

Liberty has their own proprietary software called a ShareBox, which

automatically withdraws from our account to disperse to members in
need. My ShareBox contains my account details and even provides the
option to send a quick “get well” message to the member whose
medical treatment my funds will help to pay for.

In addition to the monthly share amount that I contribute, I am

responsible for the annual unshared amount (AUA), which is $1,500
of eligible expenses for my entire family over a year.

Once we cross the AUA threshold, Liberty members share 100% of

eligible medical bills up to $1,000,000… per incident.

What about meds, dental, vision and hearing?

8 HOW TO GET BETTER HEALTHCARE

These items are not considered eligible for sharing. However, this
program does come with a strong health care discount card, provided
by SavNet. SavNet offers deep discounts on pharmacy, dental, vision
and even chiropractic service.

Liberty also offers video doctors with their program. If you need to
speak to a doctor but don’t want to crawl out of your bed, get dressed
and drive into town to see one… you don’t have to.

Simply use Liberty’s video platform to speak with a doctor through

your computer. This
doctor can even
prescribe certain
meds and/or refills.
So convenient!

And let me tell you,

I sure sleep even
better at night
knowing that I have
such a robust
program.

It’s also nice that I

feel like I’m part of a
community of
like-minded folks
who care about their
health and MINE.

What Is “Shared” by Liberty

HealthShare Members
Medical costs are shared on a per person per incident basis for illness-
es or injuries incurring medical expenses after the membership effec-
tive date when medically necessary and provided by or under the
direction of licensed physicians, osteopaths, urgent care facilities,
clinics, emergency rooms or hospitals (inpatient and outpatient) or
other approved providers of conventional or naturopathic care.

Medical expenses eligible for sharing include, but are not limited to,
home health care, physician and hospital services, emergency medical

care, medical testing, X-rays, ambulance transportation and prescrip-
tions, unless otherwise limited or excluded by their guidelines.

Members share these kinds of costs:

1. Hospital Charges. Inpatient or outpatient hospital treatment or

surgery for a medically diagnosed condition.

2. Physician Services. Physician services for the diagnosis, treatment,

management or prevention of an illness or injury.

3. Emergency Room. Emergency room services for stabilization or

initiation of treatment of a medical emergency condition provided
on an outpatient basis at a hospital, clinic or urgent care facility,
including when hospital admission occurs within 23 hours of
emergency room treatment.

4. Prescription Drugs. Prescriptions 45 days before and after each

related medical expense incident.

5. Chiropractic Treatment. Up to 12 visits per membership year for

treatment of skeletal or musculoskeletal disease or injury by a
person holding a doctor of chiropractic (D.C.) degree and such
applicable and current licensure, certification or registration (“li-
cense” or “licensed” or “licensure”) in the state or jurisdiction
where the services are rendered.

6. Physical Therapy. Up to 20 visits per membership year for physical

therapy by a licensed physical therapist. (See Article IV. Section C.
13 of the Liberty HealthShare Sharing Guidelines for more details.)

7. Home Health Care. Skilled care services at home for up to 30 days

by a home health care agency for each related medical expense
incident, provided such home care reduces the expected medical
expense and replaces hospital or nursing home services.

8. Ambulance. Emergency land or air ambulance transportation to the

nearest medical facility capable of providing the medically necessary
care to avoid seriously jeopardizing the sharing member’s life or
health.

9. Naturopathic and/or Alternative Treatments. Treatment provid-

ed by a naturopathic physician or doctor of naturopathy (ND or

10 HOW TO GET BETTER HEALTHCARE

NMD), a traditional naturopath or other practitioner of alternative
treatments is eligible for sharing if such treatment meets the
following criteria:

1. I t treats a medically diagnosed condition.

2. I t is less invasive than conventional medical treatment for
the diagnosed condition.
3. It is less costly than conventional medical treatment and is
expected to prevent more costly future conventional treatment.
4. I t is presented for prior approval to Liberty HealthShare and
the member agrees to any alteration of the treatment plan
made by Liberty HealthShare.

10. Prosthetics, and their replacement, if medically necessary.

11. Medical Costs Incurred Outside the United States. Charges for
the care and treatment of a medically diagnosed condition when
treatment outside the United States is financially beneficial or
when traveling or residing outside the United States. Eligibility of
such charges are subject to all other provisions of the guidelines.
Medical billing is requested to be submitted in English and con-
verted to U.S. currency.

Will Your Doctor Accept Liberty HealthShare?

For starters… once you become a member of Liberty HealthShare,
you’ll get this firm plastic membership card to carry in your wallet.

It has all the 800 numbers that you and your doctor need.

Chances are your provider will gladly accept this program.

Reason being… your doctor will be

reimbursed (paid) the Medicare allowable
amount plus 50% for the prevailing area
where service is rendered.

Inpatient services are reimbursed at the

Medicare allowable amount plus 60%.

HOW TO GET BETTER HEALTHCARE 11

Outpatient services are reimbursed at the Medicare allowable amount
plus 70%.

Translation… they’re getting paid above the Medicare rate.

But that’s not all… medical bills are processed within 30–45 business
days.

What’s not to like about the program?

The administration of Liberty HealthShare will work to get your doc or

provider on board with this cost sharing program.

What About Medicare?

Did you know the fastest-growing population demographic is people
over 100 years old?

This means the odds are more in your favor that you are going to live a
longer life. So if you aren’t exercising enough, get out there and take
up tennis… or golf… or swimming… or anything else to keep your
body active so that you can live with vitality.

But know this… your long life is a BIG problem for Medicare.

Medicare policy analysts predict that Medicare will be insolvent by

2029. That’s just over 10 years away, folks… out of money.

Considering these facts… you may encounter a situation in your 80s

or 90s where you need a hip or knee replacement but Medicare funds
simply will not be available.

What about your Medicare supplement?

You should know that if Medicare denies your medical treatment, your
supplement will not work either.

This is where a Christian cost-sharing program would be an excellent

support.

If you join Liberty HealthShare to serve as a Medicare supplement,

you’ll have to use your Medicare funds first.

12 HOW TO GET BETTER HEALTHCARE

However, if Medicare rejects your prescribed treatment plan, provided
it is an eligible, shareable expense, Liberty HealthShare will share the
unfunded portion.

I’ve recommended this program to my mom and her friends, and they
absolutely love it.

The Bottom Line

Regardless of who won the presidential election, or which party
prevails in Congress, your health care arrangement will be impacted.

What does this mean for you?

Now is a great time to consider other health care arrangements.

Choose a new health care program that…

…gives you the ultimate freedom and control over your own
health care decisions.

…allows you to choose your own doctor and health care

providers.

…connects you to tens of thousands of like-minded, caring

and health-conscious folks.

In this day and age, your personal health care program should contain
the following benchmarks:

1. H
ealth care should be between you and your doctor.
2. Y
ou should be able to choose your own doctor without
coercion or restrictive networks.
3. Y
our health care should be affordable.
4. Y
ou should have access to the latest health care treatments
WORLDWIDE.

Join Liberty HealthShare. It’s real freedom from insurance that will put
you and your doctor back in control.

Liberty HealthShare is not insurance. It’s simply a medical cost-sharing

program among tens of thousands of like-minded, caring and
health-conscious folks.

Three Additional Health Sharing

Ministries to Consider
1. Christian Healthcare Ministries (CHM)

“Founded in 1981, CHM is the original health care sharing ministry

for Christians.”

Their sharing program is defined by units. A single member is one unit.

Two members are two units, and three or more are three units. Their
three program options are Gold, Silver and Bronze. The Gold Program

14 HOW TO GET BETTER HEALTHCARE

is $150 per month per member. The out-of-pocket expense is called
“personal responsibility,” which is $500 per year for this Gold level.

As their monthly share amount goes down for the Silver and Bronze
program levels, your personal responsibility dollar amount increases.
Their most affordable monthly share program, the Bronze Level, is
only $45 per unit per month, and it comes with a $5,000 personal
responsibility before sharing kicks in.

Through CHM, you will need to collect all the medical provider bills
yourself and submit them to CHM for sharing (payment).

When you receive itemized bills, you will be responsible for sending
bills to CHM along with a “Needs Processing Form.”

CHM doesn’t provide a discount plan for dental and vision. They do,
however, recommend the Careington LiveWell Plan.

CHM can work as a Medicare supplement.

To learn more, click here.

2. Medi-Share

Medi-Share is part of the Christian Care Ministry Inc., which is a

Florida-based not-for-profit corporation.

Their share amounts are based upon the members participating and
the age of the oldest applicant. Their website contains a “Share Calcu-
lator,” where you select the number of applicants, along with the birth
date of the oldest applicant.

After entering my birth year of 1969, I was provided with seven share
options, which ranged between $159–419. The lower monthly share
amount came with a $10,000 “annual household portion.” The highest
monthly share of $419 came with a $1,250 AHP.

Medi-Share actually has a health incentive program in which the

monthly share amounts are reduced by up to 20% for members who
meet the health incentive standards. These standards are determined
by waist measurements, BMI and blood pressure.

Medi-Share also offers a discount program for dental, vision and

hearing.

HOW TO GET BETTER HEALTHCARE 15

As part of Medi-Share’s application process, you will have to complete
their three-page testimony and commitment form, along with the
statement of faith.

To learn more, click here.

3. Samaritan Ministries

Samaritan Ministries was established in Washington, Illinois, by Ted

Pittenger in 1994.

Their health care cost sharing program is based upon the “needs
process.”

Members’ monthly share amounts range between $220–495 and are

based upon household size. So one person would be $220, two people
are $440 and three or more are $495.

However, Samaritan Ministries operates differently from the other

health care cost sharing programs described above, in that the monthly
share amounts are sent directly from the sharing member to the
member in need.

This process is managed by Samaritan’s monthly newsletter, which

directs the members where to send their monthly share amount to the
member in need.

For catastrophic care that amounts to $250,000 or more, Samaritan

Ministries offers a “Save to Share Program.” This program allows
member to set aside extra annual share amounts. These amounts range
between $133–399 and are based on household numbers.

Samaritan offers a discount prescription program powered by

EnvisionRx.
