Discovering

“The secret is sleeping inside us, always
waiting to be discovered”
Discovering Omar

Prologue
By Rodrigo Verdugo.

Discovering Omar is the first novel of the young writer Adolfo

Silva.
Previously he has published Versos dedicados (2004),
Confesiones, mi alma se refleja (2008), Padre estás en el cielo
(2013), La mami Celia (2013) and Mis versos, mi historia,
Escritores Editorial Cl, (2014), works that show different biographic
emotional aspects of this young author. Based on with Michel
Foucault’s idea, specifically in his work The History of Sexuality,
the mechanisms of power are guide through sex, the body and the
life, Discovering Omar, proposes in its plot to show how these
mechanisms act through stereotype of masculinity, and in a
certain way the femininity (hairdressing as a stage in this novel is
a eloquence symbol of this constant) and at the same time
contradict all the binaries schemes of sexuality (the relationship
between Omar Santibáñez and Matteo Dabenne and the
relationship between Eugenia and Alicia are symptomatic in this
regard). From a diegetic narrator, with a partial mastery of the
narrative levels, the story is built quickly and with refinement,
creating an emotional atmosphere quite accomplished throughout
the novel.
The macabre plan of the mother of the protagonist, Amanda
Goic and the complicity of her friend and partner Yolanda Barrera
allows that the drama emerge of the central character. Omar
Santibáñez debates in the very limits of the male identity.
| Adolfo Silva Reyes
The situation the mother is going through made him to change
his course of life, leaving his engagement with Anriette and his
work as PE teacher in a high school in Providencia. The same
Fausto disco, the forbidden place and banned, it will be the
scenery where a carnivally mother and son will see each other
naked and exposed to the deep reality of each of them. The
simulation mechanism will end for both (Omar systematically
denied his status as an escort in front of his mother). Mother and
son were finally victims of the same mechanics. The unconscious,
the repression, the desire, Oedipus, it could also been point out in
the person’s conformation that is in Omar Santibánez character.
Certain dialectic forms of power masked under the oppressive love
are also some features of the protagonist’s mother, but to reduce
the reading of this novel under a psicocritic point of view is to deny
the esthetic and structural value that it possesses. It would also
not be fair to not place our young author in the line of Chilean
writers such as Pablo Simonetti, Carlos Iturra and Mauricio
Wacquez.
Discovering Omar, it is a novel that manages to capture the
reader's attention, and an acceptance of a genre literature, but
at the same time it is a criticism of historical conventions,
parameters and male stereotypes imposed by a society of
consumption.
Discovering Omar

Words of the author

In the first narrative experience I discovered my qualities to tell

a story that comes out of my imagination.
Creating the characters and the fictitious events turns out to
be really fun and gratifying at the same time. I lived with
situations daily that were spun through my limited knowledge to
write a novel. The poet's soul stopped to use unusual clothing,
creating a harmony that allowed me to overcome fears and
doubts about my work.
Discovering Omar is a title with a broad meaning, since the
verb could be completely combined by understanding the
reason for the actions performed by each character.
I discover my new ability, you, he, they and an uncertain
number of readers will discover the mysteries that the novel
defines in a way they will undertake advancing in each chapter.
We discover Omar Santibánez Goic, the result of the
everything: desirable body and an urgent necessity that
allows him to know different worlds, interact with other skins,
shades and human beings ready to establish in the relation
of “money in exchange of pleasure”
We are all born with an indefinite future. The destiny will
focus our perspective of life according to the familiar habits,
that our photographic memory installs in the brain and we
base on what society says.
Anyone can guess future situations; we just plan projects
and we try to accomplish goals (desire that not all people
have for instinct).
Omar did not anticipate he will be an escort. Moments of
life made him to go in that direction and work in that special
activity.
| Adolfo Silva Reyes
Anyway, he learnt something positive, because when exploring
certain environments that he develops his trade, he also discovers
himself as a human being. The scams, hidden ideas, feelings
never known, open his eyes to show him that people do not
accomplish all their goals. These are coming out during our
journey and invite us to opt voluntarily for one of them.
Discover yourself, disinhibit your desires and install
yourself to enjoy the pleasure with Omar, who invites each
reader to enter a history and strip their prejudices.
Discovering Omar

Chapter
I

Every morning, at the same place, an athletic thirty-year-old

man, was doing his daily running routine at the Bustamente
Park. At that time, the furtive women gaze that they were going
ahead to work seem to boost Omar Satibáñez Goig's ego.
Professor of Physical Education, belongs to the group of
teachers of the Seminar Company Lyceum, had an ideal
stature that complemented his toned vanity in his appearance:
a ninety-meter stood out from the sixty meter his mother has.
Omar had few friends. As a child, he followed his mother
instructions that were imposed on him. This is the reason for the
excessive attachment she formed to refuge in the loneliness left by
her husband's abandonment. Don Renato Santibáñez chose
another way when he met a woman who obsessed him during
Omar's childhood, so he has few memories of that character, who
seemed really "alike", as Amanda says, his mother. During the
marriage, Renato had periods of infidelity.
The gallant man of good position in a mining company met the
requirements that Amanda demanded for her level of egocentrism.
The economic situation was going much better than the current
one, they can enjoy luxuries, travel, comforts, however, something
could not buy the money. Renato left the house saying that he was
going to initiate a project that demanded a long stay in the north,
where the best of his work was concentrated. He promised to
come back, but the following month Amanda receives a letter
written by her husband's handwriting. The letter says

A deep abandonment was confirmed, he had started a
romance with Clara, the women who worked as a
housekeeper and took care of Omar while his mother was
travelling abroad knowing cities and countries. Amanda Goic
never thought that Renato would look at an employee and
less imagined that he would change her.
Since that event, Omar formed an alliance of friendship
with his mother, giving her most of his time to lessen the
feeling of anger that was increasing over the years,
especially when she knew he had with that woman.
The clock strikes 7 in the morning. Omar opened the door of
his house, before entering the living room he turned to look to
the white house in front of him. The window of that house let
him see a half-naked figure of a young woman of her twenties.
Apparently, she was trying to dazzle his neighbor gaze, that
she then obfuscated by closing slowly the rods of the terracotta
burlap curtains.
He smiled and moved his head from one side to the other
with his hand of long, thick fingers resting on the canned
wooden door.
He used to walk in the living room, then go to the hall with long
walks to begging his rite (as Amanda called it). The bathing
session lasted half hour, the time that let Doris, the housekeeper
to make breakfast and talked a few words in the day with his
mother.
Amanda, dressed in a fine nightgown was talking with Doris,
who was used to keep up with the habitual lifestyle of Omar.
Bread perfectly toasted, not so white not so brown, the table
was set with silver dishes, a glass of natural orange juice, a
mug of light milk and fruit.
“Is it normal that a man takes almost an hour to have a
bath?”
“Ma’am, yes, some men also have their eyebrows waxed.
I’ve seen it on tv.
