INFORMATION EXTRACTED FROM AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE MANUAL IN ORDER TO PROVIDE TECHNICAL TRAINING.
AT MOMENT OF ELABORATION ITS CONSIDERED UPDATED, ALL TECHNICAL DATAS, LIMITS AND TOLERANCES USED ON
THIS MANUAL AND SHOULD BE USED
PURPOSE
THE FLIGHT INTERPHONE SYSTEM PROVIDES COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN:
• FLIGHT CREW MEMBERS
• FLIGHT CREW AND GROUND CREW
COMPONENTS
THE SYSTEM CONSISTS OF:
• FOUR AUDIO SELECTOR PANELS
• FOUR INTERPHONE JACK PANELS
• TWO COCKPIT SPEAKERS
• FIVE PRESS TO TALK SWITCHES ALL LOCATED IN THE COCKPIT, AND:
• ONE EXTERNAL FLIGHT INTERPHONE JACK LOCATED AT THE NOSE LANDING GEAR,
• ONE FLIGHT INTERPHONE AMPLIFIER CARD,
LOCATED IN THE AUDIO ACCESSORY UNIT IN THE MAIN EQUIPMENT CENTER
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
COMMUNICATIONS MAY ESTABLISHED BY USING MICROPHONES AND/OR LISTENING DEVICES, IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER:
• WITH A GROUND STATION OR ANOTHER AIRPLANE THROUGH THE AUDIO SELECTOR PANEL AND A SELECTED RADIO SYSTEM.
• WITH OTHER FLIGHT CREW MEMBERS, THROUGH THE AUDIO SELECTOR PANELS AND THE AUDIO ACCESSORY UNIT.
• MONITORING NAVIGATION SYSTEMS THROUGH THE AUDIO SELECTOR PANELS.
ON THE GROUND, THE FLIGHT INTERPHONE IS ALSO USED FOR COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN THE FLIGHT CREW AND THE
GROUND SERVICE PERSONNEL AT THE NOSE LANDING GEAR, THROUGH THE APU REMOTE CONTROL PANEL.
THE FLIGHT INTERPHONE SYSTEM ALSO INTERFACES WITH THE VOICE RECORDER TO PROVIDE VOICE INPUTS FROM ALL AUDIO
SELECTOR PANELS.

COMPONENT DESCRIPTION
PURPOSE
THE AUDIO SELECTOR PANEL PERMITS THE FLIGHT CREW TO SELECT AN AUDIO SYSTEM FOR TRANSMISSION OR RECEPTION.
LISTEN SWITCHES
SELECT THE SOURCE AND CONTROL THE VOLUME OF AUDIO CONNECTED TO A FLIGHT COMPARTMENT SPEAKER OR HEADSET.
THEY ARE PUSH-ON/PUSH-OFF SWITCHES, WHICH ARE ROTATED CLOCKWISE FOR MAXIMUM VOLUME.
UNLESS A CORRESPONDING MICROPHONE SWITCH IS DEPRESSED, A LISTEN SWITCH MUST BE DEPRESSED IN ORDER TO HAVE
ACCESS TO THE AUDIO.
USING HAND-MICROPHONES
TO SELECT THE DESIRED SYSTEM PRESS THE ASSOCIATED MICROPHONE SELECT SWITCH (E.G. VHF - L).
AUTOMATICALLY, THE APPROPRIATE LISTEN CIRCUIT IS ACTIVATED.
ADJUST VOLUME BY ROTATING THE LISTEN SWITCH AND THE COCKPIT SPEAKERS VOLUME CONTROL KNOB.
WHEN THE HAND MICROPHONE’S PTT-SWITCH IS PRESSED, THE SELECTED SYSTEM ENTERS THE TRANSMIT MODE.
WHEN THE PIT-SWITCH IS RELEASED THE SYSTEM COMES BACK TO THE RECEIVE MODE.
NOTE: SOME AUDIO SELECTOR PANELS ARE NOT EQUIPPED WITH A MICROPHONE SELECT SWITCH FOR THE
FLIGHT INTERPHONE SYSTEM. IN SUCH AIRCRAFT BOOM-MICROPHONES MUST BE USED FOR FLIGHT
INTERPHONE OPERATION.
PURPOSE
THE AUDIO SELECTOR PANEL PERMITS THE FLIGHT CREW TO SELECT AN AUDIO SYSTEM FOR TRANSMISSION OR RECEPTION.
FEATURES
• MICROPHONE SELECT SWITCHES
CONNECT THE ACTIVE MICROPHONE TO A RADIO TRANSCEIVER, THE FLIGHT OR SERVICE INTERPHONE SYSTEM, OR THE
PASSENGER ADDRESS SYSTEM. THESE SWITCHES ARE PUSH-ON/PUSH-OFF, AND ARE MECHANICALLY INTERLOCKED SO THAT
ONLY ONE CAN BE SELECTED AT A TIME. THE SWITCH, WHICH IS, DEPRESSED ILLUMINATES WHITE.
• LISTEN SWITCHES
SELECT THE SOURCE AND CONTROL THE VOLUME OF AUDIO CONNECTED TO A FLIGHT COMPARTMENT SPEAKER AND HEADSET.
THEY ARE PUSH-ON/PUSH-OFF SWITCHES, WHICH ARE ROTATED CLOCKWISE FOR MAXIMUM VOLUME. UNLESS A
CORRESPONDING MICROPHONE SWITCH IS DEPRESSED, A LISTEN SWITCH MUST BE DEPRESSED IN ORDER TO HAVE ACCESS TO
THE AUDIO.
PURPOSE
THE AUDIO ACCESSORY UNIT CONTAINS THE CIRCUITRY NECESSARY TO INTERFACE THE VARIOUS INTERPHONE SYSTEMS, THE
PASSENGER ADDRESS SYSTEM, AND VARIOUS CALL SYSTEMS.
FEATURES
THE UNIT CONSISTS OF THE FOLLOWING PC-BOARDS:
ADDITIONAL, THE PA OVERRIDE RELAY FOR THE PASSENGER ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM IS ALSO WITHIN THE AUDIO ACCESSORY
UNIT.
THE UNIT DOES NOT CONTAIN COMPONENTS REPLACEABLE ON THE AIRPLANE. ALL ADJUSTMENTS ARE INTERNAL AND ARE
BENCH SETTINGS.
ALSO IT IS NOT ALLOWED TO SWAP CARDS.
THE PA LEVEL CONTROL SCREW ON THE FRONT OF THE AUDIO ACCESSORY UNIT CAN BE USED TO OBTAIN PROPER SOUND
LEVELS FROM THE PASSENGER CABIN SPEAKERS. THIS IS DONE DURING SPEAKER TEST USING A SOUND LEVEL METER.
PURPOSE
THE PILOT’S CALL PANEL PROVIDES THE SWITCH/LIGHT COMBINATION:
• TO MAKE CALLS FROM THE FLIGHT COMPARTMENT.
• TO ALERT THE CREW OF INCOMING CALLS.
SELCAL SWITCH/LIGHT
THE SELCAL SWITCH/LIGHTS NOTIFY THE FLIGHT CREW OF A GROUND-TO-AIR-CALL RECEIVED BY VHF AND HF
COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS.
THE SELCAL DECODER RESETS AND TURNS OFF THE LIGHT, WHEN:
• THE ILLUMINATED SWITCH/LIGHT IS PRESSED OR
• THE ASSOCIATED RADIO’S PRESS-TO-TALK MIC SWITCH IS PRESSED.
PURPOSE
THIS SWITCH ALLOWS TO CONNECT OR DISCONNECT THE SERVICE INTERPHONE MICROPHONE CIRCUITS TO THE JACKS
LOCATED OUTSIDE OF THE PRESSURE CABIN.
THIS SWITCH IS LOCATED ON THE RIGHT SIDE PANEL P61.
PURPOSE
THE INTERPHONE JACK PANELS PROVIDE THE CAPABILITY OF PLUGGING A BOOM MIC/HEADSET FOR TRANSMITTING AND
LISTENING THROUGH THE ASP AND A HEADSET TO MONITOR SELECTED COMMUNICATIONS.
THE NOSE WHEEL WELL JACKS PANEL GIVES ACCESS TO THE FLIGHT INTERPHONE SYSTEM FOR DISPATCH PURPOSES.
COMPONENT LOCATION
INTERPHONE JACKS
PURPOSE
THE CONTROL WHEEL PTT SWITCH IS USED FOR KEYING OF THE SELECTED COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS (R/T) WHEN THE
ROCKER IS PRESSED IN THE UPPER POSITION OR KEYING THE FLIGHT INTERPHONE SYSTEM WITH THE ROCKER PRESSED IN
THE LOWER POSITION.
DUE TO THE NEGATION OF THE UPPER INPUT AT THE AND-GATE THE INTERPHONE AUDIO IS ONLY SWITCHED THROUGH, WHEN
THE PU SWITCH ON THE CONTROL COLUMN OR ASP IS PUSHED AND THE HAND MIKE’S PIT SWITCH IS OPEN (NOT PUSHED).
THAT MEANS: THE FLT INT CANNOT BE ACCESSED BY USING AN HAND MIKE.
MALFUNCTION REPORTED:
SPEAKER WILL NOT MUTE USING HAND MIKE. AUDIO
SELECTOR PANEL IN OXY.
PURPOSE
THE CABIN INTERPHONE SYSTEM PROVIDES COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN:
• CABIN ATTENDANTS
• CABIN ATTENDANTS AND FLIGHT CREW
THIS SYSTEM ALSO INTERFACES WITH THE SERVICE INTERPHONE AND PASSENGER ADDRESS SYSTEM AND OPERATES THE
ELECTRONIC CHIME UNITS.

THE SYSTEM ALLOWS DIALING FROM EACH HANDSET OR THE PILOT’S CALL PANEL TO ADDRESS CALLS TO SPECIFIC STATIONS.
• PILOTS TO A CERTAIN ATTENDANT STATION.
• PILOTS TO ALL ATTENDANT STATIONS.
• ATTENDANT TO A CERTAIN ATTENDANT STATION.
• ATTENDANT TO THE PILOTS.
• ATTENDANT TO ALL ATTENDANT STATIONS AND TO THE PILOTS.
WHEN A CALL IS MADE THE ASSOCIATED CALL LIGHTS AND CHIMES COME ON. VOICE COMMUNICATION CAN BE EITHER
BETWEEN SPECIFIC ATTENDANT STATIONS AND/OR THE FLIGHT CREW OR AS A PARTY LINE WITH ALL STATIONS INVOLVED.
VOICE COMMUNICATIONS ARE PROVIDED THROUGH THE CABIN INTERPHONE HANDSETS OR THE AUDIO SELECTOR PANELS.
ALL CIRCUITS ARE VOICE ACTIVATED SO NO BACKGROUND NOISE IS PRESENT.
PURPOSE
THE HANDSET PROVIDES CAPABILITY TO:
THE MICROPHONE CIRCUIT CONTAINS A NOISE-CANCELING, DYNAMIC MICROPHONE AND SOLID STATE PREAMPLIFIER. THE
EARPIECE IS A STANDARD TELEPHONE-TYPE SPEAKER. A MAGNETIC CRADLE SWITCH LOCATED AT THE HANDSET ENABLES THE
HANDSET FUNCTIONS INCLUDING THE CALL LIGHT RESET FUNCTION AFTER HOOK UP.
PURPOSE
THE ELECTRONIC CHIME UNIT GENERATES A MUSICAL CHIME SIGNAL IN RESPONSE TO VARIOUS SYSTEM INPUTS.

THE UNIT CREATES EITHER A HI OR HI/LO CHIME IN RESPONSE TO THE:
• CABIN INTERPHONE
• PASSENGER ADDRESS
• PASSENGER SERVICE AND
• PASSENGER SIGNS SYSTEM.
PURPOSE
THE SERVICE INTERPHONE SYSTEM IS USED FOR COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN THE:
• SERVICE INTERPHONE JACKS
• SERVICE INTERPHONE JACKS AND THE CABIN ATTENDANTS HANDSETS
• SERVICE INTERPHONES JACKS AND THE FLIGHT CREW AUDIO SELECTOR PANELS.

POWER IS FROM THE 28V DC BATTERY BUS THROUGH THE CAB/SERVICE CIRCUIT BREAKER ON THE P11 PANEL.
INTERIOR JACKS
INTERIOR SERVICE INTERPHONE JACKS ARE THE JACKS LOCATED INSIDE THE PRESSURE CABIN.
INTERIOR JACKS ARE CONNECTED TOGETHER THROUGH MIXING CIRCUITS AND AMPLIFIERS IN THE AUDIO ACCESSORY UNIT.
EXTERIOR JACKS
EXTERIOR JACKS ARE THE JACKS LOCATED OUTSIDE OF THE PRESSURE CABIN.
EXTERIOR JACKS ARE CONNECTED THROUGH THE SAME CIRCUITS AS DESCRIBED AND AN ON/OFF SWITCH ON THE P61 PANEL.
THE SERVICE INTERPHONE ON/OFF SWITCH HAS ONLY EFFECT TO THE MICROPHONE CIRCUITS.
GENERAL
THE JACKS LOCATED OUTSIDE OF THE PRESSURE CABIN ARE CONTROLLED BY THE SERVICE INTERPHONE SWITCH ON THE P61
PANEL WHILE THE OTHERS ARE CONNECTED ALL TIMES.
PURPOSE
THE SERV INTPH ON/OFF SWITCH ALLOWS THE FLIGHT CREW TO CONNECT OR DISCONNECT THE SERVICE INTERPHONE
EXTERIOR MICROPHONE CIRCUITS.
OPERATION
THE ON POSITION CONNECTS THE SERVICE INTERPHONE EXTERIOR JACKS MICROPHONE LINES TO THE INTERPHONE AMPLIFIER
CARDS IN THE AUDIO ACCESSORY UNIT.
THE OFF POSITION DISCONNECTS THESE LINES.
MALFUNCTION REPORTED:
SERVICE INTERPHONE AUDIO FROM NOSE GEAR JACK VERY NOISY. OTHER JACKS NORMAL.
USING THE FAULT CODE DIAGRAM, DETERMINE WHAT FAULT CODE SHOULD BE ASSIGNED.
THEN, USING THE FAULT CODE INDEX, DETERMINE WHAT MAINTENANCE ACTION IS NECESSARY TO CLEAR THE MALFUNCTION.
PURPOSE
THE GROUND CREW CALL SYSTEM PROVIDES THE ALERTS REQUIRED INITIATING COMMUNICATION BETWEEN GROUND CREW
PERSONNEL AND FLIGHT DECK PERSONNEL.
THIS SYSTEM IS ALSO USED TO ALERT GROUND PERSONNEL IN CASE OF CRITICAL EQUIPMENT COOLING AND POWER FAILURES.

PURPOSE
THE EQUIPMENT COOLING INDICATING CARD PROVIDES SIGNALS TO ENERGIZE THE IRS WARNING RELAY IN THE PILOTS’ CALL
PANEL TO ACTIVATE THE CALL HORN IN CASE OF EQUIPMENT COOLING LOW FLOW OR OVERHEAT CONDITION OR IRS POWER
FAULT.
THIS IS MANAGED BY THE ASSOCIATED LOGIC CIRCUITS ON THIS CARD.
PURPOSE
THE CAPTAIN’S AND FIRST OFFICER’S AURAL WARNING SPEAKERS PROVIDE AURAL TONES AND VOICE MESSAGES RECEIVED
FROM THE WARNING ELECTRONIC UNIT.
THESE SPEAKERS HAVE NO VOLUME CONTROL ADJUSTMENT.
LOCATION
THE SPEAKERS ARE LOCATED LEFT AND RIGHT OUTBOARD OF THE P5 OVERHEAD PANEL.
POWER
POWER FOR THE CALL FUNCTIONS IS FROM THE RIGHT 28V DC BUS VIA THE GND CALL CB.
POWER FOR THE EQUIPMENT COOLING AND THE IRS WARNING CIRCUIT IS FROM THE 28V
HOT BATTERY BUS VIA THE EQUIP COOL GND WARNING CB.

THE CARGO INTERCOM FUNCTION LETS THE LOADMASTER CALL AND TALK TO CARGO PERSONNEL THROUGH
SPEAKER/MICROPHONE UNITS (SMUS) IN THE MAIN DECK CARGO COMPARTMENT. CARGO HANDLERS CAN CALL THE
LOADMASTER STATION FROM ANY OF THE SMUS.
CALLS
THE MCCP SENDS CALLS TO THE FLIGHT DECK, AND THE MAIN DECK SPEAKER/MICROPHONE UNITS (SMUS).
THE MCCP RECEIVES CALLS FROM THE FLIGHTDECK, AND THE MAIN DECK SMUS. THE FLIGHT DECK SENDS CALLS TO THE MAIN
DECK CARGO INTERPHONE JACK PANELS. THE FLIGHT DECK RECEIVES CALLS FROM THE MAIN DECK CARGO INTERPHONE JACK
PANELS AND THE MCCP.
THE INTERPHONE BOX IDENTIFIES CALLS, AND ROUTES CALL INDICATION AND RESET SIGNALS.
AUDIO
LOADMASTER AUDIO IS CONNECTED TO THE INTERCOM FUNCTION WHEN MAIN DECK IS SELECTED ON THE MCCP. THIS
FUNCTION PROVIDES COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE LOADMASTER STATIONS AND THE SPEAKER/MICROPHONE UNITS (SMUS)
IN THE MAIN DECK CARGO COMPARTMENT.
LOADMASTER AUDIO IS CONNECTED TO THE INTERPHONE FUNCTION WHEN FLIGHT DECK IS SELECTED ON THE MCCP. THIS
FUNCTION PROVIDES COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE LOADMASTER STATIONS AND THE MAIN DECK INTERPHONE JACK
PANELS.
THE FLIGHT CREW CAN CONNECT FLIGHT INTERPHONE TO CARGO INTERPHONE BY SELECTING CARGO INTERPHONE ON THE
PILOTS CALL PANEL (PCP).
THE 3 SPEAKER/MICROPHONE UNITS (SMUS) ARE INSTALLED IN THE LOCAL CARGO CONTROL PANELS (LCCPS). THESE ARE
LOCATED ON THE MAIN DECK AT:
THERE ARE 6 CARGO INTERPHONE JACK PANELS IN THE MAIN DECK CARGO COMPARTMENT. THREE ARE INSTALLED ON THE
LCCPS LISTED ABOVE. THE OTHER
THREE ARE LOCATED AT:
THERE ARE 2 MASTER CARGO CONTROL PANELS (MCCP5) ON THE MAIN DECK. THEY ARE LOCATED AT:
FLIGHT COMPARTMENT
THE PILOT’S CALL PANEL IS LOCATED ON THE P5 PILOT’S OVERHEAD PANEL.

MCCP CONTROL
PUT THE SYSTEM POWER SWITCH TO THE EXTERIOR POSITION TO ACTIVATE THE EXTERIOR MCCP. A GREEN LIGHT ON BOTH
MCCPS TURNS ON TO SHOW THAT THE OUTSIDE MCCP IS THE ACTIVE PANEL.
PUT THE SYSTEM POWER SWITCH TO THE INSIDE POSITION TO ACTIVATE THE INSIDE MCCP. A GREEN LIGHT ON BOTH MCCPS
TURNS ON TO SHOW THAT THE INSIDE MCCP THE ACTIVE PANEL.
THE MCCPS ARE ISOLATED FROM EACH OTHER AND CONNECTED TO THE INTERPHONE BOX THROUGH THE DIODE ISOLATION
MODULE. THE ACTIVE CONTROL PANEL PROVIDES DISCRETES TO THE INTERPHONE BOX TO:
CALL INDICATIONS
• THE SMU SENDS A DC INPUT TO THE MCCP WHEN THE LOADMASTER CALL SWITCH IS PUSHED. THIS CAUSES THE MAIN
DECK CALL LIGHT TO COME ON.
• PUSH A LOADMASTER PU OR PRESS THE MAIN DECK CALL SWITCH TO RESET THE LIGHT.
• PUSH THE MAIN DECK CALL SWITCH ON THE MCCP TO OUTPUT A CALL DISCRETE TO THE SMUS. THE CALL DISCRETE

• PUT THE SYSTEM POWER SWITCH ON THE EXTERNAL MCCP TO THE OUTSIDE POSITION TO CONNECT CARGO INTERPHONE
AUDIO TO THAT PANEL.
• PUT THE SWITCH TO THE INSIDE POSITION TO CONNECT AUDIO TO THE INTERIOR MCCP. LIGHTS ON THE MCCPS SHOW
WHICH ONE IS ACTIVE.
THERE IS NO SYSTEM POWER SWITCH ON THE INTERIOR MCCP.
THE FLT DECK CALL SWITCH TURNS ON THE LOADMASTER LIGHT ON THE PCP AND CAUSES A CHIME TO SOUND ON THE FLIGHT
DECK.
• THE FLT DECK CALL LIGHT TURNS ON WHEN THE LOADMASTER IS CALLED FROM THE FLIGHT DECK.
• PRESS THE FLIGHT DECK CALL SWITCH TO RESET A CALL FROM THE FLIGHT DECK.
THE MAIN DECK CALL SWITCH TURNS ON THE CALL LIGHTS ON THE SMUS AND CAUSES A TONE TO BE HEARD FROM THE
SPEAKERS.
• THE MAIN DECK CALL LIGHT TURNS ON WHEN THE LOADMASTER IS CALLED FROM ANY OF THE SM US.
• PRESS THE MAIN DECK CALL SWITCH TO RESET A CALL AND TURN OFF THE LIGHT.
PRESS THE PTT SWITCH TO THE PANEL POSITION TO PROVIDE A MOMENTARY PTT SIGNAL.
• PUT THE SWITCH IN THE HEADSET POSITION TO SELECT A HEADSET WITH INTEGRAL PTT AS THE PTT SOURCE.
THE VOLUME SWITCH ADJUSTS THE LEVEL OF AUDIO HEARD IN THE HEADSET.
THE CARGO COMPARTMENT SPEAKER MICROPHONE UNITS (SMUS) OPERATE AS EITHER A SPEAKER OR A MICROPHONE. THEY
OPERATE AS A MICROPHONE WHEN NO LOADMASTER PU IS PRESENT. AUDIO FROM THE SMUS IS SENT TO THE ACTIVE MASTER
CARGO CONTROL PANEL (MCCP) . NO PU SIGNAL IS NEEDED FOR THIS FUNCTION.
A PU FROM THE MCCP WILL CAUSE THE SMUS SPEAKERS TO BROADCAST AUDIO FROM THE LOADMASTER.
PUSH THE MAIN DECK CALL SWITCH ON THE MCCP TO CAUSE THE SMU CALL LIGHT TO COME ON AND THE SPEAKERS TO
BROADCAST A 3 SECOND TONE.
PUSH THE CALL SWITCH ON AN SMU TO CAUSE A CHIME TO SOUND IN THE LOADMASTER HEADSET AND THE MAIN DECK CALL
LIGHT ON THE MCCP TO COME ON. PROVIDE A LOADMASTER PU OR PRESS THE MAIN DECK CALL SWITCH TO CAUSE THE LIGHT
TO GO OFF.
SELCAL LIGHT/SWITCHES
THE SELCAL LIGHT/SWITCHES NOTIFY THE FLIGHT CREW OF A GROUND-TO-AIR CALL RECEIVED BY VHF AND HF
COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS. WHEN THE ILLUMINATED LIGHT/ SWITCH IS PRESSED, OR THE ASSOCIATED RADIO’S PRESS-TO-
TALK MIC SWITCH IS PRESSED, THE SELCAL DECODER RESETS AND TURNS OFF THE LIGHT.
THERE ARE SIX JACK PANELS LOCATED ON VARIOUS TYPES OF CARGO HANDLING PANELS IN THE MAIN DECK CARGO
COMPARTMENT. THESE PANELS ALLOW CARGO HANDLING PERSONNEL TO SEND AND RECEIVE CARGO INTERPHONE CALLS.
TO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT THROUGH THE SPEAKERS IN THE PASSENGER AND ATTENDANT AREAS.

FIVE OUTPUT INDICATORS AND AN OVERLOAD INDICATOR, ALL RED LED’S, ARE MOUNTED TO GIVE BITE AND FAILURE
INDICATIONS.
THE OVERLOAD INDICATOR IS ENABLED DURING ALL THREE POSITIONS OF THE TEST SWITCH, AND WILL INDICATE ANY FAULT
CONDITION, WHICH CAUSES AN OVERCURRENT IN THE MAIN AMPLIFIER,
CONTROLS
TWO CONTROLS, MASTER GAIN AND AUX GAIN, ADJUST THE GAIN OF THE MAIN AMPLIFIER AND AUXILIARY AMPLIFIER,

OPERATE IS A STATIONARY POSITION USED FOR NORMAL OPERATION OF THE SYSTEM.
LEVEL
LEVEL IS A MOMENTARY POSITION THAT CHECKS THE MAIN AMPLIFIER OUTPUT.
THE FUNCTION SELECT SWITCH DOES NOT VERIFY THE INPUT CIRCUITS. HANDSET, VIDEO, AND BOARDING MUSIC INPUTS,
PRIORITY LOGIC, AND CHIME CONTROLS ARE VERIFIED BY MAKING A NORMAL INPUT FROM THAT CIRCUIT.
GENERAL
THE TEST SWITCH CHECKS THE MAIN AMPLIFIER OUTPUT AND THE SPEAKER NETWORKS. IT DOES NOT CHECK THE INPUT
DEVICES OR THE FRONT END CIRCUITS OF THE AMPLIFIER.
THIS CAN BE VERIFIED BY MAKING ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM EACH OF THE AUDIO SELECTOR PANELS, FROM EACH OF THE
ATTENDANTS HANDSETS AND BY TURNING ON BOARDING MUSIC.
PRIORITY LOGIC IS VERIFIED BY INSURING THAT A HIGH PRIORITY INPUT REMOVES LOWER PRIORITY INPUTS.
CHIME LOGIC IS CHECKED BY MAKING A CALL OR TURNING ON SEATBELT AND NO SMOKING SIGNS.
THE 6 DB AND 3 DB GAIN INCREASES CAN BE CHECKED BY SIMULATING ENGINE-ON AND OXYGEN DEPLOYED CONDITIONS (MM

THE MATSUSHITA RD-AX7308 TAPE REPRODUCER IS A SINGLE - DECK 4 - TRACK HEAD - TAPE TRANSPORT / KEYBOARD
ASSEMBLY THAT PLAYS BOARDING MUSIC AND PRE -RECORDED SELECTABLE PASSENGER MESSAGES. ALL FUNCTIONS ARE
MICROPROCESSOR CONTROLLED.
THIS AUDIO UNIT CONTAINS A:
• TAPE DECK

POWER IS 115 VOLT AC, 400 HZ SINGLE PHASE.

SPEAKER CHARACTERISTICS
TWO TYPES OF 8 - OHM SPEAKERS ARE USED:
• SPEAKERS WITHOUT MATCHING TRANSFORMERS
• SPEAKERS WITH MATCHING TRANSFORMERS.
THE PURPOSE OF THE TRANSFORMER IS TO MATCH THE INPUT LINE TO THE SPEAKERS COIL IMPEDANCE TO PROVIDE
ADJUSTABLE POWER OUTPUT TO THE 8-OHM SPEAKERS.
THIS IS DONE BY TAPPING THE AUDIO INPUT LINE ONTO THE 1K (YELLOW), 2K (RED), OR 4K (GREEN) OHM TAPS OF THE
TRANSFORMER.
COM IS THE BLUE TAP.
SPEAKER INSTALLATION
SPEAKER WITHOUT TRANSFORMERS ARE USED AT THE ATTENDANT STATIONS.
ALL OTHER SPEAKERS IN THE CABIN HAVE A MATCHING TRANSFORMER PASSENGER, ATTENDANT AND GALLEY SPEAKERS ARE 6
1/2 INCH IN SIZE LAVATORY SPEAKERS ARE 5 1/2 INCH IN SIZE.
OPERATION
AN ANNOUNCEMENT TO THE PASSENGER CABIN IS MADE VIA THE INTERPHONE HANDSET LOCATED AT EACH ATTENDANT
STATION.
TO SELECT THE PA-FUNCTION THE PA - PUSH-BUTTON MUST BE PRESSED ONCE. DURING THE ANNOUNCEMENT THE PASSENGER
ADDRESS PUSH - TO - TALK BUTTON MUST BE PRESSED AND HOLD.
PURPOSE
THIS PANEL CONTROLS THE PASSENGER SIGNS.
ANY TIME A PASSENGER SIGN IS SWITCHED ON OR OF A LOW CHIME SOUNDS THROUGH THE CABIN SPEAKERS.
THE CHIME OUTPUT OF THE PA-AMPLIFIER IS ENABLED BY THE FASTEN SEAT BELT AND THE NO SMOKING RELAYS.
PANEL SWITCHES
BOTH SWITCHES PERFORM IDENTICAL FUNCTIONS FOR THERE RESPECTIVE PASSENGER SIGNS:
OFF - PREVENTS ACTUATION OF THE PASSENGER SIGN.
ON - ACTUATES THE PASSENGER SIGN MANUALLY.
AUTO - AUTOMATIC ACTUATION OF THE PASSENGER SIGN:
NO SMOKING SIGN:
• THE LANDING GEAR LEVER IS IN THE DOWN POSITION OR
• THE 10,000 FEET CABIN ALTITUDE SWITCH IS ACTUATED OR
• THE PASSENGER OXYGEN SYSTEM IS DEPLOYED.

AN ANNOUNCEMENT TO THE PASSENGER CABIN IS MADE VIA THE INTERPHONE HANDSET LOCATED AT EACH ATTENDANT

COMPARTMENT. THE CTDS ARE YELLOW ALODINE UNITS WEIGHING 2.9 POUNDS. EACH UNIT HAS SEVEN MULTIPIN

THE CTDS PROVIDE POWER AND PSS TIMING LOGIC TO THE THREE COLUMNS OF SEAT ELECTRONICS BOXES (SEBS). READING
LIGHT AND ATTENDANT CALL DIGITAL OUTPUTS FROM THE SEB ARE TRANSMITTED BY THE CTD TO THE CORRESPONDING LEFT,

OUTPUTS A DISCRETE SIGNAL TO THE PA AMPLIFIER FOR A HIGH CHIME TO ACCOMPANY ATTENDANT CALLS.
A PCU IS LOCATED IN THE ARMREST OF EACH PASSENGER SEAT. THE PCU ALLOWS PASSENGER CONTROL OF READING LIGHT,
ATTENDANT CALL, ATTENDANT CALL RESET, PES CHANNEL SELECT AND VOLUME CONTROL. A HEADSET JACK IS PROVIDED ON
THE UNIT. A CONNECTOR PROVIDES SIGNAL INTERFACE WITH THE SEAT ELECTRONICS BOX.
A PASSENGER SERVICE UNIT DECODER (PSUD) IS LOCATED AT THE FORWARD END OF EACH PASSENGER SERVICE UNIT (PSU) IN
THE CEILING ABOVE EACH SEAT GROUP. TO ACCESS THE PSUD, RELEASE THE LATCH ON THE OXYGEN MODULE/LIGHT PANEL.
THE PANEL SWINGS DOWN TO THE LIMIT OF THE LANYARD. THE LANYARD MUST BE DISENGAGED TO ALLOW THE PANEL TO
DROP TO A VERTICAL POSITION. THE PSUD CAN THEN BE REACHED FOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ABOVE THE OXYGEN MODULE.
THE PSUD ACCEPTS TIMING AND DATA INFORMATION THROUGH THE COLUMN TIMER DECODER AND ITS ASSOCIATED SEAT
ELECTRONICS BOX.
THE PSUD PROVIDES CONTROL OF READING LIGHTS AND ATTENDANT CALL LIGHTS FOR EACH SEAT ROW.
THE PSUD HAS THREE CABLE CONNECTIONS ON THE FRONT OF THE UNIT. THE PSUDS IN A COLUMN ARE SERIES CONNECTED
BY LOOP-TO-LOOP CABLES CONNECTING THE TWO LARGER CONNECTORS ON THE END OF THE UNIT. THE CONNECTIONS ARE
INTERCHANGEABLE. THE SMALLER CONNECTOR PROVIDES INTERFACE WITH THE READING AND ROW CALL LIGHTS.
A TERMINATION PLUG IS CONNECTED TO THE LAST PSUD IN EACH COLUMN. THIS PLUG CONTAINS A JUMPER FOR RETURNING

MULTIPLEXERS, ZONE DRIVERS AND ENTERTAINMENT CD PLAYER.
THE PASS SERV SYST PWR SWITCH CONTROLS THE FWD AND AFT PSS RELAYS WHICH APPLY 115V AC POWER TO THE CTDS AND
PSUDS.
CIRCUIT BREAKERS ON THE P36 AND P37 PANELS SUPPLY 115V AC TO THE PES AND PSS POWER RELAYS.
THE SEBS ARE POWERED BY 35V AC FROM THE CTDS, THEREFORE PES OPERATION REQUIRES THAT BOTH THE PASS ENT SYST
PWR AND PASS SERV SYST PWR SWITCHES BE ON.
THE ENTERTAINMENT TAPE REPRODUCER CAN ALSO BE TURNED ON USING THE BRD MUSIC VOLUME SWITCH, WITHOUT
PLACING THE PES IN OPERATION (REF 23-31-00). THE CHANNEL SELECT SWITCH SELECTS THE DESIRED BOARDING MUSIC
CHANNEL.
THE READING LIGHT SWITCH OPERATES AFTER THE PSS POWER IS TURNED ON. IN THE ON POSITION, ALL READING LIGHTS IN
THE PASSENGER CABIN ARE ON. IN THE OFF POSITION THE READING LIGHTS ARE OFF. THE NORMAL POSITION ON THE
READING LIGHT SWITCH PROVIDES INDIVIDUAL CONTROL OF THE READING LIGHTS FROM THE PASSENGER CONTROL UNITS.
THE ENTERTAINMENT CD PLAYER DELIVERS 10 ANALOG AUDIO CHANNELS TO THE MAIN MULTIPLEXER. THESE SIGNALS ARE
MULTIPLEXED AND SERIALIZED TO THE ZONE MULTIPLEXERS ON A COAXIAL CABLE. PASSENGER ADDRESS (PA) AUDIO, VIDEO
AUDIO, AND TWO TAPE AUDIO INPUTS ARE SUPPLIED DIRECTLY TO THE ZONE MULTIPLEXERS WHERE THEY ARE MULTIPLEXED.
IN THE SEAT ELECTRONIC BOXES A PA MESSAGE WILL OVERRIDE THE SELECTED ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAM CAUSING THE CD-
PLAYER TO STOP DURING THE PA ANNOUNCEMENT. THIS ENSURES THAT ALL PASSENGERS HEAR THE PA MESSAGES. THE
COMBINED SIGNALS FORM 14 ENTERTAINMENT CHANNELS AND ONE PA CHANNEL. THE TRACK AUDIO FROM THE CD-PLAYER IS
RECORDED IN A COMBINATION OF MONO AND STEREO CHANNELS. THE CONFIGURATION OF STEREO CHANNELS PROVIDED TO
THE SEBS IS DETERMINED BY THE SETTINGS OF THE STEREO/MONO TAG SWITCHES INSIDE THE MAIN MUX.
ANALOG INPUTS TO THE ZONE MULTIPLEXER COME FROM THE ENTERTAINMENT CD-PLAYER, VIDEO TAPE REPRODUCERS, AND
PA AMPLIFIER. THESE ANALOG INPUTS ARE CONVERTED TO MULTIPLEXED SERIAL DIGITAL AUDIO AND OUTPUT TO THE THREE
COLUMNS OF SEBS.
THE PASSENGER SERVICE SYSTEM (PSS) CONTROLS THE OPERATION OF THE READING LIGHTS AND ATTENDANT CALL
FUNCTIONS. THE COLUMN TIMER DECODERS (CTDS) DELIVER TIMING AND SYNC PULSES TO THREE COLUMNS OF SEAT
ELECTRONIC BOXES (SEB5), AND PASSENGER SERVICE UNIT DECODERS (PSUDS). THE CTDS PROVIDE INDIVIDUAL TIMING
PULSES TO ALL UNITS SIMULTANEOUSLY. THIS ALLOWS FOR CORRECT SYNCHRONIZATION AND CONTROL.
AT THE SAME TIME IN EVERY FRAME, SWITCHES CLOSE IN THE SEB, CTD, AND PSUD. WHEN A PASSENGER SELECTS THEIR
READING LIGHT ON, A LOGIC 0 IS GENERATED IN THE PCU. IN THE SEB, IT IS CONVERTED INTO A DATA PULSE. THE DATA
PULSE IS SENT TO THE CTDS AND PSUDS TO TURN THE READING LIGHT ON. AT THE SAME TIME IN EACH SUCCESSIVE FRAME,
THE SYSTEM CHECKS WHETHER THE READING LIGHT SWITCH IS ON OR OFF, AND CONTROLS THE LIGHT AS NECESSARY.
WHEN AN ATTENDANT CALL IS MADE, A DATA PULSE IS GENERATED. THIS CAUSES THE PSUD TO TURN ON THE ROW CALL
LIGHT. THE DATA PULSE WILL ALSO CAUSE THE CTD TO TURN ON THE BLUE ATTENDANT CALL LIGHT AND SOUND A HI CHIME
THROUGH THE PASSENGER ADDRESS AMPLIFIER.
THE MULTIPLEXING FUNCTION OF THE PSS IS APPLIED TO THREE COLUMNS OF SEATS. ONE CTD CAN CONTROL PSS FUNCTIONS
FOR THREE COLUMNS OF UP TO 31 SEAT GROUPS PER COLUMN. THE CTD HAS THREE MICROPROCESSOR CIRCUITS. ONE
CIRCUIT CONTROLS THE OUTBOARD RIGHT COLUMN OF SEATS, ANOTHER THE CENTER COLUMN OF SEATS, AND THE OTHER
SET CONTROLS THE LEFT COLUMN OF SEATS.
EACH CTD HAS TIMING AND CONTROL SIGNAL LINES TO CONTROL SEBS AND PSUDS. THE CTD PROVIDES A CLOCK/DATA 1 (C/D
1) AND A C/D 2 LINE TO ONE COLUMN OF SEBS AND PSUDS. AC POWER IS SUPPLIED TO EACH SEB COLUMN FOR PSS AND PES
FUNCTIONS BY THE CTD. THE PSUDS IN EACH COLUMN RECEIVE 115 VOLT AC POWER THROUGH THE PSS POWER RELAYS.
THE FORWARD ATTENDANT’S PANEL PSS CONTROLS INCLUDE THE:
• PASS SERV SYST PWR,
• PASS ENT AND SERVICE SYST TEST,
• FWD MSTR CALL RESET,
• AFT MSTR CALL RESET, AND
• OFF-NORMAL-ON (READING LIGHT) SWITCHES.
THESE SWITCHES CONTROL ALL CIRCUITS OF THE CTD. THE CTD HAS PARALLEL OUTPUTS TO THE MASTER CALL LIGHTS AND
THE HI CHIME. THE PASS SERV SYST PWR SWITCH MUST BE ON FOR THE SYSTEM TO OPERATE.
AFTER FOUR BITS ARE SAMPLED, THE INPUT SWITCH IS SET, AND C/D 1 IS CONNECTED TO THE NEXT SEB AND PSUD. THE CTD
GENERATES A SYNC PULSE AFTER ONE FRAME (31 PULSES). THIS SYNC PULSE RESETS THE FOUR BIT SWITCHES IN ALL SEBS
AND PSUDS OF THE COLUMN. DURING THE NEXT FRAME, CLOCK/DATA PULSES ARE TRANSMITTED ALONG THE C/D 2 LINE. THE
FIRST FOUR BITS ARE APPLIED TO THE LAST SEAT GROUP IN THE COLUMN. THE SEAT GROUPS ARE INTERROGATED AND
CONTROLLED FROM LAST TO FIRST UNTIL THE SYNC PULSE REVERSES THE PROCESS AGAIN. THE CLOCK/DATA LINE TO THE
SEBS FROM THE CTD IS BI-DIRECTIONAL IN ALTERNATE FRAMES. IF A BREAK IN ONE OF THE CLOCK/DATA LINES OCCURS, THE
SYSTEM WILL CONTINUE TO OPERATE.
THE PSUD RESPONDS TO SEB COMMANDS DETERMINED BY PASSENGER CONTROL UNIT SWITCHES. MASTER CALL RESET DATA
IS RECEIVED FROM THE FWD MSTR CALL RESET AND AFT MSTR CALL RESET SWITCHES ON THE FORWARD ATTENDANT PANEL.
THIS DATA IS SENT FROM THE CTD MICROPROCESSOR, TO THE SEB AND PSUD. THE ROW CALL LIGHT IS TURNED OFF, AND SEB
CALL CIRCUITS ARE RESET. THE TIME IT TAKES TO MONITOR ONE COLUMN OF SEBS IS CALLED A FRAME. EACH FRAME IS
TERMINATED WITH A SYNC PULSE. EACH SEAT GROUP RECEIVES GENERAL SIGNALS APPLICABLE TO ALL SEATS, AND
PARTICULAR SIGNALS RELATED TO ONE SEAT. TIMING IS THE SAME FOR 2 OR 3 SEAT GROUPS.
EACH COLUMN OF SEBS HAS A TERMINATION PLUG AT THE LAST SEAT GROUP. EACH COLUMN OF PSUDS HAS A TERMINATION
PLUG AT THE LAST PSU. THE FORWARD CTD OPERATES THE FWD LEFT MASTER CALL LIGHT FOR ATTENDANT CALLS FROM ITS
LEFT COLUMN OF SEBS AND FROM THE NUMBER 1 AND 2 PCU INPUTS OF THE CENTER SEB COLUMN. THE FORWARD CTD
OPERATES THE FWD RIGHT MASTER CALL LIGHT FOR CALLS FROM THE RIGHT COLUMN OF SEBS AND THE NUMBER 3 PCU
INPUTS OF THE CENTER SEB COLUMN. THE AFT CTD OPERATES THE MID AND AFT MASTER CALL LIGHTS IN THE SAME FASHION
OVER THE LEFT AND RIGHT AISLE WAYS. ALL ATTENDANT CALLS FROM THE CTDS ARE PROVIDED TO ELECTRONIC CHIME
MODULES, WHICH PRODUCE THE SINGLE HIGH CHIME SIGNALS (REF 23-42-00).
DESCRIPTION
EACH ZONE IS CONTROLLED BY ONE COLUMN TIMER DECODER (CTD). THE OPERATION OF A TYPICAL ONE IS GIVEN.
THE HEART OF THE SYSTEM IS THE CTD. IT CREATES THE SYSTEM TIMING AND INTERFACES WITH THE PSUDS AND SEBS TO
TRANSFER DATA FROM THE SEBS TO THE PSUDS.
IT ALSO INTERFACES WITH THE FORWARD ATTENDANTS PANEL. THE CTD WORKS AS AN ENCODER AND DECODER. IT ENCODES
COMMANDS FROM THE ATTENDANT PANEL TO THE PSUDS AND SEBS AND DECODES CODED COMMANDS FROM THE SEBS TO THE
ATTENDANT MASTER CALL LIGHTS AND THE CHIME UNITS.
WHEN A PASSENGER WISHES TO TURN ON HIS READING LIGHT, HE DOES SO BY ACTUATING THE READING LIGHT SWITCH ON
HIS PASSENGER CONTROL UNIT (PCU). THIS COMMAND ACTIVATES CIRCUITRY IN THE SEB THAT PUTS THE PROPER CODE ON
THE DATA STREAM TO THE CTD AT THE PROPER TIME ASSOCIATED WITH THAT PASSENGER SEAT GROUP.
IN OTHER WORDS, THE SEBS AND PSUDS ARE PAIRED TO A PARTICULAR SEAT GROUP AND ARE INTERFACED TO EACH OTHER
BY THE CTD.
THE SAME DATA FLOW IS TRUE FOR THE ATTENDANT CALL FUNCTION. WHEN THE PASSENGER ACTUATES THE CALL SWITCH, A
COMMAND IS SENT TO THE PSUD VIA THE CTD, FROM ITS ASSOCIATED PCU. IN THIS CASE, THE CTD ALSO COMMANDS THE
CHIME TO SOUND AND THE MASTER CALL LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE. WHEN A PSUD RECEIVES THE DATA FOR EITHER A READING
LIGHT OR ROW CALL LIGHT TO BE TURNED ON OR OF, IT DECODES THAT DATA AND ACTS ON IT.
BY ALTERNATIVELY CHANGING THE DIRECTION OF THE TIMING SIGNALS IT GENERATES, THE CTD ALLOWS FOR NORMAL
SYSTEM PERFORMANCE IN THE EVENT OF AN OPEN CONNECTION BETWEEN THE CTD AND EITHER SEBS OR PSUDS.
SUPPOSE THERE IS A WIRING BREAK BETWEEN TWO SEBS IN A COLUMN. BY FEEDING THE TIMING SIGNALS FIRST IN THE
FORWARD DIRECTION, AND THEN IN THE REVERSE DIRECTION, IT CAN BE SEEN THAT THE BREAK WILL APPEAR TO BE NON-
EXISTENT.
TO PRECLUDE SYSTEM FAULTS, SUCH AS FLASHING READING OR CALL LIGHTS, THE PSUD WILL NOT PROCESS A COMMAND
FROM THE PCU UNTIL IT SEES THAT COMMAND FOR THREE FRAMES IN SUCCESSION (TRIPLE COINCIDENCE). THIS TECHNIQUE
PREVENTS NOISE FROM BEING PROCESSED AS A COMMAND SINCE IT IS UNLIKELY A NOISE SPIKE WOULD APPEAR IN THE SAME
SEAT COMMAND SLOT THREE TIMES IN SUCCESSION.
OPERATION
ONE FRAME CONTAINS 31 SEAT GROUP TIMES PLUS A FRAME SYNC TIME. THE SYNC TIME IS REQUIRED TO OBTAIN AND
MAINTAIN PSS TIMING SYNCHRONIZATION. EACH SEAT GROUP TIME IS DIVIDED INTO FOUR BIT TIMES (DO, DL, D2, D3). SEAT
GROUPS ARE CAPABLE OF HANDLING UP TO FOUR SEATS WITHIN THE GROUP. NOTE THAT THERE IS A BIT CODE FOR READING
LIGHT FUNCTIONS FOR FOUR SEATS BUT AN ATTENDANT CALL FUNCTION FOR ONLY TWO SEATS. SEATS 1 AND 2 ATTENDANT
CALL FUNCTIONS ARE JUMPERED TOGETHER TO FORM THE “LEFT ATTENDANTS CALL” FUNCTIONS. SEATS 3 AND 4 FORM THE
“RIGHT ATTENDANT CALL” FUNCTION.
GENERAL
SYSTEM TESTS OF THE PES/PSS ARE PERFORMED USING THE:
PASS ENT AND SERVICE SYST SWITCH ON FWD ATTENDANT PANEL P21.
THE CTDS PERFORM TEST ROUTINES IN ALL TEST SWITCH POSITIONS OTHER THAN NORMAL. EACH OF THE SWITCH POSITIONS
TESTS A DIFFERENT PORTION OR FUNCTION OF THE PES/PSS SO THAT COMPONENT ISOLATION IS POSSIBLE.
THE FWD MSTR CALL RESET AND AFT MSTR CALL RESET LIGHTS ON P21 ARE USED AS STATUS INDICATORS FOR THE FWD AND
AFT PORTIONS OF THE PES/PSS BEING TESTED.
A SINGLE HI CHIME WILL SOUND AS THE TESTS ARE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED IN THE FIRST TWO SWITCH POSITIONS.
BEFORE USING THE PASS ENT AND SERVICE SYST TEST SWITCH, THE PASS ENT SYST PWR AND PASS SERV SYST PWR
SWITCHES SHOULD BE ON (SWITCH LIGHT ON).
THE READING SWITCH SHOULD BE IN THE NORMAL POSITION.
THE CTDS CHECK ALL THE PSS UNITS, PSS DATA LINES, AND PES SIGNAL TRANSMISSIONS FOR NORMAL OPERATION.
A CHIME SOUNDS TO INDICATE THE TEST IS COMPLETE.
SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION IS INDICATED BY THE FWD AND AFT MSTR CALL RESET LIGHTS COMING ON.
IF A FAULT IS INDICATED, THE TEST SHOULD BE CONTINUED TO ISOLATE THE FAULTY UNIT.
THE CTDS OPERATE THE ENTIRE SEAT READING LIGHTS, PASSENGER CALL LIGHTS, MASTER CALL LIGHTS, THE FWD MSTR CALL
RESET LIGHT AND THE AFT MSTR CALL RESET LIGHT. THE CHIME SOUNDS TO INDICATE TEST COMPLETE. INDIVIDUAL LIGHTS
OUT INDICATES FAULTY LAMPS (BULBS) OR PSUD. ENTIRE COLUMNS OF LIGHTS OUT INDICATE A FAULTY CTD.
THE CTDS CHECK THE PSUD DATA LINES AND UNITS IN THE FORWARD DIRECTION.
THE CTDS CHECK THE PSUD DATA LINES AND UNITS IN THE REVERSE DIRECTION.
• ALL PASSENGER CALL LIGHTS COME ON AT THE SAME TIME, THEN GO OUT SEQUENTIALLY.
• A SUCCESSFUL TEST IS INDICATED BY THE FWD AND AFT MSTR CALL RESET LIGHTS COMING ON.

• THE CHANNEL DISPLAY AND ATTENDANT CAD SWITCH/LIGHT ARE USED AS STATUS INDICATORS.
• NORMAL PCU OPERATION IS INDICATED WHEN THE ATTENDANT CALL SWITCH LIGHT IS ILLUMINATED AND THE CENTER
HORIZONTAL BAR OF THE RIGHT DIGIT IS DISPLAYED.
• A TRANSDUCER FAULT IS INDICATED WHEN THE RIGHT DIGIT DISPLAYS E.

THE PASS ENT AND SERVICE SYST SWITCH SHOULD BE SET TO NORMAL UPON THE COMPLETION OF SYSTEM TESTS. THE FWD
MSTR CALL RESET AND AFT MASTER CALL RESET SWITCHES SHOULD BE PRESSED TO RESET ALL THE MASTER CALL LIGHTS AND
PASSENGER CALL LIGHTS
TO DROP THE PSU, TWO LATCHES HAVE TO BE RELEASED, FIRST ONE, AND THEN THE OTHER. THIS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED
UTILIZING A SMALL SCREWDRIVER. THE DOOR IS THEN REMOVED BY LIFTING IT OFF THE HOOKS AND UNFASTENING THE
RECTANGULAR CONNECTOR FOR THE LIGHTS.
ONCE THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED THE PSUD IS READILY ACCESSIBLE.
MALFUNCTION REPORTED:
Double sideband (DSB) amplitude modulation requires a bandwidth of at least 7 kHz but this can
be reduced by transmitting only one of the two sidebands.
Note that either the upper sideband (USB) or the lower sideband (LSB) can be used because they
both contain the same modulating signal information. In addition, it is possible to reduce (or
‘suppress’) the carrier as this, in itself, does not convey any information.
The absence of the carrier means that less power is wasted in the transmitter which consequently
operates at significantly higher efficiency.
PURPOSE
THE SYSTEM IS USED FOR LONG RANGE AIR-TO -GROUND AND AIR-TO-AIR VOICE COMMUNICATIONS IN THE HIGH FREQUENCY
BAND, PRIMARILY FOR AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL.
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
THE SYSTEM USES DIRECT (GROUND) WAVE FOR SHORT DISTANCES.
LONG DISTANCE COMMUNICATION IS BASED ON REFRACTION IN AN IONIZED LAYER AND THE EARTH’S SURFACE. THIS “SKY
WAVE” TRANSMISSION CAN BE BY SINGLE OR MULTIPLE “BOUNCES”.
SKY WAVE PROPAGATION DISTANCES ARE DEPENDENT ON:
AREAS BETWEEN GROUND BOUNCES ARE “SKIPS” IN THE COMMUNICATION COVERAGE. THEREFORE, SUCCESSFUL OPERATION
MAY DEPEND UPON CORRECT FREQUENCY SELECTION FOR THE TIME OF DAY.

A TRANSCEIVER FOR EACH HF SYSTEM IS LOCATED ON THE SHELF E2-6 IN THE MAIN EQUIPMENT CENTER.
ANTENNA COUPLERS

DESCRIPTION
THE ANTENNA IS A SLOT TYPE ANTENNA AND APPROXIMATELY 8 FEET LONG.
ITS FREQUENCY RANGE IS APPROXIMATELY 2.8 TO 24 MHZ.
THE RADIATION PATTERN IS ESSENTIALLY OMNI-DIRECTIONAL.
THE ANTENNA IS PHYSICALLY AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE VERTICAL STABILIZER LEADING EDGE.
2. SYSTEM INTERFACES
MODE AND FREQUENCY SELECTION ARE MADE FROM THE CONTROL PANEL USING DIGITAL DATA FROM AN ARINC 429 DATA
BUS TO THE TRANSCEIVER.
SQUELCH THRESHOLD IS CONTROLLED FROM THE CONTROL PANEL USING A HARDWIRED CONNECTION BETWEEN THE
SQUELCH POTENTIOMETER ON THE CONTROL PANEL, AND THE TRANSCEIVER.
TRANSCEIVER AND COUPLER KEYING IS INITIATED BY PIT FROM THE INTERPHONE SYSTEM. THE KEY EVENT OUTPUT IS
PROVIDED TO THE FLIGHT DATA ACQUISITION UNIT AND THE PILOT’S CALL PANEL.
AMPLIFIED AUDIO AND UNSQUELCHED AM AUDIO IS PROVIDED TO THE FLIGHT INTER-PHONE AND THE SELCAL SYSTEMS
RESPECTIVELY.
THE CONTROL SIGNALS INTERFACE PROVIDE FOR RECHANNEL, TUNE-IN-PROGRESS, KEY INTERLOCK EXCITATION, AND KEY
INTERLOCK SIGNALS.
WHEN A SYSTEM IS KEYED, A DISABLE SIGNAL IS SENT FROM THE COUPLER OF THAT SYSTEM TO THE COUPLER OF THE
OPPOSITE SYSTEM TO PREVENT IT FROM BEING KEYED.
3. GENERAL OPERATION
FOR TRANSMISSION THE TRANSCEIVER RECEIVES AUDIO FROM THE INTERPHONE SYSTEM. THE MODULATED RADIO
FREQUENCY IS THEN ROUTED THROUGH THE COUPLER AND ON TO THE ANTENNA.
FOR RECEPTION, THE RECEIVED RADIO FREQUENCY SIGNAL IS BROUGHT FROM THE ANTENNA, THROUGH THE COUPLER TO
THE TRANSCEIVER, WHERE IT IS DEMODULATED. THE AUDIO IS THEN ROUTED TO THE INTERPHONE SYSTEM.
BOTH COUPLERS ARE CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO THE ANTENNA IN PARALLEL.

THE HF SYSTEM AUTOMATICALLY ENTERS THE RECEIVE / STANDBY MODE WHEN THE TUNING ELEMENTS REACH THE HOME

IN THIS MODE, THE HF SYSTEM RECEIVES ON THE SELECTED FREQUENCY.
TUNE
A PU TO THE HF SYSTEM CAUSES THE COUPLER TO POSITION THE TUNING ELEMENTS FOR THE FREQUENCY SELECTED ON THE
CONTROL PANEL.
DURING THE TUNE SEQUENCE THE TRANSCEIVER PROVIDES A 1 KHZ TONE AS HF RECEIVER AUDIO.
THE COUPLER MUST TUNE WITHIN 15 SECONDS.
IF IT DOES NOT, THE COUPLER WILL AUTOMATICALLY SEQUENCE TO THE FAULT MODE.
OPERATE
THE HF SYSTEM AUTOMATICALLY ENTERS THE OPERATE MODE WHEN TUNING IS COMPLETE. IN THIS MODE, THE HF RECEIVES
ON THE SELECTED FREQUENCY.
SETTING A NEW FREQUENCY (RE-CHANNEL) WILL CAUSE THE SYSTEM TO RETURN TO THE HOME MODE AND THEN RETUNE
ITSELF WITH THE NEXT PU.
TRANSMIT
WITH THE SYSTEM IN THE OPERATE MODE AND THE PU PRESSED THE HF SYSTEM ENTERS THE TRANSMIT MODE AND
MODULATED RF IS RADIATED VIA THE ANTENNA.
DURING TRANSMISSION THE OPPOSITE HF SYSTEM IS DISABLED VIA THE OPERATING SYSTEM’S ANTENNA COUPLER.
GENERAL
THE LEFT HF SYSTEM IS SHOWN. THE RIGHT SYSTEM OPERATES IN A SIMILAR MANNER.

THE ILLUSTRATION BELOW SHOWS:

AND K5 ENERGIZED, K6 DEENERGIZED) THE KEY LATCH CIRCUIT HOLDS THE PU DURING THIS PROCESS.
THE TUNING LOGIC IN THE COUPLER PROVIDES A GROUNDED OUTPUT TO DISABLE THE RIGHT HF COUPLER.
THE TUNE LOGIC ALSO PROVIDES A 28 V KEY INTERLOCK OUTPUT TO THE LEFT HF TRANSCEIVER IF:
• THERE IS A PU INPUT TO THE COUPLER • THE MODE CONTROL IS NOT IN THE HOME MODE
• THERE IS NO DISABLE FROM THE RIGHT COUPLER • THERE ARE NO COUPLER FAULTS

TRANSCEIVER SEQUENCE
THE TUNING LOGIC IN THE TRANSCEIVER ENERGIZES RELAY K1 AS A RESULT OF:
• A PU INPUT TO THE TRANSCEIVER
• NO TRANSCEIVER FAULTS
• A KEY INTERLOCK 28 V DC INPUT FROM THE LEFT COUPLER
DURING THE TUNE MODE THE TRANSLATOR I MODULATOR PROVIDES AN RF CARRIER AT THE SELECTED FREQUENCY.
THE OUTPUT POWER DURING THE TUNE PROCESS IS REDUCED TO 75 WATTS BY ENERGIZING THE RELAY 1<2.
A 1 KHZ TONE IS SENT TO THE ASPS.
COUPLER TUNING
THE TUNING ELEMENTS MOVE TO A POSITION WHICH PROVIDES THE BEST IMPEDANCE MATCHING.
THE TUNE MODE CONTINUES UNTIL THE IMPEDANCES ARE MATCHED TO A RATIO OF LESS THAN 1.3.
IF THIS IS NOT ACCOMPLISHED WITHIN 15 SECONDS, A COUPLER FAULT IS SET. THIS WILL END THE TUNE MODE.
KEY EVENT
A KEY EVENT IS PROVIDED TO DFDAU BY THE HF TRANSCEIVER AS LONG AS A PIT IS ACTIVE.
OPERATE
WHEN THE TUNE MODE IS SUCCESSFUL COMPLETED THE HF SYSTEM ENTERS THE OPERATE MODE.
RELAYS K1, K2, K4 AND K5 RELAX. NOW THE HF SYSTEM IS READY TO TRANSMIT WHEN THE NEXT PTT OCCURS.
COUPLER SEQUENCE
DURING TRANSMISSION RELAYS K4 AND K5 ARE ENERGIZED.
RELAY K2 AND K6 ARE DE-ENERGIZED.
THE TRANSMIT LOGIC IN THE COUPLER PROVIDES A GROUNDED OUTPUT TO DISABLE THE RIGHT COUPLER.
IT ALSO PROVIDES A 28 V DC KEY INTERLOCK TO THE LEFT HF TRANSCEIVER.
THIS OCCURS ONLY IF:

A COUPLER FAULT OCCURS AS A RESULT OF:

• SIGNAL FLOW
FOR TRANSMISSION, THE TRANSCEIVERS GENERATE THE CARRIER, AMPLITUDE MODULATES IT WITH AUDIO FROM THE FLIGHT
INTERPHONE SYSTEM’S AND TRANSMITS IT OVER THE ANTENNA. SYSTEM KEYING IS RECORDED BY THE FLIGHT DATA
RECORDER AND ALSO RESETS THE SELCAL DECODER.
WHEN NOT TRANSMITTING, THE RECEIVER AMPLIFIES THE INPUT I-F SIGNAL, CONVERTS IT TO A LOWER FREQUENCY, AND
DETECTS THE AUDIO MODULATION. IF THE SIGNAL IS STRONG ENOUGH, THE SQUELCH OPENS AND THE AUDIO IS ROUTED TO
THE FLIGHT INTERPHONE SYSTEM. THE DETECTED OUTPUT FROM ALL VHF SYSTEMS (PRIOR TO THE SQUELCH) IS SENT TO THE
SELCAL DECODER, WHICH ACTIVATES THE SELCAL ALERT LAMPS ON THE PILOTS’ CALL PANEL AND THE CHIMES.
OPERATIONAL SEQUENCE
ONLY ONE TYPICAL VHF SYSTEM IS SHOWN ON THE FUNCTIONAL DIAGRAM. IT CONSISTS OF THE FOLLOWING THREE
COMPONENTS.
• TRANSCEIVER
THE TRANSCEIVER PROVIDES SHORT RANGE AIR-TO-AIR AND AIR-TO GROUND VOICE COMMUNICATIONS IN THE 118 TO 136
MHZ RANGE.
• CONTROL PANEL
THIS PANEL PROVIDES REMOTE FREQUENCY SELECTION FOR THE TRANSCEIVER. TWO INDEPENDENT FREQUENCIES CAN BE
SELECTED AND READOUT ON LCD DISPLAYS. ONE OF THE TWO FREQUENCIES IS ROUTED TO THE TRANSCEIVER ON AN ARINC
429 DIGITAL DATA WORD.
• ANTENNA
EACH TRANSCEIVER IS CONNECTED, WITH A SO-OHM COAXIAL CABLE, TO A SO-OHM, OMNIDIRECTIONAL, VERTICALLY
POLARIZED BLADE ANTENNA.
OPERATIONAL FEATURES
• POWER
THE POWER REQUIREMENT IS 28 VOLTS DC. THIS IS SUPPLIED BY WAY OF THE VHF COMM CIRCUIT BREAKER ON THE P11
PANEL. POWER FROM THIS CIRCUIT BREAKER IS FED DIRECTLY TO THE TRANSCEIVER AND CONTROL PANEL. EACH OF THESE
LRUS HAS A POWER SUPPLY, WHICH PROVIDES DC VOLTAGES FOR INTERNAL OPERATION.
• CONTROL
TWO FREQUENCIES CAN BE SET INTO THE CONTROL PANEL, BUT ONLY THE ONE SELECTED BY THE TFR (FREQ SEL) SWITCH IS
TRANSMITTED TO THE TRANSCEIVER.
FREQUENCIES BETWEEN 118.000 AND 136.975 MHZ CAN BE SELECTED IN TWENTY FIVE KILOHERTZ INCREMENTS ON THE VHF
COMMUNICATIONS CONTROL PANEL. THE FREQUENCY SELECTION DATA ORIGINATES IN THE CONTROL PANEL FREQUENCY
SELECT SWITCHES AS PARALLEL BCD CODE, IS CONVERTED TO SERIAL BCD, FORMATTED INTO AN ARINC 429 WORD AND
TRANSMITTED TO THE TRANSCEIVER ON AN ARINC 429 DATA BUS.
VHF TRANSCEIVER
TRANSMITTER
TRANSMISSION IS INITIATED WITH THE PU (GROUND) SIGNAL FROM THE FLIGHT INTERPHONE SYSTEM OR THE FRONT PANEL
MICROPHONE JACK. THE PU SIGNAL IS ROUTED DIRECTLY TO THE MICROPROCESSOR SYSTEM. IT IS ALSO ROUTED OUT OF THE
TRANSCEIVER AS THE KEY EVENT SIGNAL. THIS SIGNAL PROVIDES THE SELCAL RESET AND THE KEY-EVENT TIME RECORDING
ON THE FLIGHT DATA RECORDER (DFDAU).
THE MICROPROCESSOR, UPON RECEIVING PU, INITIATES THE TRANSMIT KEY (XMIT KEY LINE) DISCRETE. THIS SIGNAL
CHANGES THE STATE OF THE T/R SWITCH, WHICH CONNECTS THE OUTPUT OF THE TRANSMITTER (XMIT RE) FROM THE DIREC-
TIONAL COUPLER TO THE ANTENNA. IT ALSO KEYS TILE TRANSMITTER STAGES
AUDIO FROM THE FLIGHT INTERPHONE SYSTEM OR FRONT PANEL JACK IS ROUTED THROUGH AUDIO STAGES FOR
AMPLIFICATION, LINEARIZATION, AND AUTOMATIC VOLUME CONTROL (COMPRESSION), AND APPLIED TO THE MODULATOR.
RADIO FREQUENCY ENERGY FROM THE FREQUENCY SYNTHESIZER (WHICH RECEIVES BCD FREQUENCY COMMANDS FROM THE
MICROPROCESSOR), IS ALSO FED TO THE MODULATOR. THE MODULATOR THEN SUPPLIES A LOW-LEVEL, AMPLITUDE-MODU-
LATED RF SIGNAL TO THE II POWER AMPLIFIER STAGES.
AFTER THE RI AMPLIFICATION STAGES 1 WHICH RAISE THE II POWER TO A TYPICAL 30 WATTS, THE RF ENERGY IS FED
THROUGH THE DIRECTIONAL COUPLER. THE OUTPUT OF THE DIRECTIONAL COUPLER IS FED TO THE ANTENNA, BY WAY OF THE
HR SWITCH, FOR RADIATION.
THE DIRECTIONAL COUPLER SAMPLES FORWARD POWER AND REFLECTED POWER AND PROVIDES AN OUTPUT OF EACH FOR THE
FORWARD/REFLECTED POWER INDICATOR. THE FORWARD POWER IS ALSO FED TO A SIDE TONE AMPLIFIER AND ON TO THE
RECEIVER’S AUDIO AMPLIFIER.
WHEN THE TRANSMITTER 15 NOT KEYED (NO PIT SIGNAL PRESENT), ANY II SIGNAL, WHICH MAY BE RECEIVED AT THE
ANTENNA, WILL BE ROUTED THROUGH THE NORMALLY CLOSED CONTACTS OF T/R SWITCH SI TO THE RF STAGES. AFTER
FILTERING, AMPLIFICATION AND GAIN CONTROL, THE RF SIGNAL IS SENT TO THE FIRST MIXER.
IN THE MIXER CIRCUIT THE RF SIGNAL IS MIXED WITH THE FIRST INJECTION SIGNAL FROM THE FREQUENCY SYNTHESIZER TO
PRODUCE THE FIRST INTERMEDIATE FREQUENCY (IT) SIGNAL. THIS SIGNAL IS MIXED WITH THE SECOND INJECTION
FREQUENCY TO PRODUCE THE SECOND IF SIGNAL. AFTER AMPLIFICATION AND GAIN CONTROL THE SIGNAL 15 SENT TO THE
DETECTOR CIRCUIT
THE DETECTOR REMOVES THE CARRIER FREQUENCY AND SENDS THE SIGNAL TO THE RECEIVER AUDIO CIRCUITS. ONE OUTPUT
IS SENT TO THE DATA AMPLIFIER. THE OUTPUT OF THIS AMPLIFIER PROVIDES UNSQUELCHED AUDIO FOR THE SELCAL DECOD-
ER. THE DETECTED AUDIO IS ALSO ROUTED TO THE RECEIVER AUDIO FREQUENCY (AT) SECTIONS WHICH INCLUDE THE AUDIO
COMPRESSOR AND AUTOMATIC VOLUME CONTROL CIRCUITS.
THE RECEIVER OUTPUT IS THEN FED TO THE VOICE AMPLIFIER CIRCUITS THROUGH THE SQUELCH GATE. THE SQUELCH GATE IS
CONTROLLED BY THE RECEIVER SQUELCH CONTROL CIRCUIT, WHICH ONLY ALLOWS AUDIO OUTPUT WHEN IT IS ABOVE
SQUELCH THRESHOLD. THE SQUELCH GATE ALLOWS THE MICROPROCESSOR OR THE SQUELCH DISABLE TO OVERRIDE THE
SQUELCH CIRCUIT.
THE SQUELCH MAY BE OVERRIDDEN BY PRESSING THE SQL/LAMP TEST SWITCH ON THE TRANSCEIVER’S FRONT PANEL WHICH
PROVIDES A GROUND TO THE SQUELCH CONTROL CIRCUITS. IF THE COM TEST SWITCH ON THE CONTROL PANEL IS PRESSED,
THE COMMAND IS ENCODED ON THE ARINC 429 DIGITAL DATA WORD AND TRANSMITTED TO THE MICROPROCESSOR IN THE
TRANSCEIVER. THE MICROPROCESSOR THEN COMMANDS THE SQUELCH CONTROL CIRCUITS TO DISABLE SQUELCH. IN EITHER
CASE, BACKGROUND NOISE IS THEN HEARD IN THE HEADSET AS A RECEIVER CONFIDENCE TEST.
TEST FEATURES
SELF-TEST SEQUENCE (PRESS TEST)
THE TRANSCEIVER MICROPROCESSOR CONTROLS A TESTING PROCEDURE, WHICH CAUSES SIMULTANEOUS OPERATION OF THE
RECEIVER AND TRANSMITTER ON THE TEST FREQUENCY (1 28.775 MHZ). THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS OCCUR DURING THE TEST
MODE.
IF THE TUNING DATA IS NOT VALID, THE RED LED ANNUNCIATOR ON THE FRONT PANEL IS ILLUMINATED FOR ABOUT FOUR
SECONDS.
THE TRANSCEIVER IS AUTOMATICALLY KEYED TO TRANSMIT ON 128.775 MHZ FOR ABOUT 100 MILLISECONDS. A SMALL
PORTION OF THE TRANSMITTED SIGNAL IS MONITORED BY THE RECEIVER, WHICH IS TUNED TO THE SAME FREQUENCY. A
TRANSMIT SELF-TEST TONE (2KHZ) IS SENT TO THE AUDIO INPUT SECTION BY THE MICROPROCESSOR. THE TEST TONE IS
THEN MONITORED AT THE RECEIVER OUTPUT. THIS IS FED BACK TO THE MICROPROCESSOR, WHICH THEN MAKES A VALIDITY
CHECK BASED ON OUTPUT AMPLITUDE AND FREQUENCY.
IF THE TRANSCEIVER SELF-TEST AUDIO PASSES THE MICROPROCESSOR’S VALIDITY TESTS, A GREEN LED ON THE FRONT PANEL
ILLUMINATES FOR ABOUT FOUR SECONDS.
DURING SELF-TEST, THE FORWARD AND REFLECTED POWER IS MEASURED BY THE DIRECTIONAL COUPLER. THE
MICROPROCESSOR CALCULATES VSWR AND DISPLAYS THIS ON THE LED DISPLAY ON THE FRONT PANEL.
THE TRANSCEIVER INCLUDES A FORWARD AND REFLECTED POWER MEASURING CAPABILITY FOR TESTING THE ANTENNA
SYSTEM INTEGRITY. THE RFL/OFF/FWD SWITCH ON THE FRONT PANEL IS SET TO THE FWD POSITION. SWITCH S2,
CONTROLLED BY THE MICROPROCESSOR, DIRECTS FORWARD POWER THROUGH AN ANALOG TO DIGITAL CONVERTER. THE
DIGITAL CODED FORWARD POWER IS SENT TO THE MICROPROCESSOR. THE MICROPROCESSOR SENDS FORWARD POWER,
THROUGH A DISPLAY DRIVER, TO THE LED DISPLAY ON THE FRONT PANEL. THIS POWER SHOULD BE A MINIMUM OF 25 WATTS,
BUT 30 WATTS IS TYPICAL.
THE RFL/OFF/FWD SWITCH IS THEN SET TO THE RFL POSITION. THE REFLECTED POWER IS THEN INDICATED ON THE LCD
DISPLAY IN THE SAME WAY. A REFLECTED POWER LEVEL GREATER THAN ONE-FOURTH THE FORWARD POWER INDICATES A
VSWR OF GREATER THAN 2:1. THIS INDICATES A PROBLEM IN THE ANTENNA OR TRANSMISSION LINE.
SQUELCH/LAMP TEST
THE TRANSCEIVER FRONT PANEL ALSO CONTAINS A SQUELCH DISABLE/LED TEST SWITCH. PRESSING THIS SWITCH PLACES A
GROUND ON THE LEDS ILLUMINATING THEM AND IT CAUSES THE MICROPROCESSOR TO COMMAND 88 TO BE SHOWN IN THE
LCD. IT ALSO CAUSES SQUELCH TO BE DISABLED, BRINGING UP RECEIVER BACKGROUND NOISE TO PROVIDE A RECEIVER
CONFIDENCE CHECK.
FUNCTIONAL TEST
• SQUELCH/LAMP TEST
PRESSING THE SQL/LAMP TEST SWITCH BREAKS THE RECEIVER SQUELCH (ENABLING THE OPERATOR TO HEAR RECEIVER
BACKGROUND NOISE) AND ILLUMINATES THE CONTROL INPUT FAIL AND LRU PASS LEDS AS LONG AS THE SWITCH IS HELD DE-
PRESSED. IT ALSO CAUSES THE LCDS TO DISPLAY THE NUMBER 88.
• LRU TEST
MOMENTARILY DEPRESSING THE TEST SWITCH CAUSES THE MICROPROCESSOR TO CONDUCT A TRANSMITTER AND RECEIVER
END-TO-END TEST, CONSISTING OF A 100 MSEC TRANSMISSION ON A TEST FREQUENCY, MODULATED AT 2 KHZ. FORWARD AND
REFLECTED POWER IS MONITORED AND VSWR COMPUTED AND DISPLAYED (NORMAL VSWR VALUE IS APPROXIMATELY 2.0). THE
TRANSMITTED RF IS ATTENUATED AND INJECTED INTO THE RECEIVER WHICH IS TUNED TO THE TEST FREQUENCY BY A
SPECIAL LOCAL OSCILLATOR. IF THE TRANSMIT FREQUENCY IS CORRECT, MODULATION ADEQUATE, AND THE RECEIVER IS
OPERATING PROPERLY, THE AUDIO IS HEARD AT THE RECEIVER OUTPUT. IF ALL MONITORED PARAMETERS INDICATE PROPER
OPERATION OF THE TRANSCEIVER, THE LRU PASS INDICATOR ILLUMINATES FOR APPROXIMATELY FOUR SECONDS. FREQUENCY
SELECTION DATA ON THE ACTIVE PORT IS ALSO MONITORED. IMPROPER DATA WORDS WILL RESULT IN. THE CONTROL INPUT
FAIL INDICATOR ILLUMINATING. IF THE TEST SWITCH IS HELD IN, THE TEST IS REPEATED UNTIL THE SWITCH IS RELEASED.
OPERATIONAL CHECKOUT
A TEST TRANSMISSION CAN ALSO BE MADE FROM THE COCKPIT OR FROM THE TRANSCEIVER FRONT PANEL IF ANOTHER

Each transmitted code comprises two consecutive tone pulses, with each pulse
containing two simultaneously transmitted tones.
The pulses are of 1 second duration separated by an interval of about 0.2 seconds.
To ensure proper operation of the SELCAL decoder, the frequency of the transmitted
tones must be held to an accuracy of better than ± 0.15%.
SELCAL codes are uniquely allocated to particular aircraft by Air Traffic Control (ATC).
SELCAL code is ‘AM-BM’ and only the aircraft with this code would then be alerted
to the need to respond to an incoming message.
PURPOSE
THE SELCAL SYSTEM PROVIDES NOTIFICATION TO THE FLIGHT CREW WHEN A GROUND STATION DESIRES CONTACT ON ONE OF
THE COMMUNICATION TRANSCEIVERS. SELCAL REDUCES PILOT DIVERSIONS AND WORKLOAD BY ELIMINATING THE NEED FOR
CONTINUOUS MONITORING OF COMMUNICATIONS FREQUENCIES.

OPERATION
A GROUND STATION CALLS A PARTICULAR AIRPLANE BY TRANSMITTING A SET OF FOUR AUDIO TONES OVER A
COMMUNICATIONS TRANSCEIVER.
THE SELCAL DECODER RECEIVES THE AUDIO FROM THE PARTICULAR TRANSCEIVER AND COMPARES THE TONES TO AN
ASSIGNED CODE.
WHEN THE TONES AND THE CODE ARE THE SAME, A CHIME SOUNDS AND A CALL LIGHT ON THE PILOTS’ CALL PANEL COMES ON,

THE DECODER MONITORS AUDIO FROM THE VHF AND HF TRANSCEIVERS. WHEN THE RECEIVED CODE MATCHES THE CODE
PROGRAMMED BY THE CODING RECEPTACLE, THE DECODER RECOGNIZES IT AS A CALL TO THAT AIRPLANE. THE DECODER THEN

TEST PROVISION
PROVISION IS MADE TO INITIATE A SELF-TEST FROM A REMOTE SWITCH. UPON APPLICATION OF A GROUND TO THE TEST
INPUT, THE TEST CIRCUITRY GENERATES BURST TEST PULSES FOR ALL CHANNELS. AS RESULT, ALL SELCAL LIGHTS AND THE
CHIME COMES ON AND MUST BE RESET FOR EACH CHANNEL AS IN NORMAL OPERATION.
LOGBOOK ENTRY:
PURPOSE
THE PURPOSE OF THE SELCAL SYSTEM IS TO TELL THE FLIGHT CREW WHEN A GROUND STATION WANTS TO CONTACT THEM ON
A RADIO. THE SYSTEM HELPS REDUCE PILOT WORKLOAD AND DISTRACTIONS BY MAKING CONTINUOUS MONITORING OF A
RADIO UNNECESSARY.
OPERATION
THE GROUND STATION CALLS A CERTAIN AIRPLANE BY TRANSMITTING, ON A ASSIGNED FREQUENCY, AN AMPLITUDE-
MODULATED SET OF FOUR AUDIO TONES THAT AGREE WITH THE AIRPLANE’S ASSIGNED SELCAL CODE. THE AIRPLANE’S RADIO
TRANSCEIVER (VHF OR HF) TUNED TO THE ASSIGNED FREQUENCY WILL RECEIVE AND DEMODULATE THE SELCAL SIGNAL. THE
DEMODULATED SIGNAL IS SENT TO THE SELCAL DECODER, WHICH ONLY REACTS TO ITS ASSIGNED TONE COMBINATION. WHEN
THE ASSIGNED CODE IS RECOGNIZED, THE DECODER SOUNDS THE WARNING ELECTRONICS UNIT CHIME AND ILLUMINATES THE
PILOT’S CALL PANEL LAMP ASSOCIATED WITH THE RADIO RECEIVING THE SIGNALS. THE DECODER AND PILOT’S CALL PANEL
LAMP ARE MANUALLY RESET. THE FLIGHT CREW THEN SELECTS THE INDICATED RADIO TO CONTACT THE GROUND STATION.

THE SELCAL SYSTEM CONSISTS OF A SINGLE 5-CHANNEL DECODER, A SHORTING RECEPTACLE WIRED FOR THE CODE ASSIGNED
TO THAT AIRPLANE, AND LAMPS ON THE PILOT’S CALL PANEL.
FUNCTIONAL INTERFACES
EACH VHF AND HF COMMUNICATIONS TRANSCEIVER USED FOR VOICE COMMUNICATIONS SENDS DETECTED UNSQUELCHED
AUDIO TO THE DECODER.
THE SELCAL SHORTING RECEPTACLE PROVIDES A 4-BIT CODE, UNIQUE FOR EACH AIRPLANE, TO THE DECODER FOR EACH
LETTER OF THE ASSIGNED CODE.
THE DECODER TURNS ON THE PILOT’S CALL PANEL SELCAL LAMP CORRESPONDING TO THE TRANSCEIVER THAT RECEIVED THE
TONES. IT ALSO SENDS A CHIME SIGNAL TO THE WARNING ELECTRONICS UNIT CHIME CIRCUIT.
THE DECODER RESET COMES FROM THE PILOT’S CALL PANEL. THE RESET IS INITIATED EITHER BY PRESSING THE LAMP/SWITCH
ON THE PILOTS CALL PANEL, OR BY KEYING THE ASSOCIATED TRANSCEIVER.
FLIGHT COMPARTMENT
• ONE DC CIRCUIT BREAKER FOR THE DECODER ON THE P11 CIRCUIT BREAKER PANEL ASSEMBLY.
• ONE LAMP/SWITCH ON THE PILOT CALL PANEL (P5) FOR EACH TRANSCEIVER CONNECTED TO THE SELCAL DECODER.
PURPOSE
THE PILOT’S CALL PANEL PROVIDES THE SWITCH/LIGHT COMBINATIONS TO MAKE CALLS FROM THE FLIGHT COMPARTMENT OR
ALERT THE CREW OF INCOMING CALLS.
SELCAL LIGHT/SWITCHES
THE SELCAL LIGHT/SWITCHES NOTIFY THE FLIGHT CREW OF A GROUND-TO-AIR CALL RECEIVED BY VHF AND HF
COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS. WHEN THE ILLUMINATED LIGHT’ SWITCH IS PRESSED, OR THE ASSOCIATED RADIO’S PRESS-TO-
TALK MIC SWITCH IS PRESSED, THE SELCAL DECODER RESETS AND TURNS OFF THE LIGHT.
PURPOSE
THE DECODER MONITORS UNSQUELCHED AUDIO FROM THE VHF COMMUNICATION AND HF COMMUNICATION RECEIVERS,
RECOGNIZES RECEIPT OF THE TONE SET ASSIGNED TO THE AIRPLANE IT IS INSTALLED IN, AND GENERATES CALL ALERT
SIGNALS.

ESTABLISHES FOUR FOUR-BIT CODES CORRESPONDING TO ONE OF THE 16 AUDIO TONES USED IN SELCAL CALLING.
CONTROL
POWER AND AUDIO INPUTS ARE WIRED DIRECTLY TO THE DECODER. THEREFORE, THE ONLY OPERATOR CONTROL REQUIRED
IS FOR THE RESET FUNCTION. THE SYSTEM IS RESET BY EITHER DEPRESSING THE SELCAL LAMP CORRESPONDING TO THE
TRANSCEIVER THAT RECEIVED THE CALL SIGNAL OR BY KEYING THAT TRANSCEIVER.
SIGNAL FLOW
THE DECODER RECEIVES AUDIO DIRECTLY FROM THE COMMUNICATION TRANSCEIVERS. WHEN THE RECEIVED CODE MATCHES
THE CODE SET BY THE SHORTING RECEPTACLE, THE DECODER RECOGNIZES IT AS A CALL TO THAT AIRPLANE. THE DECODER
GENERATES A CALL ALERT SIGNAL TO THE PILOT CALL PANEL SELCAL LAMP CORRESPONDING TO THE TRANSCEIVER THAT
RECEIVED THE CALL SIGNAL. THE DECODER ALSO ISSUES A CALL SIGNAL TO EICAS FOR MESSAGE GENERATION, WHICH IN
TURN SENDS A SIGNAL TO THE WARNING ELECTRONICS UNIT TO ACTUATE THE PILOT’S CHIME. AN ACTIVATED CHANNEL CAN
BE RESET BY A RESET SIGNAL FROM THE PILOT CALL PANEL. THIS RESET SIGNAL IS INITIATED EITHER BY THE

THE ONLY OPERATIONAL CONTROL IS THE RESET FUNCTION. ONCE A CHANNEL HAS BEEN ACTIVATED, IT MUST BE RESET
BEFORE IT CAN DETECT ANOTHER CALL. A CHANNEL CAN BE RESET EITHER BY DEPRESSING THE LAMP/SWITCH OR BY KEYING

THE UNIT FEATURES AN 8 KBYTE MESSAGE BUFFER.

THE PRINTER USES HIGH-CONTRAST, WHITE THERMAL SENSITIVE PAPER. IT IS FED BY THE STEPPING MOTOR FROM A 90-100

• DISENGAGE THE LEFT SIDE OF THE SPINDLE BY PUSHING THE PAPER SPOOL TO THE RIGHT. ROTATE THE SPINDLE UP
AND RIGHT.
• REMOVE THE CARDBOARD TUBE BY PULLING IT STRAIGHT OFF THE SPINDLE. INSTALL A NEW ROLL OF PAPER ON THE
SPINDLE.
THE END OF THE PAPER SHOULD COME OFF THE TOP OF THE ROLL TOWARD THE DRAG BAR WHEN THE SPINDLE IS

VOLTS DC FROM HOT BATTERY BUS SUPPLIES POWER FOR GMT CLOCK, AND ACARS MANAGEMENT UNIT FRONT PANEL
FAILURE INDICATORS. THE MANAGEMENT UNIT PROVIDES THE CONTROL UNIT WITH REGULATED DC POWER. THESE
VOLTAGES ARE USED BY THE CONTROL UNIT FOR LOGIC LEVELS AND DISPLAY AND ANNUNCIATOR PANELS.
MEMORY MODULE
THE MEMORY IS CONFIGURED IN 8—BIT BYTES. THE MEMORY MODULE CONTAINS 64K BYTES OF EPROM, 32K BYTES OF RAM,
AND 32K BYTES OF ROM. THE EPROM CONTAINS THE PRE-PROGRAMMED OPERATING SEQUENCE FOR THE CPU.
THE RAM PROVIDES TEMPORARY STORAGE FOR THE DATA ACQUIRED DURING SYSTEM
OPERATION, AND THE ROM PROVIDES DATA THAT IS UNIQUE TO A PARTICULAR SYSTEM.
MODEM MODULE
THE MODEM MODULE IS A BI-DIRECTIONAL INTERFACE MODULE WHICH CONTROLS, FORMATS, AND MODULATES DOWNLINK
MESSAGES. IT ALSO DEMODULATES UPLINK MESSAGES AND FORMATS THEM INTO THE ADDRESS, CONTROL, AND DATA
FORMATS REQUIRED BY THE CPU.
MU INTERFACES
AIRPLANE REGISTRATION/ID PROGRAM PINS
PROGRAM PINS ARE AVAILABLE TO ENCODE THE 9—CHARACTER AIRPLANE REGISTRATION AND AIRLINE ALPHA CODE WHICH
FORMS THE ADDRESS FOR EACH AIRPLANE. THE FIRST SEVEN CHARACTERS MAKEUP THE REGISTRATION MARK OF THE
AIRPLANE AND THE FINAL TWO CHARACTERS ARE THE AIRLINE ALPHA ID CODE. THE CODE IS SUPPLIED TO THE CPU IN ISO 5,
WHICH HAS EIGHT BITS FOR EACH CHARACTER. SIX BITS ARE WIRED (CONNECTIONS = LOGIC —, NO CONNECTION = LOGIC
1), WITH THE SEVENTH BIT BEING THE COMPLEMENT OF THE SIXTH, AND THE EIGHTH BIT USED AS A PARITY BIT.
THE AIR/GROUND RELAY INPUTS A LOGIC ZERO SIGNAL WHEN THE AIRPLANE IS ON THE GROUND AND THE PARKING BRAKE
RELAY INPUTS A LOGIC ZERO WHEN THE PARKING-BRAKE IS ENGAGED. EACH DOOR WHICH IS CLOSED AND LOCKED ALSO
INPUTS A LOGIC ZERO TO THE MU.
VHF TRANSCEIVER
THE SEVEN—CHARACTER (42 BIT) AIRPLANE REGISTRATION NUMBER AND TWO—CHARACTER (12 BIT) AIRPLANE
IDENTIFICATION NUMBER ARE HARDWIRED TO THE MU. THEY ARE USED BY THE MU TO IDENTIFY UPLINKED MESSAGES
ADDRESSED TO IT VIA THE C— VHF AND TO PROVIDE IDENTIFICATION FOR DOWN—LINKED (VIA C—VHF) MESSAGES
SELECTION OF THE SOURCE OF TRANSCEIVER TUNING DATA IS DONE BY USE OF A PORT— SELECT DISCRETE FROM THE ACARS
MANAGEMENT UNIT WHICH SELECTS WHICH TUNING DATA INPUT PORT THE TRANSCEIVER WILL REACT TO. TUNING IS
ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH AN ARINC 429 (LABEL 030) BUS TO THE TRANSCEIVER FREQUENCY SELECT PORT A.
KEYING OF THE TRANSCEIVER IN THE DATA MODE IS DONE BY GROUNDING A DATA KEY LINE.
DATA IS SUPPLIED TO THE TRANSCEIVER FROM THE MODEM MODULE IN THE FORM OF A DIFFERENTIALLY—ENCODED 1200 HZ /
2400 HZ TONE. THE DATA TONE IS SUPPLIED DIRECTLY TO THE TRANSCEIVER MODULATOR FOR TRANSMISSION.
DATA FROM THE TRANSCEIVER IS IN THE SAME FORM AS OUTGOING DATA; IT IS DEMODULATED AND TRANSFERRED TO THE
CPU.
MU - HMCDU INTERFACE
DATA TO THE MULTIPURPOSE DISPLAY AND CONTROL UNIT IS ARINC 429 DATA. DATA TO THE L—MCDU IS ALSO SENT TO THE
MULTIPURPOSE PRINTER.
DATA INPUT/OUTPUT
DATA IS RECEIVED BY THE MANAGEMENT UNIT FROM THE C—VHF RECEIVER OR DFDAU AND TRANSMITTED TO THE CONTROL
UNIT. THE CONTROL UNIT SENDS THE DATA TO THE CPU FOR DISPLAY OR PRINTING.
BITE
BITE IS DESIGNED TO DETERMINE IF A FAILURE IS IN THE MANAGEMENT UNIT OR THE CONTROL UNIT AND TO INDICATE SUCH
FAILURE ON THE CONTROL UNIT. BITE, TESTS THE FOLLOWING:
• ALL INPUT/OUTPUT INTERFACES AND ASSOCIATED CIRCUITS
• MODEM MODULE (DEMODULATOR/MODULATOR)
• CENTRAL MICROPROCESSOR

THE ACARS MU FAIL (RED) LED ILLUMINATES AS PART OF THE TEST SEQUENCE AND WHEN THE MU IS IN A FAIL MODE.
GENERAL
THE. VOICE RECORDER SYSTEM PRESERVES A CONTINUING RECORD OF THE LATEST 30 MINUTES OF FLIGHT CREW
COMMUNICATIONS AND CONVERSATIONS. THE FOUR-CHANNEL VOICE RECORDER RECEIVES INPUTS FROM THE AUDIO
SELECTOR PANELS FOR THE CAPTAIN, THE FIRST OFFICER, AND THE FIRST OBSERVER, AND FROM AN AREA MICROPHONE IN
THE FLIGHT COMPARTMENT.
THE VOICE RECORDER SYSTEM CONSISTS OF A RECORDER LOCATED IN THE AFT PASSENGER CABIN CEILING AND A CONTROL
PANEL WITH AN AREA MICROPHONE LOCATED ON OVERHEAD PANEL P5.
115 VAC POWER IS SUPPLIED TO THE SYSTEM FROM THE RIGHT AC BUS. THE VOICE RECORDER CIRCUIT BREAKER, LOCATED
ON OVERHEAD PANEL P11, CONTROLS POWER TO THE SYSTEM.
VOICE RECORDER
THE VOICE RECORDER UNIT IS INSTALLED IN THE VOICE AND FLIGHT RECORDER RACK ASSEMBLY (E7) OVER THE PASSENGER
COMPARTMENT CEILING, LEFT SIDE, AFT OF THE REAR ENTRY DOOR.
ACCESS IS THROUGH A DROP-DOWN CEILING PANEL.
CIRCUIT BREAKER
A SINGLE AC BREAKER IS LOCATED ON THE P11 PANEL.
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
THE LATEST 30 MINUTES OF FLIGHT COMPARTMENT COMMUNICATIONS ARE RECORDED BY THE VOICE RECORDER. CHANNELS 1
THRU 3 RECORD AUDIO FROM THE FIRST OBSERVER’S, THE FIRST OFFICER’S, AND THE CAPTAIN’S AUDIO SELECTOR PANELS,
RESPECTIVELY. CHANNEL 4 RECORDS AUDIO PICKED UP BY THE AREA MICROPHONE ON THE VOICE RECORDER CONTROL PANEL
(P5).
THE VOICE RECORDER IS POWERED DIRECTLY FROM THE 115 VAC RIGHT BUS. THE POWER SUPPLY IN THE VOICE RECORDER
SUPPLIES 115 AND 30 VDC USED WITHIN THE RECORDER AND -18 VDC USED IN THE VOICE RECORDER CONTROL PANEL.
THE FOUR TRACK ENDLESS TAPE RUNS AT 1 7/8 IPS ON A SINGLE-SIDED REEL. THE 1/4-INCH WIDE TAPE IS 308 FEET LONG
PROVIDING 30 MINUTES OF RECORDING TIME. THE TAPE COMES OFF THE REEL IN A CONTINUOUS LOOP, FIRST PASSING THE
ERASE HEAD, THEN THE FOUR RECORD HEADS, THEN THE PLAY HEAD AND THEN BACK ONTO THE REEL.
THE BIAS GENERATOR 65 KHZ SIGNAL IS APPLIED TO THE ERASE HEAD TO ERASE THE TAPE. THE 65 KHZ ALSO SHIFTS THE
AUDIO BAND UPWARDS TO IMPROVE THE LINEARITY OF THE RECORD AMPLIFIERS. THE 65 KHZ IS ALSO MIXED AND REMOVED
IN THE MONITOR AMPLIFIER.
UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, PUSHING THE ERASE SWITCH ON THE CONTROL PANEL WILL CAUSE THE ENTIRE TAPE TO BE
ERASED. BULK ERASURE REQUIRES THAT THE ERASE SWITCH BE PUSHED A MINIMUM OF TWO SECONDS WHEN THE AIRPLANE
IS ON THE GROUND WITH THE PARKING BRAKE SET. WHEN THE ERASE SWITCH IS RELEASED AFTER BEING PUSHED FOR TWO
SECONDS, A 115 VAC, 400 HZ IS APPLIED TO THE BULK ERASE COIL BETWEEN 5 AND 12 SECONDS. WHILE THE ERASURE
OCCURS, A 400 HZ TONE CAN BE MONITORED AT THE HEADSET JACK.
SELF TEST
THE PLAY HEAD AND MONITOR AMPLIFIER ARE USED TO MONITOR TEST SIGNALS RECORDED ON ALL TRACKS OF THE TAPE.
AUDIO OUTPUTS ARE MONITORED AT THE HEADSET JACK ON THE CONTROL PANEL AND THE JACK ON THE RECORDER FRONT
PANEL. A 600 HZ DETECTOR MONITORS THE TEST SIGNALS ON EACH TRACK AND SENDS +30 VDC PULSES TO CAUSE THE
MONITOR METER TO DEFLECT ON THE CONTROL PANEL.
WHEN THE TEST SWITCH ON THE CONTROL PANEL IS PUSHED, A 600 HZ TEST TONE IS GENERATED IN THE VOICE RECORDER
UNIT. A RING COUNTER SEQUENTIALLY SWITCHES THE 600 HZ TEST TONE FOR 0.8 SECONDS TO EACH OF THE FOUR RECORD
AMPLIFIERS. A GOOD TEST WILL CAUSE THE TEST METER NEEDLE TO SWING INTO THE GREEN BAND ACCOMPANIED BY A 600
HZ TONE FROM THE HEADSET JACK.
THE AREA MICROPHONE AND AUDIO SELECTOR PANELS (ASP) CAN BE USED TO TEST THE VOICE RECORDER SYSTEM. WITH THE
AREA MICROPHONE COVERED, A VOICE INPUT TO EACH AUDIO SELECTOR PANEL CAN BE MONITORED AT THE HEADPHONE JACK
ON THE RECORDER CONTROL PANEL. WITH ALL AUDIO INPUTS REMOVED FROM THE ASP, INPUTS TO THE AREA MICROPHONE
ON THE CONTROL PANEL CAN BE MONITORED IN THE SAME FASHION.
PURPOSE
THE UNDERWATER LOCATING BEACON (ULB) IS AN ULTRASONIC BEACON.
IT MAKES A WATER-SUBMERGED RECORDER EASIER TO FIND.
CHARACTERISTICS
THE ULB IS A SELF-CONTAINED UNIT THAT IS 1.3 INCH IN DIAMETER, 4 INCHES IN LENGTH
AND WEIGHS LESS THEN 7 OUNCES.
THE ULB IS POWERED BY A 9.6 VOLT BATTERY.
OPERATION
THE ULB ACTIVATES WHEN IT IS SUBMERGED IN WATER. IT WILL OPERATE TO MAXIMUM DEPTH OF 20,000 FEET. IT HAS A
MAXIMUM DETECTION RANGE OF APPROXIMATELY 10,000 FEET. ITS OPERATING LIFE IS 30 DAYS.
THE ULB TRANSMITS AN ACOUSTIC PULSE OF 37.5 KHZ AT A RATE OF ONE PULS PER SECOND.
