AB Engineering and Problem Solving

I. Introduction

*Write a short introduction about the importance of problem-

solving/engineering method in engineering.

II. Learning Outcomes

At the end of this exercise, the students will be able to:

1. Apply Engineering Method in solving a certain problem.

III. Materials and Methods

A certain problem was given and the student is asked to establish an

organized detailed set of instructions in solving the said problem. The
problem is the following:

Replacing the tire and inner tube on the front wheel of a ten-speed
bicycle. The bicycle has caliper brakes that must be loosened unless the
tire is not inflated. It has standard (not quick release) hubs and no front
fender. The axle may not be removed from the wheel because it contains
bearings. The bicycle must be ready to ride when the work described in
your algorithm is completed. Document any assumptions you make.

IV. Results and Discussion

*write your organized detailed set of instructions here. If you have a

document for every instruction then attached it after each instruction.
V. Lifelong Learning of the Laboratory Exercise

*Impact of the laboratory activity in your life (what you learned, how this
activity impacts your field of studies.) To be specific, the impact of learning
problem-solving methods/engineering methods in your field.

Steps:

1. Shift down the bike, use the center stand, or the repair stand.

2. Loosen all nuts that attached the brakes so that it will easily remove the wheel
from the bike.

3. Squeeze the brake to loosen up the cable brake to release it.

4. After releasing the brake, remove the wheel from the frame using the right
tools.

5. Loosen up all the nuts of the axle properly then remove carefully so that the
wheel is totally release from the bike.

6. In removing the inner tube, be sure that it is flattened already. If done continue
#8.

7. Depress the plunger to the valve to release the air of the inner tube.

8. Then slowly remove the inner tube from the wheel

9. Take new inner tube after the removal. Follow the direction on how to put
properly the inner tube inside the wheel.

10. To install the inner tube in the rim, put the valve first on its corresponding hole
before putting the whole inner tube to the wheel.

11. Then, put the whole inner tube to the wheel, and the wheel to the rim

12. After that, put pressure on the inner tube.

13. Then assemble the wheel to the frame or fork.

14. In installing the hub and axle use the proper tools. Be sure that the wheel is in
the center.

15. Attach the nuts of the axle and brakes and tighten them

16. The bike is ready to ride.

Assumptions:
 Don’t have the knowledge to assemble and disassemble.
 Don’t have the tools.
 Don’t have the manual guidelines.
