E4 Miniature Optical Kit Encoder

Description: Features:
The E4 is a miniature rotary encoder with a molded polycarbonate enclosure, which utilizes a ¾ Miniature size
polarized 4-pin Molex connector. This optical incremental encoder is designed to easily mount to ¾ Quick, simple assembly and disassembly
and dismount from an existing shaft to provide digital feedback information. The miniature E4 design ¾ Low cost
makes it ideal when quick and low-cost installations are needed. ¾ High retention snap-in polarized connector
¾ Fits shaft diameters of .059" to .197" (1.5mm to 5mm)
The E4 is easy to add to existing applications and only consists of four main components; base, ¾ Fits shaft lengths of .285" to .392"
cover, hub/code wheel and reflective sensor. ¾ Accepts ±.020" (±.5mm) axial shaft play
¾ Off-axis mounting tolerance of .010"
The base and cover are both constructed of rugged 20% glass filled polycarbonate. Attachment ¾ Tracks from 0 to 30,000 cycles/sec
of the base to a surface may be accomplished by utilizing the two 3-48 x 1/4" screws on a .586" ¾ 100 to 300 cycles per revolution (CPR)
bolt circle or by using the transfer adhesive option. Positioning of the base to the centerline of a ¾ 400 to 1200 pulses per revolution (PPR)
shaft is ensured by use of a centering tool (sold separately). The cover easily snaps onto the base. ¾ 2 channel quadrature TTL squarewave outputs
¾ -10° to +85°C operating temperature
The internal components consist of a reflective sensor and a precision machined aluminum hub. ¾ Single +5V supply
The reflective sensor incorporates an LED light source and a monolithic photo detector with signal ¾ Low power strobe option available
shaping electronics to produce the two channel bounceless quadrature TTL outputs. These ¾ Pin-out is engraved on the cover

Assembly Instructions:
1. Base Mounting 2. Spacer Installation 3. Hub Installation
If a centering tool is used, slip it over shaft and Place spacer tool on optic module. Slip hub disk assembly over shaft until it
into center hole of base before placing base bottoms out against spacer tool. Tighten set
onto shaft. Secure base to mounting surface screw with hex wrench provided while
using two screws. pressing down on hub.

4. Cover Installation
Place housing (cover) on. With thumb and
finger, squeeze ears together to insure that
cover fully latches.

Options:
Transfer Adhesive:
When mounting holes are not available, a pre-applied transfer adhesive (with peel-off backing) is
available for "stick-on" mounting. Use the centering tool (above) to position the base. T-option
specifies transfer adhesive.

Instructions: Peel off paper backing, slip centering tool into center hole of base, insert shaft into
hole of centering tool and slide base and centering tool down onto mounting surface (see figure
1 of assembly instructions). Press to form a good bond, then slip tool off and continue with standard
mounting instructions. A centering tool is highly recommended when using transfer adhesive.

Low Power Strobe:

To reduce the average power requirements, the L-option version of the E4 power can be strobed
on just long enough to sample outputs A and B. This option is the same as our standard E4, except
the internal power bypass capacitor is not installed. The outputs settling time is typically 200 to 400
nano seconds after power up. The minimum sample frequency must be less than the maximum RPM
X the CPR / 10.
