Practice Sheet No.1

Q. 1) A wooden tie is 75 mm wide, 150 mm deep and 1.5 metre long. It is subjected to an axial
pull of 45000 N. The stretch of the member is found to be 0.6380 mm. Find the Young's
Modulus for the material.

Q.2) A brass bar having a cross-sectional area of 1000 mm2 is subjected to axial forces as shown
in Figure 1. Find the total change in length of the bar. Take = 1.05 x105 N/ mm2

Q. 3) A rod tappers uniformly from 30 mm to 15 mm diameter in a length of 300 mm. If the rod
be subjected to an axial load of 6000 N, find the extension of the rod. Take
E=2x105N/mm2.

Q. 4) A bar of steel is of
length 'l' and is of uniform
thickness't'. The width of the
bar varies from 'a' at one end
to 'b' at the other end. Find
the extension of the rod,
when it carries an axial pull
P.
Q. 5) A Straight bar of steel rectangular in section is 3 metres long and is of uniform thickness 15
mm. The width of the rod varies uniformly from 100 mm at one end to 40 mm at the other. If the rod
is subjected to an axial tensile load of 30 kN, find the extension of the rod. Take Es 2 x 105 N/ mm2.
Q. 6) A compound tube is made by shrinking a thin steel tube on a thin brass tube. As and Ab are the
sectional areas of the steel and brass tubes, and Es and Eb are the corresponding values of the Young's
Modulus. Show that for any tensile load the extension of the compound tube is equal to that of a
single tube of the same length and total cross-sectional area, but having a Young's Modulus of
𝐸𝑠 𝐴𝑠 +𝐸𝑏 𝐴𝑏
.
𝐴𝑠 +𝐴𝑏
Q. 7) Two copper rods and one steel rod
together support a load as shown in Figure 3.
If the stresses in copper and steel are not to
exceed 60 N/ mm2 and 120 N/ mm2 find the
safe load that can be supported. Young’s
Modulus for steel is twice that of copper.

Q. 8) A rigid wheel is 3 metres in diameter. It is desired to shrink on to the wheel a thin steel tyre.
Find the internal diameter of the tyre if, after fitting the hoop stress in the tyre is 90 N/ mm2. Find
also the least temperature to which the tyre must be heated above that of the wheel. Take E =
2x105N/ mm2 and  = 1.2 x 10-5 per oC.

Q. 9) A horizontal beam AB with cross sectional dimensions (b = 19 mm) x (h = 200 mm) is

supported by an inclined
strut CD and carries a
load of P = 12 kN at joint
B [Figure 4(a)]. The strut
which consists of two
bars each of thickness
5b/8, is connected to the
beam by a bolt passing
through the three bars
meeting at joint C
[Figure 4(b)].
a) If the allowable shear stress in the bolt is 90 MPa, what is the minimum required diameter d min of
the bolt at C?
b) If the allowable bearing stress in the bolt is 130 MPa, what is the minimum required diameter d min
of the bolt at C?
Q. 10) A ship's spar is attached at the base of a mast by a pin
connection [Figure (5)]. The spar is steel tube of outer
diameter d2 = 80 mm and internal diameter d1 = 70 mm. The
steel pin has diameter d = 25 mm and the two plates
connecting the spar to the pin have thickness t = 12 mm. The
allowable stresses are as follows:- Compressive stress in the
spar, 75 MPa; shear stress in the pin, 50 MPa and the bearing
stress between the pin and the connecting plates is 120 MPa.
Determine the allowable
