Duterte open to use of Dengvaxia amid dengue epidemic

MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday night, August 8, said he is open
to the use of Dengvaxia again in the country following the health department's recent declaration of a
national dengue epidemic.
"Yes, I am open to the use of Dengvaxia again. Maraming patay (Many have died), it's an
epidemic," Duterte said on the sidelines of the oath taking of newly promoted star rank officers of the
Philippine National Police.
"Now, compare it vis-à-vis to those who died, I want to hear the words of the experts, doctors,
and we have enough bright people to tell us. I don't need foreigners to tell me, my own Filipino scientists
and doctors would tell me what to do. I will be guided by their announcements," Duterte added.
Days before the Department of Health (DOH) declared a national dengue epidemic, Malacañang
had already said it is open to making the controversial dengue vaccine available to Filipinos as long
as experts can vouch for its safety and efficacy.
Duterte echoed this on Thursday, saying he would "go on the side of science."
The vaccine has been under public scrutiny since November 2017, after Sanofi Pasteur issued an
advisory that Dengvaxia could cause more severe cases of dengue if administered to a person who had not
been previously infected by the virus.
Dengvaxia was used in a mass immunization program for public school students. The
DOH suspended the program in December 2017 over the controversy.
This year, the country saw a rise in dengue cases, with the health department declaring a national
dengue alert in July. A month after, the status was raised to epidemic to "level up the response" against
the mosquito-borne disease.
The Philippines has recorded the most number of dengue cases in Southeast Asia so far in 2019,
with 146,062 cases and 622 deaths due to the virus. – Rappler.com

Health group warns gov't vs 'knee-jerk' move to lift Dengvaxia ban

MANILA, Philippines – An organization of health professionals cautioned the government
against a “knee-jerk, reductionist, and vested interest-laden” move to lift the ban on the controversial
Dengvaxia vaccine amid an ongoing national dengue epidemic.
Health Action for Human Rights (HAHR), in a statement released on Friday, August 9, said that
the government must instead take a more “rational, holistic, and participatory” approach in addressing the
epidemic, which has seen 622 deaths since January.
HAHR gave the warning as groups are urging the Department of Health (DOH) to lift
its permanent ban on the vaccine. President Rodrigo Duterte even said on Thursday, August 8, that he was
open to the use of Dengvaxia againas cases of the mosquito-borne disease continued to soar, with 140,062
cases recorded as of July.
The DOH maintains that the vaccine has been proven not to be fit for an “outbreak response” and
that it is not a mass immunization product.
HAHR reminded the public that Sanofi Pasteur, Dengvaxia’s manufacturer, pushed for
Dengvaxia’s approval and market release despite “obvious lack of scientific data.” (READ: Dengvaxia
safety trial unfinished when vaccination program launched – Duque)

The group added that other experts had warned against the premature use of the Dengvaxia vaccine in
mass immunization efforts. One such expert was Scott Halstead, a retired dengue expert formerly with the
US military.

Science
Who:Grade 10 students

They’re from: Valenzuela City School of Mathematics and Science

Why: after a city fire tragedy that killed more than 70 factory workers.

What: invented a Multifaceted Window fire exit

They are:
Students Simon Clark Carillo,
Thea Gaviola, Kaila Nicole Jaucian,
Alec Denji Santos

The team used a solenoid lock, a hydraulic cylinder commonly found in car
doors. The window also has a manual button control in case the sensor is out of
range of the fire. A microcontroller runs the automation.

They responded to the city’s subsequent fire safety inspections by designing an

ordinary window that turns into a fire exit with its own smoke sensor and alarm.

Alec Denji Santo: “Yong mga inispect po, constructed buildings na sila.
Magcocost po ng too much time, effort, and money kung magpapagawa pa po
ng fire exit, unlike po kung imomodify na lang [ang mga bintana], magkakaroon
pa po ng alarm (Outfitting an already constructed building with a fire exit would
cost the owner too much time, effort, and money. It would be wiser to simply
change the design of its windows to become the fire exits themselves. The
windows would have their own fire alarms, too),”

The Multifaceted Window was given the third-runner up prize in the Student
Creative Research category during the Department of Science and Technology’s
Regional Invention Contest and Exhibit at the Technological Institute of the
Philippines – Quezon City. The student invention was also selected by the
Technological Application and Promotion Institute for a patent application.

The Multifaceted Window has a built-in MQ2 smoke sensor that detects heat at
31-degree Celsius, and triggers a built-in buzzer as the window unlocks itself for
people to go through and get to safety.
