Design a Flyer
Flyers are used by millions of people every day to communicate all types of information. While
every flyer is unique, they all contain words, pictures and elements designed to grab your
attention and convey their intended message.
Your task is to create a flyer to communicate information on the event of your choice. Your
event must be real—something taking place at school, in your community or abroad—and the
information on your flyer must be factual and accurate.
Use the Graphic Design Elements and Principles we’ve discussed in class to create a flyer
that is eye-catching and innovative. Keep in mind the TYPE of event you are
advertising for and your audience as you design your flyer.
What To Do:
1. Choose your event to advertise. Use the internet to look up the important information
(the who, what, where, when and why) for your event. Write down your research.
2. Use Microsoft Publisher to design your flyer. When you open Publisher, click on the
“Blank Print Publication” link on the left side of your screen. You may NOT use one of
the pre-made designs.
3. Use the tools on the far left side of your screen to add text, pictures and shapes.
4. Once you have completed your flyer and are happy with the design, have it checked for
all of the needed information.
What happens at the event? A variety of fall-themed events, including but not limited to: a
scarecrow judging contest, inflatable slides and obstacle courses, a soccer dart game, “knocker
Who is invited to the event, or who is the event for? Any citizens of Macomb can attend, with
Other important information to include on the flyer: Website of the Macomb Township Parks
and Recreation Program, a site with more information on the event, maps of the activities,
context and prior information about the history of the Fall Fun Fest.
Who was your intended AUDIENCE? The intended audience is anyone, adults or kids, who live in
Macomb and is interested in Fall events.
Why did you design your LAYOUT this way? I designed my layout so that there would be color
and appealing images in the sides, and the important information is in the center/middle.
What FONTS did you choose for your design? I chose Chiller for the title, and I used Arial for
the body text.
What IMAGES did you include? I included a stock photo of a pumpkin, and clip art of a leaf
border and scarecrow. I also used a picture taken at the event from last year.
How/ why did you choose the COLORS you used in your design? I used orange and other fall
colors both to give the flyer a bright, loud feel, and to fit with the fall theme.
