Student Responses To Writing Prompts

#1: Prompt: Besides the title, what evidence is there to suggest that the song is about
the Holocaust? Include one example from the text (lyrics) to support your answer.

Student A’s Answer

The title is about the holocaust. The song said that 6 million people died, and that’s how
I knew it. I don’t think 6 million people have died from too many things, so holocuast is a
good guess at least. That’s what the song is about.

Student B’s Answer

The song “Never Again” by Remedy is clearly about the Holocaust. Remedy, the rapper
and narrator of the song, explicitly includes details about “Mass extermination, total
annihilation” that leads to the death of “6 million” people from different “races, colors,
and creeds” (Remedy, 1). These details reference events from the World War 2 and the
genocide of European Jews and other cultures carried out in concentration camps
during that time. Remedy raps about The Holocaust and includes these grapic details
so nobody will forget the tragic events.

Student C’s Answer

I know the song “Never Again” by Remedy is about the Holocaust becuase he mentions
many things about it. I know the song is about the Holocaust because Remedy
mentions “Having visions, flashes of death camps and prisons, no provisions/ Deceived
by the devils decisions, forced into a slave/ Death before dishonour for those men who
were brave/ Shot and sent to their grave, can't awaken, it's too late” (Remedy, 2). I think
Remedy is thinking about how the Germans felt while they were doing Hitler’s bidding,
and soon came to realize that they were doing evil by going along with Hilter’s plans.

#2: Prompt: Based on the song, how does the songwriter’s use of simile in the text
impact the meaning? Include one example from the text (lyrics) to support your answer.
Student D’s Response
Remedy, the songwriter of “Never Again” use many different types of figurative
language to show the meaning of the song. One example is when he says, “Never
again shall we march like sheep to the slaughter” (Remedy, 1). This simile impacts the
paragraph by showing how easy it was for the Germans to be tricked by Hilter.

Student E’s Response

The song “Never Again” uses similes to show how the victims of The Holocaust felt
during that time. Remedy says that while the Jews were on the train to Auschwitz, the
tears poured like rain from the naked faces. Tears indicates that these people were
crying because they didn’t want to leave their homes and be separated from their
families. Remedy is clearly a great rapper.

Student F’s Response

The song “Never Again” is a terrible rap song. It’s not on beat and Remedy sounds like
he has more important things to do that rap. The lyrics to this song don’t make any
since. Why Remedy thought is was entertaining to sing about the worst genocide in the
history of humankind is beyond me.
