Textbooks: The Language of Literature & The Reader’s Handbook by McDougal Littell.

Goal: The Purpose of this course is to address ELA to help students develop skills to become more
competent and confident readers, foster an appreciation for reading, and encourage the habit of life-
long reading.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: This course provides developmental reading instruction designed to meet
state and district standards for struggling readers.

Emphasis is placed on critical reading and writing skills needed to meet grade level expectations., it
targets students who are identified as struggling reader.

The focuses will be on learning strategies is to improve comprehension and fluency, then aid in
expanding their vocabulary in order to help students become proficient and independent readers. This is
a teacher-direct instruction reading Literature, Reading Informational Texts, Writing, Language, and
Speaking & Listening.

Also include research-based balance literacy program utilizes high-interest literature and data-driven
technology to ensure that differentiated instruction and guided practice take place to support and
motivate student as they progress toward becoming lifelong reader.

COURSE CONTENTS: The emphasis will focus on direct and explicit reading instructions which provides
decoding, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. The areas of reading are teacher-direct
instructions, individual work, group work, projects, creative writing exercises, peer-tutoring, vocabulary
development, making predictions, making inferences, identifying the author purpose, summarizing,
comparing and contrasting, drawing conclusions, sequencing of events, facts and opinions, and context
clues.

Responsibility and Classroom Expectations:

Attendance: It is critical that each student is present and on time every day to class, in order for
students to receive the full benefits of this class, attendance is vital. If a student is out, they will
be given the opportunity to make-up the missed assignments within three days of returning to
school

*Teacher Expectations: -I have high expectations for all of my students and I expect you to do the same.
Attitude-You must have and keep a positive attitude.
*Respect-You must respect yourself, others, teachers and staff, and school property.
*Come to class prepared; have all necessary supplies with you.
*Enter the classroom quietly and begin your daily warp exercise.
*Student will be required to actively participate in classroom activities.
*Be alert no sleeping during class instruction
*No electronic devices, cell phones or ipods/mp3 players are allowed in the classroom.
*NO! form of disrespect toward another student or teacher and/or not following classroom rules will
result in consequences.

*Homework should be done at home.

Make - Up Policy: Each student is responsibility for completing all missed class work during absence
from class.
Retakes/ Revisions: Students are encouraged to retake assessments if they score 69% or less. You may
earn up to 70% for revised work. Please inform the teacher within three days of receiving your
assessment if you would like to retake it.
Assessments Formative Assessments: 50% of final grade (class work, homework, daily or weekly
assignments, quizzes, writing assignments, and smaller projects).
Summative Assessments: 40% of final grade (tests, major reading projects).
Homework: 10% of final grade
Behavior Policy: The classroom should be a learning environment, and behavior which disrupts the
learning process is not acceptable. Possible consequences for disruptive classroom behavior

Grading Scale: 90-100=A 80-89=B 70-79=C 60-69=D

Supplies: Students will need the following supplies for class: -composition book–Kleenex- pencils/pens -
hand sanitizer.

**NOTE: A great % (percentage) of your grades will come from your NOVELS/STUDIES/READING PROJECT.
