What are the WVS ITC courses and who can
apply?
The objective of WVS ITC training courses is to
provide veterinary skills development, inspiration
and advice for veterinarians and veterinary
assistants especially in the field of humane dog
population control and rabies control. The ITC
surgery courses provide the participants with
skills and confidence in good quality surgery and
related clinical skills and increased understanding
in veterinarian’s role in public health matters like
rabies control and responsible use of antibiotics.
It also challenges veterinarians to think how they
can be actively promoting animal welfare in their
daily work.
The courses are meant for veterinarians and last
year veterinary students, who are actively
working in the clinical field and who are
committed to get involved with spay/neuter
programs in India directly after the course.
Starting in 2020, in order to be able to benefit
from the more subsidized training course fee, the
veterinary applicant has to provide a signed letter
from an established ABC program stating that the
veterinary applicant will be working for at least 3
months in that ABC project immediately after the
training course. A model for this letter is at the
end of this document. Without this letter the
applicant is required to pay the higher
registration fee.
Senior veterinarians without prior small animal
surgical experience and who are working mainly
in administration and project planning, are
welcome to attend the ‘ABC-program manager’ -
course to get a briefing of the importance of
humane dog population management and rabies

control and how to run an ABC-program, so that
they could enforce quality ABC-programs in their
areas and encourage junior veterinarians to
attend the ITC surgery course.
Couple of times a year, we have also been able to
provide ‘ITC-specials’. These are shorter courses
run by certified international veterinary
specialists of different fields.
Over the years the ITC surgery courses have
become extremely popular and participants often
need to book well in time (many months before)
to ensure a seat on a course. The non-refundable
and non-transferable registration fee paid as a
donation to the WVS India is:
Rs. 2,000/veterinarian with a duly signed
commitment letter from an ABC program
Rs. 10,000/veterinarian without a commitment
letter
Rs. 1,000/assistants and dog-catchers who work
in ABC programs/animal charities
Rs. 2,000/ assistants and managers who don’t
work in animal charities.
Registration form and a model for the ABC
program commitment letter is at the end of this
document. Please fill them both and send it
together with the DD in favour of Worldwide
Veterinary Service India, payable in Ootacamund
to the WVS ITC address in Ooty, Tamil Nadu.
Please note we will only accept Demand Drafts as
the payment.
The participants in all categories also need to
bring Rs. 3600 in cash to pay on their arrival
towards the catering during the program.

What to bring:
Travel Arrangements / WVS ITC in Ooty, TN
 Depending on the direction you are
coming from, you should arrive to
Coimbatore or to Bangalore first.
 From Bangalore, take an overnight bus to
Ooty (8 hours) and from Ooty bus station,
take a local bus to Coonoor and ask the
driver to stop at Kanigarajnagar – village
bus stop. ITC is 50meters ahead, on the
right side of the road.
 From Coimbatore, take a bus to Ooty and
get off about 20 min before Ooty (2km
after Aruvankadu Cordite factory) in the
same Kanigarajnagar –village.
 Please call our office assistant, Ms
Aishwarya 965 533 9464 to inform about
your approximate arrival time, especially if
you are arriving late in the evening. All
participants are requested to arrive at the
ITC the evening before the course starts
(day given on the schedule is the day
when the course starts at 9 am)
Health
As you will be working hands on with animals,
valid pre-exposure Rabies and Tetanus vaccines
are essential and it is your responsibility to
ensure that you have taken all required
vaccinations BEFORE you come to the WVS India
ITC. Failure to have your pre-exposure
vaccinations prior arrival may result you being
removed from the course. Please note that the
days are long (8:30 am – 7:30pm) and involve lot
of standing. We do not recommend this course
for people who have problems standing for
longer periods of time.

 Practical / comfortable clothes to work in.
 Wet weather gear during monsuun
months and warm clothing all the year
around is also needed, evenings and
nights in Ooty can become quite chilly
 Towel, soap and all required toiletries
 Own bedsheets/ sleeping bag if preferred.
Basic blankets and bedsheets are provided
in the ITC dormitories.
 Cash (Rs.3600/ 12 days course) to pay the
catering fee on arrival (catering fee is the
same for veterinarians, assistants and
project managers and it includes a buffet
dinner in a restaurant in Ooty on the last
night of the course)
 Cash to buy a surgical instrument set for
you to take home (Optional for those who
are interested). Standard instrument set
with drapes costs approximately Rs. 3500.
Please note that you need to inform the
ITC vets on your arrival if you are
interested in buying an instrument set as
they are not always readily stocked but
need to be ordered.
 The vets will also be provided with TWO
WVS India scrub tops, one surgery cap, an
ABC-surgery handout and PROTECT ME-
poster for responsible use of antibiotics
 NOTE: We seem to be losing pens all the
time so please bring a good collection of
pens for writing records and taking notes!
 NOTE: We get regular power cuts and
having your own headtorch during
surgeries will be very helpful for you.

Accommodation & food

Accommodation will be provided free of charge at the ITC
in simple dormitories. If you wish to upgrade your
accommodation you can choose to stay outside on your
own cost. In ITC you will have three vegetarian meals per
day and two tea breaks. On one night we will go out
together for a dinner. The ITC meals as well as the common
dinner outside are covered by your catering fee.
