Homework 6 (30 points) Name(s): Blessing Aghayedo, Faiza Elmi

STAT 301 Due: Thursday, July 25th @ 11:59pm

1. The interocular pressure (mm Hg) values recorded for 21 elderly subjects can be found in the file
interocular.jmp on D2L.

Research Question – Is there evidence that the mean interocular pressure for elderly subjects if
greater than 14 mm Hg?

a. Using JMP, carry out a hypothesis test to answer the research question of interest. Make sure to
clearly state your hypotheses, condition(s), identify the value of the test statistic, identify the value of
the p-value, and provide a conclusion in context of the research question of interest. Also, paste your
JMP output used to answer the question below. (12 points)

Ho: µ = 14
Ha: µ > 14

Since N= 20 it is not greater than or equal to 30 (sufficiently large).

Since the red and green line on the histogram roughly match and most of the points on the quantile
plot fall/near the reference line we can conclude that there is a normal distribution.

TS= 2.1415

P-value: 0.0227

The P-value is 0.0227 which is less than 0.05 meaning there is evidence
that the mean interocular pressure for the elderly subjects is greater
than 14 mm Hg.

1
b. T F Based on the hypothesis test conducted in part a, a Type II Error could have been committed.
(2 points)

2. According to a University of Florida wildlife ecology and conservation researcher, the average level of
mercury uptake in wading birds in the Everglades has declined over the past several years (UF News, 2000).
Five years ago the average level was 15 parts per million (ppm).

Research Question – Is there evidence that the average level of mercury uptake in
wading birds in the Everglades has declined over the past five years?

a. Determine appropriate null and alternative hypotheses that would be used to test the research
question of interest. Note: Using symbol notation is probably going to be easiest in this case. (2 pts)

Ho: µ = 15
Ha: µ < 15

b. Describe a Type I error in context for this situation. (3 points)

Type I error would be concluding that the average level of mercury uptake in wading birds in the
Everglades has declined below 15 ppm over the past five years, when it actually has not declined and
remains at 15 ppm.

c. Describe a Type II error in context for this situation. (3 points)

Type II error would be concluding that the average level of mercury uptake in wading birds in the
Everglades has not declined from the 15 ppm over the past five years, when it actually has declined
below the 15 ppm.

3. The subjects of a study by Dugoff et al. (American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 2003) were 10
obstetrics and gynecology interns at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. The researchers
wanted to assess competence in performing clinical breast examinations. One of the baseline measurements
was the number of such examinations performed. The data which can be found in the file examinations.jmp
on D2L give the number of examinations performed for this sample of 10 interns.

a. Using JMP, find a 99% confidence interval for the true mean number of clinical breast examinations
performed. Paste your JMP output in your solution. (3 points)

Interval: 16.16917 ≤ µ ≤ 35.6308

2
b. Interpret the 99% confidence interval found in part a. (5 points)

99% confident the true mean of clinical breast examinations performed is between 16.16917 and
35.6308 exams.
