ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

ROANLD U. WACAS
MAED II

1. Discuss how the environment is affected by the following:

A. Filipino Values
 Certainly there are many negative Filipino Values that are adversely affecting our
environment. An attitude of "what goes around, comes around" or "come what
may." We have a tendency to surrender our future to fate. We often accept bad
news or circumstances without trying to stop or change them. We tend to pretend
we’ve seen nothing specially our problem with garbage, illegal logging and kaingin
system
B. Sociological and economic impact
Natural resources are essential inputs for production in many sectors, while
production and consumption also lead to pollution and other pressures on the
environment. Poor environmental quality in turn affects economic growth and
wellbeing by lowering the quantity and quality of resources or due to health impacts,
etc. In this context, environmental policies can curb the negative feedbacks from the
economy on the environment (and vice-versa). But how effective they are and
whether they generate a net benefit or a net cost to society is the subject of much
debate and depends on the way they are designed and implemented.

C. Political Impact
The government can control a lot of ways we affect the environment:
 It controls what land we may use. It can parcel out millions of acres as national
parks, or incentivize people to develop land.
 The government can favor certain industries, through tariffs, subsidies, and
regulations.
 Certain industries pollute more than others. Certain industries directly
reduce pollution.
 The government can set environmental standards.
 Environmental and climate treaties can be signed with other nations
2. Garbage disposal and collection in urban areas is a big problem. In fact most of these
problems are experience by most residents in Tabuk City. If you were the city mayor
how will you solve this problem? Support your answer with Philippine environmental
laws.
 Currently there are many laws passed by congress regarding our environment.
Republic Act (RA) 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 a
landmark environmental legislation in the Philippines. Being the Mayor proper
implementation of these laws can rapidly solve the problem.

3. Kalinga, our very own province boast of having 36% of the Philippine gold deposit and
unexplored uranium. This is precisely the big reason why big companies such as
Chevron, Makilala and Caltex are very interested to re-open big scale mining activity in
the province. In fact chevron has sponsored the scholarship program of some of the
children of the families living in the affected barrios. There are also many Kalinga
Families particularly in the municipalities of Balbalan and Pail who depend solely on
small scale mining for their livelihood.

 Mining Industry has contributed a lot to the Philippine Economy, as per record it is
endowed with US$ 1.4 trillion in mineral reserves, including gold, copper, nickel,
aluminum, and chromite. The mining potential is one of largest in the world; being
second in in gold and third in copper resources. Base on the data presented, we
cannot deny the fact that It will contribute for the development of our province and
country as a whole. However to balance nature and economy, we have existing laws
that will ensure the protection of the environment such as Republic Act No. 7942 An
Act Instituting A New System Of Mineral Resources Exploration, Development,
Utilization, And Conservation. I am in favor that mining companies will explore our
natural resources for as long as there should be a strict implementation of the
responsible mining act.

4. Give the laws of ecology and discuss each briefly how do you apply these laws to
human society?
“The earth can provide for everyone’s need but not for everyone’s greed.
 The dictum is comparative to the economic law “UNLIMITED HUMAN WANTS”.
Man always look for MORE resulting to GREEDINESS. If we only use what we
need, Mother Nature could have provide our basic necessity such as food and
shelter. However what happen most of the time is we get more than what we
need thereby making our natural resources on scarce.
We MUST not exceed production.
 This is parallel to “DO NOT SPEND BEYOND YOUR MEANS”. In the law of
Environmental Science, our consumption should exceed beyond what nature
produce, otherwise if balance in nature is violated, everything will result to
scarcity of resources.
There is Unity and stability in the Unity of difference.
 In relation to Environmental Science, the clause would mean uniting as one
despites cultural or sociological difference can contribute to the development of
the community as a whole. If every one of us will contribute to protect the
environment we could make a big difference.
