Chapter 1

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Background of the Study

In our modern generation, people are now dependent on

technology they used in their everyday lives. Many of us will

agree that modern technology of today changed the way we see the

world with our own viewpoint, it helps us in our everyday work

and routines. It brings fun and relaxation to our lives.

Mobile devices are shaping the future of computing. Nearly

89% of Filipinos own a cell phone and 65% of those are

smartphones. For higher education, College-age students expect

mobile compatibility not only on websites, but mobile

applications as well. Addressing the growing mobile demand

requires study, strategy, and development. Mobile development is

critical for institutes of higher education, but it is also

fraught with complications, costs, and confusion. The mobile

landscape is constantly shifting for developers and consumers; it

is creating a need to carefully calculate and evolve solutions to

improve software for mobile users.

Along with their books and school supplies, most college

students -- and many younger students -- make their daily trip to

school with their trusty smartphone. Mobile phones connect

students to one another, to educational resources, and to a

potential host of distractions. The presence of cell phones

presents both opportunities and challenges for today's students.

Mobile phones can be a helpful academic tool, or a hurtful

academic disruption depending upon the attitude and use pattern

[1]
of the students and the policies of the schools they attend.

Examinations have always been present in the course of

student’s life. They are the ways to test how much a learner

knows about the subject/s that the exam covers. Examinations can

be administered orally, on paper or on a computer. In school, no

standardized tests are usually given to students by teachers,

since it is flexible in scope and format, variable in difficulty

and significance. It is used to determine the proficiency level

of students as well as help motivate students to study. With

this, exams will provide feedback to students regarding their

achievement in the subjects enrolled.

The primary advantage of a reviewer is that it reduces the

amount of information to be learned. On the contrary, though the

use of this aims students to find out easier, relying on review

materials may cause failure in comprehension of the subject, it

is for the reason that they based it on the study materials

alone. Today’s world is constantly changing. People tend to

modernize the old ways to more innovative methods of learning

things. With the aid of technology, review materials have been

shifted from an ordinary textbook to an electronic document that

can be viewed over mobile devices.

Criminology is the study of crime, criminal behavior

patterns and the law. An introductory criminology course is taken

at the onset of a student's core degree requirements. This course

covers basics in criminology theories, patterns and behaviors.

Students learn socioeconomic and sociocultural influences that

have affected crime over the years. Topics in this course may

also cover crime prevention, law enforcement, criminal justice

systems and crime victims.

One common problem that is encountered in taking the exam is

that there is no review center near their area that will help

them evaluate the test in order for the examinees to pass. Thus,

examinees shall review by themselves to prepare for the test. An

effective way to pass the test is for the examinee to have a

review materials that will assist them in evaluating. Due to the

fact that there are inadequate review centers where they can have

their review, most reviewers find it not conducive to review due

to insufficient resources. Although this has not been an issue in

the society, the researchers decided to make a study materials

that will assist them in order to pass the Nursing licensure

examination.

The researchers wish to develop a review material that runs

on Android and IOS mobile phones in order for the examinees to

review and hopefully pass the Criminologist licensure

examination. This proposed project also has a Web application to

support the user. This project will be used as an avenue for

reviewers to possess an individual review material which are

friendly, handy, and on-the-go resources for Criminologist

Licensure Examination (CLE).

The purpose of this proposed project is to aid the examinees

as they review for the Criminologist Licensure Examination. With

and by this, the reviewers will have the mobility to review, for

this only requires an Android and iOS-supported devices. The

hassle in bringing in the review materials will be minimized,

thus making the study for Criminology Examination worthwhile.

Also, this proposed project will provide convenience, for it lets

the user take the examination that means it has both the

reviewing material and a mock examination in one application.

Therefore, this proposed use is very beneficial to all

Criminologist Licensure Examination takers.

Statement of the Problem

This is a concise description of the issues that needs to be

addressed by the developers in the development of the project.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the issue encountered in the existing system

reviewer for CLE takers at PHINMA-University of

Pangasinan?

2. What are the features of the proposed system, a CLE

mobile application reviewer for PHINMA-University of Pangasinan?

3. What is the acceptability level of the proposed system,

a mobile application reviewer for CLE takers?

Objectives of the Study

The study aims to design and develop a mobile application

reviewer for CLE takers of Phinma University of Pangasinan that

is intended for all students who are preparing for the

professional examination for Criminology.

Specifically, it aims to achieve the following:

1. To identify the process of the existing system, a mobile

application reviewer for CLE takers.

2. To identify and enumerate the features needed for the

proposed system.
3. To determine the level of acceptability of the proposed

system, a mobile application reviewer for CLE takers.

Scope and delimitation

The system will provide CLE takers an essential means of

improvement to their review called Criminologist licensure exam

mobile reviewer.

The study identifies the different features that will

comprise the Criminologist licensure exam mobile reviewer

application effectively help and assist students and school

management.

The application needs to be connected to the internet to be

able to sign in and access their account provided by the admin of

the Department of Health and Sciences. Once logged in, the

student can access and open their account offline. The following

are the scope and modules included in the study.

Log in module. The Login Module is a portal module that allows

users to type a user name and password to log in. This module can

be placed on any module tab to allow users to log in to the

system.

Review quiz module. The review quiz module allows the user to

perform a quiz type review where you can view the correct answer

after each question preview.

Mock up module. The mock up module is where you can take the exam

by this time timer is added, however the user is incapable to

view the correct answer until the exam is completed.

Tips and guidelines module. In this module you can view the tips,
guidelines, rules and regulation in taking and how to use the

mobile review application.

Ratings and statistics module. It produces a graph informing

users about the rating and statistics if they improve their

scores through a bar graph.

Website

Adding, updating and removing of user module. In this module,

admin can add, update and delete user account.

Significance of the study

Mobile application reviewer for CLE takers give way for an

alternative yet more accessible way of review center. A modern

and innovative way to continue learning. Particularly, the

following will benefited by the developed application/system:

To the Students. The system will provide an easy way to take

the review for the CLE examination because students can access it

offline and will lessen their expenses.

To the School. The University will benefit to the study as

an alternative and additional way for their students to learn and

test themselves meaning the study will give way to more

competitive students with a higher passing rate.

To the Researchers. The study will help the researchers to

make use of I.T as a modern, innovative and flexible tool in

advancing and improving any field of knowledge and skills of

people especially in system development.

To the Developers. They can enhance their developing skills

in their different roles or position in the team through

completing the application.

To the Future developer. They will be able to continue or

develop new version of licensure examination for Nursing and they

would apply their knowledge in developing application.
