POND ECOSYSTEM

Biotic Components: dragon fly, bacteria, frog, fishes, water, water lilies, algae, eichhornia plant.

Abiotic Components: Light, sediments such as rocks and sand, fresh water, dissolved oxygen,
temperature

Importance:

A. The biotic and abiotic factors work in harmony in order to sustain life. Without the other factor in
this ecosystem, all factors will be chaotic. The producers, consumers, and decomposers are
interdependent, the pond ecosystem has the role to provide aquatic life.

B. Ponds are providers of food such as fishes for people and having a fresh water provides a healthy
habitat for these fishes to live and multiply.

C. Ponds carry out a life for living organisms that cannot survive in other intense environment, its
stable temperature and silent surroundings manifest the survival of these organisms.

Site human activities that can harm the pond ecosystem and provide a solution to this:

Activity : water pollution, such as the improper waste disposal of garbage thrown to ponds that
pollutes the fresh water
Solution: let us prohibit this kind of activity because it compromises the lives of organisms in the
pond. They need fresh water and oxygen to live furthermore. Surrounding fences to ponds can be an
alternative.
Activity: Urbanization can occupy the space needed for this ecosystem to cultivate their lives. Land
reform for Subdivisions can be an example.
Solution: We should create a law advocating the protection of ponds and limit the transformation of
land which creates disturbances to our pond ecosystem.
Activity : Overfishing and abuse to aquatic families in the pond. Transferring of water lilies and
getting large amount of fishes for personal consume can destroy the population of fishes in the pond
and can lessen the dissolved oxygen needed in this ecosystem.
Solution : lessen the amount of getting water lilies and fishes in the pond. You can be a responsible
consumer by first, multiplying the number of fishes and water lilies so that they could manage their
population or at least, just don’t consume its fishes when you can buy them in the market directly.
