Research Paper

Schools should not have homework because people have lives ,besides, school and some have

jobs at a really early time in life due to either parents or poor money situation or both. Kids don’t

always have time to do it and even if they do they most likely won’t want to or guess on it. In

addition to having things to do they also could have a bedtime or a religious activity that needs to

be done.

Homework should not be given to *all* students because some students don’t need or want

to do it Some students already know the unit well and don’t complete or forget the

homework and it brings their grades down a little or a lot.

If Schools thought about it giving homework to d- students and none to c+ that will motivate the

d- students to get higher grades to not have any homework. Schools can also find the students

that continuously fail and put them in a slower or more detailed and explaining class.

- The average school days are middle/high schools 7am-2pm(7 hours) elementary 8am-3 or 4pm

around (7-8 hours).

-The average (WITH HOMEWORK) depending on amount adds at least 15 minutes to a few

hours which can make school technically longer.

The National Education Association and National Parent-Teacher Association Said there is a 10

minute per grade for homework so 10 minutes for 1st grade 120 for 12th grade.. This is very

stressful especially for the 12th and 11th graders that probably have a job and senior/junior

projects. So having that 2 hours for homework is wrong. A 8 hour day plus those 2 hours plus a

job is like 16-19 hours a day leaving little sleep to prepare for the next day.

The homework also gradually gets more difficult as of increasing age and grade so more and

more difficult and more and more amount. Students shouldn’t have to have schedules the same

or even longer than their parents. Since the students have all these task to do it also makes

housework if they have chores worse and if they need tutoring they don’t have time. That failing

class could be a class that they might need to graduate and will add even more of a load to their

list.

According to (time.com) some students have workweeks comparable to adults. Adding

homeworks and sometimes even projects makes it even longer. They explained it and called the

work amount “endless” and I agree. Teachers want you working from start to finish not missing

a second then you get even more work to complete. And they wonder why students skip and stay
home and walk out because schools are overflooding students with work. And even if you miss a

day it’s waiting on you when you come back. They should give no homework because of the

times of early morning to afternoon Then most teens use the rest of the day for other plans or

sleep and this is disturbed or interrupted by homework. This happens 5 out of 7 days in most

areas then only 2 days off.

According to(Neatoday.org) some students shouldn’t be penalized for their work when they

don’t have the resources at home necessary to successfully complete the homework. Then the

teacher still fails them when they had no control of it and the goal of that assignment is irrelevant

because the purpose was achieved.

Example: A student in 10th grade has plans to attend a family reunion on a saturday and he

missed thursday and friday then has homework online to make up for it and it’s due on sunday

for his 4 classes And now must stay up really late. Then if he has other things to do, that adds

another thing that he has to do during the day, then he will be really tired for the reunion or even

miss it.

My personal Point Of View - Weekend homework I most times procrastinate or put it off until

sunday night because I don’t need extra practice for a class that I have a 70 or above in.
(Speaking from experience) - We work about 8 hours a day nonstop except for lunch ( which in

all the schools I went to lunch is not great or healthy ) then you come home starving, tired, and

ready to quit. Then homework, it’s not right to do that especially not to the c+ kids. Also in the

high schools in my area you wake up at 5-6 and be at school at 7. That’s before sunlight is

outside then to barely keep your eyes open and do work throughout the day just to get home to

more work.

I personally don’t believe in bringing school home with me and even if you give a legit reason

why you didn’t do well on it or didn’t complete it the teachers just fail you anyway. And that

failing grade could be a .01% difference in your GPA that affects you getting into a place or job

you wanna be in like college or a manager position in a business.

Counter Argument - Homework is necessary for some who have enough time and are motivated

enough to successfully complete it. Some will benefit and understand the work a little more some

will do it just to raise their grade even a little. According to (www.newsweek.com) Students that

do their homework seriously are more “contentious”.

Students don’t want to do homework at any time but especially on a monday or friday because

those are the most commonly start and ending days of a school week in most areas. Just to hear
the word homework at least half the students sigh or some sign of irritation unless it’s something

fun or a little bit of it. Extra work like this is one of the reasons people drop out some people can

handle it and others brain can process so much work and thoughts at one time and manage to

complete all of it.

Overall homework has it´s purposes but it has more cons than pros and it also impacts some

students positively and some negatively. The amount of homework is the amount of pressure

inflicted on the student. Homework is not a necessary thing and some students just are naturally

not good at homework and some are. I think homework should not be given at all because for the

lazy but not necessarily obtuse students or procrastinators it hurts them when they don’t feel like

it or keep losing focus on the homework.
