HEMOPOIETIC TISSUES or Organs – formed in the bone marrow
sites where blood cell formation occurs. (megakaryocytes is the
BONE MARROW – principal hemopoietic largest of all the blood cells)

LIVER, SPLEEN, LYMPH NODES – sites
of blood cell formation during embryonic life
and in certain pathological conditions.
Bone Marrow – located in the:
1. Medullary cavities of long bones
2. Spongiosa of vertebral bodies, ribs,
sternum
3. Flat bones of the pelvis

Blood Cells:
1. Erythrocytes (RBC)

- Mature form has no nucleus,
appears as a biconcave disc.
- Life span is 120 days then is
degraded in the bone marrow.

a. MONOCYTES
- Largest among the WBC
- Kidney-shaped nucleus with
agranular bluish cytoplasm.
- Spend 1 to 3 days in the
blood and move into the
tissues where they are d. EUSINOPHIL
transformed into - Bilobed single nucleus with
Macrophages. large, bright red granules in
- 2 to 10% of all WBC the cytoplasm.
- Function>phagocytosis - Spends in the few days in the
blood then enters the tissues
- Functions: Phagocytosis,
Carries histamine
- 1-4% of all WBC

b. LYMPHOCYTES
- Round nucleus with bluish
agranular cytoplasm
- Function is programmed by
the Thymus gland
- Spends a few days in the
blood then settles down in the
tissues
- Carries antibodies
- 20-40% of WBC
e. BASOPHIL
- Clover-leaf shaped single
nucleus with bluish granules
but may not be seen because
they are soluble in water
- Carries histamine and heparin
- 0-1% of all WBC

c. NEUTROPHIL
- One nucleus with 2 to 5 lobes
- Pinkish granular cytoplasm
- Spends one day in blood then
enters the tissues
- Function>phagocytosis
- 50-70% of all WBC.
