as the actual length of the path shortest distance from initial to final
travelled by the body irrespective of its position of the body.
direction of motion.

2. Distance is a scalar quantity. 2. Displacement is a vector quantily.

3. Distance is always taken as positive. 3. Displacement can be positive, negative
or zero.
4. Distance travelled by a body changes 4. Displacement of body does not depend
according to the path of the body. on its path, but depends only on its
initial and final positions.

Uniform motion Non uniform motion

equal distance in equal intervals of time is unequal distance in equal intervals of time
uniform motion. is non-uniform motion.

Q4. Complete the sentences:

a. displacement b. negative c. direction d)total momentum e) third

Q5.Give scientific reasons:

a) When an object falls freely to the ground, its acceleration is uniform.

Ans. The motion of a freely falling body is an example of uniform acceleration because
while falling the velocity increases or decreases by equal amounts in equal intervals of
time.

b) Even though the magnitudes of action force and reaction force are equal and their
directions are opposite, their effects do not get cancelled.
Ans. 1) Action and reaction forces cancel each other only when acting on the same
body.
2) When they act on different bodies they will not cancel each other, although they are
of same magnitude and opposite direction.

c) It is easier to stop a tennis ball as compared to a cricket ball, when both are travelling
with the same velocity.
Ans.1)The mass of the tennis ball is less than that of the cricket ball.
2)Thus, momentum (p=mv) is greater for cricket ball since the velocity is same.
Hence, it is easier to stop a tennis ball than a cricket ball.

d) The velocity of an object at rest is considered to be uniform.

1. A body is said to be in a state of uniform motion if it moves with a constant speed.
2. An object at rest covers zero distance at equal intervals of time.
Hence …..

Q7.Solve the following examples:

Ans 1.Given: Total distance travelled=18m+22m+14m=54m

Total time=3s+3s+3s=9s

To find: Average speed=?

Formula: Average speed= Total distance

Total time

Solution:
3
Average speed = Total distance
Total time
= 54 = 6m/s
9
Average speed =6m/s
Ans2. Given: Mass of the object ( m1)=16kg
a1 =3m/s2
Mass of other object (m2) =24kg

To find: Force and acceleration

Formula:
F=m1xa1
Solution:
1) F=m1xa1
F=16x3=48
Force=48N
1) a2=F/m2
=48/24=2
a2 = 2m/s2

3) Given: Mass of the bullet (m1) =10gm=10/100=0.01kg

Initial velocity of bullet (u1) =1.5m/s
Mass of wooden plank (m2) =90gm=90/100=0.09kg
Initial velocity of the plank (u2) =0m/s
To find: Final velocity of bullet
v1=v2=v i.e common velocity
Formula: Total initial momentum= Total final momentum
m1u1+m2u2= m1v1+m2v2
Solution:
m1u1+m2u2= m1v1+m2v2
0.01x1.5+0.09x0=0.01x v+0.09xv
0.015+0=0.1v
v=0.015/0.1=0.15m/s

Velocity=0.15m/s

4
Ans4 Given: Total distance travelled=100m+80m+45m=225m
Total time=40s+40s+20s=100s

To find: Average speed=?

Formula: Average speed= Total distance

Total time

Solution:
Average speed = Total distance
Total time
= 225 =2.25m/s
100

Average speed =2.25m/s
