Part A - Moment about an Axis/Moment in 3D Plane

Question 1. Structure OAB is built in at point O and supports forces from two cables. Cable CAD
passes through a frictionless ring at point A, and cable DBE passes through a frictionless ring at
point B. If the force in cable CAD is 250 N and the force in cable DBE is 100 N, use a vector
approach to determine
(a) the moment of all cable forces about point A. (5 marks)
(b) the moment of all cable forces about point O. (5 marks)

Question 2. Given the statically determinate system below, provide the;

(a) FBD (free-body diagram) of the jib crane; (5 marks)
(b) Magnitude of the Tensile force acting on the supporting cable; (5 marks)
(c) Magnitude of force at pin A. (5 marks)
Also, the beam AB is a standard 0.5-m I-beam with a mass of 100 kg/m of length

model, find:
(a) The force in member CG. (10 marks)
(b) Potential zero force members (Hint: you DO NOT need to show work for this part at all
to get the credit). (3 marks)
(c) The tension in the cable that connects point G to the wall. (2 marks)

figure). The gate is supported by a pin at B and a vertical cable at A, and the contact between
the gate and the bottom of the channel at A is frictionless. The vertical wall BC is fixed in
position. If the gate’s 50 lb. weight is uniformly distributed, determine the cable force T
required to begin opening the gate. (Neglect frictional force at the bottom of the gate i.e. point
A) (20 marks)

coordinate value in the form: (𝑥̅ , 𝑦̅)
(Hint: tabulate the area, the individual centroid lengths and any other calculations for neatness
and organizational purposes)
