3 Overview
Figure 3-1 Hardware evolution from traditional MIMO sites to massive MIMO sites
Basic massive MIMO functions include sector beamforming and LEOFD-131301 Massive
MIMO Introduction. LEOFD-131301 Massive MIMO Introduction is a prerequisite for
activating a massive MIMO cell.
4.1 Principles
Sector Beamforming
Massive MIMO enables an eNodeB to apply beam weight for cells in a sector so that the cell
beam deployment modes are adapted to UE distributions in the sector. In this way, massive
MIMO achieves spatial multiplexing gains and beamforming gains and improves cell
capacity.
The eUCellSectorEqm.CellBeamMode parameter must be set to MASSIVE_MIMO_Ph2
for the sector equipment bound with the massive MIMO cell. Sector beamforming requires
LEOFD-131302 32T32R Massive MIMO Package.
Huawei provides cell beam deployment modes and weights for typical UE distribution
scenarios in the beam weight file. This file is integrated into the eNodeB software package.
After the beam weight file is activated, the SectorSplitGroup and SectorSplitCell MOs are
used to configure the beams of each cell in the sector.
l The SectorSplitGroup MO specifies a beam group consisting of AAU sector equipment
for a carrier. Table 4-1 and Table 4-2 describe the number of beams in the inner and
outer circles supported by each sector split group based on the settings of the
SectorSplitGroup.BeamDeploymentMode and SectorSplitGroup.BeamTemplateId
parameters when the AAU5711 and AAU5711a are used, respectively. The parameters
Cell.DlBandWidth, Cell.UlBandWidth, Cell.DlEarfcn, Cell.UlEarfcn,
Cell.UlEarfcnCfgInd, Cell.TxRxMode, Cell.CrsPortNum, and Cell.CPRICompression
must be set to the same values for cells in a given sector split group.

l The SectorSplitCell MO is used to set the beam index information of split cells in the
sector split group, and the SectorSplitCell.CellBeamIndex parameter specifies the beam
index of each sector split cell. A specific beam template ID is designed for each sector
split cell and each cell corresponds to one beam. The SectorSplitCell.CellBeamTilt
parameter specifies the beam tilt of a sector split cell.
l Each sector split cell is associated with a Cell MO, which is used to configure cell-
related parameters, such as Cell.CrsPortNum and Cell.TxRxMode.
l Static shared beam (SSB) is enabled when the SectorSplitGroup.BeamTemplateId
parameter is set to a value greater than 1. For details, see 5 SSB.
l Dynamic dedicated beam (DDB) is enabled when the
SectorSplitGroup.BeamTemplateId parameter is set to 1. For details, see 6 DDB.
l If more than 28 antennas are functional, the cell works properly. However, network
performance, such as the cell throughput, may deteriorate. The impact is directly
proportionate to the number of faulty antennas.
l If 16 to 28 antennas are functional, the cell cannot provide services but is still activated.
l The massive MIMO cell is deactivated if fewer than 16 antennas are functional.
This feature is free from parameter control. It is enabled by default for massive MIMO cells.

In this situation, the value of the alarm parameter Specific Problem is Antenna channel
exceptions. The number of functional antennas can be determined based on the values of the
TX Channel Numbers In The Cell and RX Channel Numbers In The Cell parameters.
This feature is free from parameter control. It is enabled by default for massive MIMO cells.
4.2.1 Benefits

l Before the original beam weight file is activated, the new beam weight file is still stored in the
eNodeB.
l After the old beam weight file is activated, the new beam weight file is deleted.
5 SSB
5.1 Principles
SSB is deployed based on AAUs. It forms multiple fixed beams on the horizontal and vertical
planes through beamforming. SSB is suitable for hotspot capacity expansion scenarios. Each
beam independently schedules UEs. In this way, time-frequency resources are reused between
beams, improving cell capacity. This function is recommended when an operator wants to
expand network capacity but has no free frequencies.
SSB forms multiple beams on the horizontal and vertical planes corresponding to multiple
sector split cells based on the settings of the parameters SectorSplitGroup.BeamTemplateId,
SectorSplitGroup.BeamDeploymentMode, and SectorSplitCell.CellBeamIndex. This
function requires that the SectorSplitGroup.BeamTemplateId parameter be set to 2, 3, or 4
and that the SectorSplitGroup.BeamDeploymentMode parameter be set to MODE_0,
MODE_1, or MODE_2. The SectorSplitCell.CellBeamIndex parameter specifies the beam
index of each sector split cell. Each beam corresponds to a cell.
SSB forms inner and outer cells (the AAU5711a has no inner cells) on the vertical plane by
setting different cell beam tilts through the SectorSplitCell.CellBeamTilt parameter. Figure
5-1 shows the typical SSB for the AAU5711. Beams 0 and 1 correspond to two inner cells,
and beams 2 and 3 correspond to two outer cells. Figure 5-2 shows the typical SSB for the
AAU5711a. Beams 0 to 3 correspond to four outer cells.
Each logical port of a cell served by a normal antenna is mapped to an independent physical
channel. The beams of massive MIMO cells, however, are formed through beamforming on 32
antennas. Therefore, signals transmitted from multiple logical ports by multiple cells are carried on
the same physical channel, achieving power gains. To ensure that the power of each physical
channel does not exceed the rated power of a single AAU channel, the maximum cell-specific
reference signal (CRS) power is subject to the maximum power allowed by the carrier, the number
of split cells on the carrier, the number of CRS ports, and the values of PA/PB. For details, contact
Huawei technical support.
where:
This function takes effect only when all of the following conditions are met:
5.2.1 Benefits
System capacity increases considerably in urban areas where there is contiguous coverage.
The gain of the SSB function is closely related to the cell load, coverage contiguity of SSB
cells, and UE distribution proportion of each cell. The gain is high if the cell load is heavy,
SSB cells provide contiguous coverage, and UEs are evenly distributed in cells.
Otherwise, DDB is recommended. For details about the criteria, see the corresponding site
selection criteria.
PDCCH power resource improvement prevents the limitation in cell capacity caused by
insufficient PDCCH resources and improves the cell throughput and average UE throughput
in the downlink. When the PDCCH resources of a cell are limited (namely, the equivalent
CCE usage is greater than 60%), the optimal gains can be achieved.
5.2.2 Impacts
Network Impacts
l SSB may decrease the UE-perceived throughput in contrast with 2T2R 3-sector
networking when traffic is light (for example, PRB usage < 50%) or load is imbalanced
between cells.
l On a network with non-contiguous coverage from cells generated using SSB, if SSB
causes the equivalent cell-specific reference signal (CRS) power to be lower than that of
neighboring 2T2R cells, the local cell coverage shrinks.
l SSB increases the number of logical cells in contrast with 2T2R 3-sector networking.
This may decrease the handover success rate and increase the number of radio resource
control (RRC) connection reestablishments and the service drop rate.
l PDCCH power resource improvement may decrease the average downlink cell
throughput and downlink spectral efficiency if both PDCCH and Physical Downlink
Shared CHannel (PDSCH) resources are limited.
l PDCCH power resource improvement may increase the PDCCH power headroom in a
cell and interference to neighboring cells. Carrier setup may be affected if an over-large
PDCCH power headroom is configured.

Networking Adjustment
After SSB is enabled, a sector serving three cells will split into multiple cells served by beams
on both horizontal and vertical planes, with each sector covering a horizontal 120° azimuth, as
illustrated in Figure 5-3.
After the cell networking changes, you need to replan the network configurations, such as
neighboring cells, beamwidths, Physical Random Access CHannel (PRACH) configurations,
and physical cell identifiers (PCIs).
l Neighboring cells
The increase in the number of sectors results in more neighbor relationships. The total
number of neighbor relationships for each cell may reach the maximum value, requiring
adjustments to the existing neighbor relationships.
l Angles between beams
l Two optical fibers can be connected between the UBBPex2 and AAU. The optical fibers
must be of the same length. The number of carriers, system bandwidth, compression
mode, and networking mode must not exceed the CPRI capability of the UBBPex2.
l When one or two sector split cells are set up in a sector split group, they must be bound to
baseband processing units (BBPs). If more than two sector split cells are set up in a sector
split group, they can be optionally bound to BBPs. If binding is required, the cells
associated with all sector split cells in a given sector split group must be bound to the same
BBP. One BBP can be bound to massive MIMO cells associated with all sector split cells
in a maximum of two sector split groups. The following table provides MOs and
parameters related to binding between massive MIMO cells and BBPs.
l The parameters Cell.DlBandWidth, Cell.UlBandWidth, Cell.DlEarfcn, Cell.UlEarfcn,
Cell.UlEarfcnCfgInd, Cell.TxRxMode, Cell.CrsPortNum, and Cell.CPRICompression
must be set to the same values for cells in a given sector split group.
Before configuring a beamforming antenna, run the ACT BEAMDB command with the
OPMODE parameter set to SWFILE to activate the beam weight file. Perform subsequent
operations after the cell runs properly.

obtain the UE throughput increase when traffic is heaviest before the reconstruction, as
shown in Figure 5-4.
– Traffic in the original cell = L.Thrp.bits.DL
– Traffic after the reconstruction = Sum of the values of the L.Thrp.bits.DL counter
for all cells in a sector split group
– UE throughput in the original cell = (L.Thrp.bits.DL - L.Thrp.bits.DL.LastTTI)/
L.Thrp.Time.DL.RmvLastTTI

values of the L.Thrp.Time.DL.RmvLastTTI counter of all cells in a sector split

l Others
– The average downlink PRB usage of a single cell may decrease, while the eNodeB
traffic volume increases.
– The percentage of times rank 1 is reported (indicated by L.ChMeas.RI.Rank1) will
increase, resulting in a lower probability that any single UE will achieve the peak
data rate.
– The increase in the number of cells results in more cell edge areas and therefore
more handovers. The handover success rate may decrease, and the number of RRC
connection reestablishments and the service drop rate may rise.
6 DDB
6.1 Principles
DDB uses AAUs and beamforming to establish one cell. A cell can provide dedicated service
beams for multiple TM9 UEs at the same time. TM4 UEs are scheduled independently in a
cell.
DDB forms a fixed beam to serve one cell based on the settings of the
SectorSplitGroup.BeamTemplateId, SectorSplitGroup.BeamDeploymentMode, and
SectorSplitCell.CellBeamIndex parameters. DDB requires that the
SectorSplitGroup.BeamTemplateId parameter be set to 1, the
SectorSplitGroup.BeamDeploymentMode parameter be set to MODE_0, and the
SectorSplitCell.CellBeamIndex parameter be set to 0. Figure 6-1 shows DDB.
antennas in the uplink. The subsequent processing is similar to that of uplink 8-antenna
receive diversity.
NOTE
Each logical port of a cell served by a normal antenna is mapped to an independent physical channel.
The beams of a massive MIMO cell in which DDB is enabled can be formed through beamforming on
32 antennas. Therefore, signals transmitted from multiple logical ports by the cell are carried on the
same physical channel, achieving power gains. The power of each physical channel cannot exceed the
rated power of a single AAU channel. For the maximum CRS power, maximum carrier power, number
of CRS ports of cells on a carrier, and PA and PB values, see the related power configuration table.
DDB provides different functions based on cell configurations and UE capabilities. The
details are as follows:
If a cell meets the preceding conditions for supporting TM9, CSI-RSs can be transmitted to
TM9-capable UEs through four ports. The cell can provide multiple dedicated service beams
for multiple TM9 UEs at the same time to multiplex time-frequency resources between beams
and improve capacity. The eNodeB measures the Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP)
of TM9 beams based on uplink SRS quality and regards the beam with the largest RSRP
value as the target beam of the UE. To improve network performance:
l If line of sight (LOS) transmission prevails between the eNodeB and UEs, the UE
feedback information is accurate. In this situation, set the
CellMimoParaCfg.MuMimoWeightAdjStrategy parameter to
6.2.1 Benefits
System capacity increases considerably in urban areas where there is contiguous coverage.
The gain evaluation method is the same as that for SSB. For details, see 5.4.2 Activation
Verification.
In contrast with 2T2R 3-sector networking, the gains offered by DDB depend on the
following factors:
l Penetration rate of TM9-capable UEs compliant with 3GPP Release 10 and supporting 4-
port CSI-RS transmission
l Cell load
l Whether DDB-enabled cells provide contiguous coverage
l UE distribution in the cells
The gains are most noticeable when the following conditions are met:
DDB is suitable for high-traffic scenarios in urban areas. It is recommended when the
penetration rate of TM9-capable UEs is high (for example, over 70%) or when SSB is not
suitable.
6.2.2 Impacts
Network Impacts
l TM9-incapable UEs experience performance deterioration because of periodic CSI-RS
transmission in the cell when TM9 and this function take effect. The level of the
deterioration is dependent on the TM9-capable UE penetration rate and the CSI-RS
period.
l In addition, due to downlink MU-MIMO in TM9, more PDCCH symbols are used in the
downlink. As a result, the failure rate of allocating PDCCH resources to uplink
scheduling increases, and the average uplink UE throughput may decrease.
l PDCCH power resource improvement may decrease the average downlink cell
throughput and downlink spectral efficiency if both PDCCH and PDSCH resources are
limited.
l PDCCH power resource improvement may increase the PDCCH power headroom in a
cell and interference to neighboring cells. Carrier setup may be affected if an over-large
PDCCH power headroom is configured.

Networking Adjustment
The equivalent RS power of each port before and after DDB is enabled should be considered.
l If the RS power remains stable, DDB has little impact on network planning because the
downtilt of each cell will be the same as that of each original cell by default. You need to
preferentially adjust the mechanical downtilt.
l If the RS power decreases, network planning and optimization should consider downtilt,
RS power, and the settings of PA and PB.
Data preparation for activating PDCCH power resource improvement is the same for DDB
and SSB. For details, see Table 5-4.

SRSCfg FddSrsC MOD LBFD-0 Physical Meaning: Indicates the allocation mode of sounding
fgMode SRSCF 02003 Channel reference signal (SRS) resources in LTE FDD. This
G LEOFD- Manage parameter must be set when the SrsCfgInd parameter
LST 111305 ment is set to BOOLEAN_TRUE(True). If the
SRSCF Virtual FddSrsCfgMode parameter is set to
G 4T4R DEFAULTMODE(Default Mode), SRS resource
allocation is activated by default after a cell is
established, and SRS resources are allocated to UEs
that access the cell. If this parameter is set to
ADAPTIVEMODE(Adaptive Mode), SRS resource
allocation can be adaptively activated or deactivated
based on the cell load. After this parameter is set to
ADAPTIVEMODE(Adaptive Mode), settings of
