CHAPTER I

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

An eating problem is any relationship with food that find difficult.

Food plays an important part in our lives and most of us spend time

thinking about what we eat. Sometimes may try to eat more healthy, have

cravings eat more than usual or lose our appetite. Changing eating habits

every now and gain is normal. But if food and eating feels like its taking over

the students life then it may become a problem.

Lots of people think that if have an eating problem disorders there will

be over or under weight, and that being a certain weight is always

associated with a specific eating problem. This is a myth, anyone regardless

of age, gender or weight, can be affected by eating problems. Eating

problems are not just food. They can be about difficult things and painful

feelings, which you may be finding hard to express, face or resolve. Focusing

on food can be a way of disguising these problems.

Eating problem disorders can be effectively treated. Early

intervention improves the outcome of recovery in all eating problems

2

changes in eating problems behavior may be caused many different

illnesses, so a through physical examination by a medical practitioner.

There is no single main cause of eating disorders. Several factors are

generally at the root of eating disorders, comprising a combination of

genetic and psychological factors, problem within the family circle and the

cultural and social environment. This disorders is therefore often the

expression of a deeper malaise which the afflicted person feels unable to

control and strives to control his/her body weight by way of compentions.

There was no difference in the prevalence of eating disorders

among different ecobomic or ethic groups. The body mass index (BMI) was

higher for patients with eating disorders than those without, eating

disorders patients were 3 times as likely to be obese.

Eating problem disorders involve serious disturbances in eating

behavior, such as extreme and unhealthy reduction of food. Healthy eating

behaviour is based on two sensations hunger and satiety. Eating disorders

disrupt this mechanism. This disturbance is a physiological consequence of

malnutrition and can be reversed if diet is improved. It is eatimated that 9%

to10% of adult women suffer from compulsive - type eating problems. Men
3

represent 10% to 15% of people affected by an eating disorders. These

disorders are very often triggered during adolescence. Eating meals with

other people and thus withdraw from friends and family and have very low

self esteem.

Eating disorders cover a range of conditions that involve either too

much or too little food intake. Many cases of eating disorders are associated

with mental health and psychiatric conditions and eating disoreders have

the highest mortality rate among mental illnesses. Unfortunately, many

eating disorders go unrecognized and undiagnosed and untreated. Now, a

new study that teenagers and young adults with eating disorders present to

the emergency department (ED) at higher rates than previously thought.

This provides an opportunity for emergency physicians to identify risk

factors and symptoms associated with eating disorders and ofter early

intervention and treatment.

Most eating disoders involve focusing too much on your weight, body

shape and food, leading to dangerous eating behaviors. These behaviors

can significantly impact your body's ability to get appropriate nutrition.

4

Eating disorders can harm the heart, digestive system, bones, teeth and

mouth, and lead to other diseases.

People will respond differently to treatment and can take different

amounts of time to recover. Some people can be affected by more than one

type of eating disorder or find their symptoms changing type as they

recover. Someone with an eating disorder may also experience other

mental or physical health issues at the same time as their eating disorder.

Sometimes these can play a role in the eating disorder developing, or they

may develop alongside or because of the eating disorder. Treatment for

eating disorders should take into account other health issues the person

may have.

Disordered eating issues can develop during any stage in life but

typically appear during the teen years or young adulthood. Classified as a

medical illness, appropriate treatment can be highly effectual for many of

the specific types of eating disorders. Although these conditions are

treatable, the symptoms and consequences can be detrimental and deadly

if not addressed.
5

Although many of us would benefit from eating a bit less and

exercising more in order improve our helath and fitness, simply watching

what you eat is not eating disorders. Eating disorders are potentially life

threatining illnesses which are sirmultaneously psychological and physical in

nature. Theyvare characterized by a range of abnormal and harmful eating

behaviors which are accompanied and motivated by unhelthy beliefs

perceptions and expectations concerning eating, weight and body shape.

Eating disorders are illnesses in which the people experience severe

disturbances in their eating behaviors and related thoughts and emotions.

People with eating disorders typically become pre-occupied with food and

their body weight.

Disordered eating patterns can be caused by feelings of distress or

concern about body shape or weight, and they harm normal body

composition and function. A person with an eating disorder may have

started out just eating smaller or larger amounts of food than usual, but at

some point, the urge to eat less or more can spiral out of control and the

maladaptive patterns of eating take on a life of their own. Disordered eating

and dangerous weight loss behaviors have unfortunately become

normalized in our culture. Dieting, "clean eating" and compulsive exercise

6

are often precursors to full-bown eating disorders. There is a common

misconception that symptoms must be severe in order to seek professional

help, but any symptom is cause for concern and it is best to intervene early.

When disordered eating has a negative impact on quality of life, it's time to

seek help.

This study examined the current issues relevant to implementing

evidence-based practices in the context of outpatient treatment for eating

disorders. The study also examined the effectiveness of an outpatient

treatment program for eating disorders among a group of 196 patients

presenting with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or eating disorder not

otherwise specified. Results indicated that the program was effective in

significantly reducing eating disordered symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and

depressive symptoms. The author discusses implications of the research

and potential directions for future research. (PsycINFO Database Record (c)

2016 APA.

Eating disorders create significant challenges for teens and their

families in all aspects of their lives. Sometimes these challenges require

intensive treatment. Through our multidisciplinary approach, we address

7

physical, emotional, and nutritional health, academic functioning, and

family and peer relationships. Our goal is to provide holistic care that

supports adolescents and their families in finding new and healthy ways of

living.

So often, teens with eating disorders and their families feel isolated

and alone. Our program provides structure and support. It gives clients a

chance to connect, relate and problem solve with others that struggle with

similar issues. We help guide families in supporting their loved ones in a

safe and caring way.
