Topic No. 1: English for Academic Purposes

LS 221- English for Special Purposes: Theory, Methods and Materials

The first topic about English for Academic Purposes aims to impart knowledge as
to how a person should apply communicative skills in different specific fields. It made me
realize that the teacher’s role is indeed important in filling in the gaps in relation to the needs
of the students. Since EAP involves teaching and applying English language appropriately based
on the needs and purpose, it must be put into consideration that I, a teacher, who is expected
to teach the competencies to reach the goals in speaking in the English communicatively,
should also be well-equipped and knowledgeable.

Furthermore, as a teacher, there is a need to do a student profiling on the first day

of the class to review what are the needs, strengths, and talents of the students, Zohrabi
(2010) said that it is necessary that we consider several factors before going directly to speech
writing, such as: students’ objectives., needs, levels and interests, course and institutions’ goals,
availability of the resources. I believe that the Department of Education together with agencies
that manages employment should tap each other to be able to come up with curriculum that
emphasizes the application of speaking skills.

Zohrabi (2010) conducted a research that revolves around the topic about EAP
literacies. Zohrabi also added that it is necessary that we consider several factors such as
students’ objectives, needs, levels and interests, course and institution goals. Before going on a
journey into becoming a teacher, we need to take our students into consideration. In as much
as we need successful students who will lead the future on the next years to come, we,
teachers, should also take time to exert effort to connect with the students. A good rapport
built with them contributes meaningfully into successful teaching-learning process.

Since our country is a growing economy, I realized that our future leaders, who are
at the same time, my students right now, should learn the importance of speaking the English
language. Even the simple conversation using English will do, if this is done every day, this will
not affect the students much. I should engage them into meaningful discoveries, and varied
activities that will hone their interest, for learning to love something does not happen
overnight. Moreover, we should not forget that the techniques and strategies that we apply to
this student may not be appropriate for others. EAP all goes down to our students’ needs.

In the published paper of Namsook Kim (2016), the teachers; roles are again
mentioned. There is this thing called multidimensional characteristics when it come to the
teacher teching language. Additional to what has been said, Kim also added that there is the
increasing number of students who are enrolling in English-medu-ium schools. But the question
all goes down to “”Are the teachers really ready?” Are we ready?

Philippine educators and institutions are expected to be in pace with globalization.

Personally, what I noticed in the curriculum that we are using in DepEd are really idealistic,
which makes it good and at the same time bad for the learning process. Bad in a sense that
skills that may contribute to learn English as a communicative medium are all congested into a
limited time. This makes the objectives unattainable, making it hard for the teachers, and
stressful for the part of students. This is just my two cents.

Based on what I have observed, students do not seem to take English seriously.
This is true based on what I have experienced, and it makes me really sad. The words of
encouragement I give to my students everyday are not enough to make them want to learn. I
sometimes reflect on this matter, thinking whether the problem is me. Am I a good and
effective teacher? Or is the problem beyond my abilities to solve?

EAP is basically learning to communicate effectively using English. Imagine building

the future teachers, engineers, accountants, managers; and make them realize that learning
how to communicate effectively using English creates an advantage for them in their workplace
and even in the community as well. Simple as it may seem, this could be a challenging work for
teachers. For now, I will do whatever it takes to make my students love English.
