2019 Semester 1 Reporting – Year 3/4

English During this semester, students have planned, explored and created a range of texts including procedural, imaginative, persuasive and informative
texts. Students engaged in a range of learning experiences that gave them the opportunity to learn and understand the structure of specific texts
and to use language features that are relevant in specific text types. They have used a variety of strategies to engage in group and class
discussions, provide feedback, ask questions and make presentations on the content they have written. They have re-read and used strategies to
edit their writing, which allowed them to check their work for appropriate vocabulary, correct structure, and meaning. Students have engaged in
reading groups and have read texts that contain varied sentence structures, some unfamiliar vocabulary and images that provide extra
information. Students have predicted, read and analysed a range of text types and have answered comprehension questions to broaden and
extend their retention of information. They have participated in a Spelling Mastery lessons to focus on phonemic awareness, dictation, letter-
sound relationships and handwriting.

Maths During semester one students have learnt a range of mathematical concepts. They have explored the connection between addition and
subtraction and have represented multiplication and division by grouping into sets and solving simple problems using a range of strategies.
Students have studied odd and even numbers and used rules to predict and answer mathematical questions related to these numbers. They have
explored chance and data through simple chance experiments, recording data in lists, tables and graphs, and have interpreted and described
outcomes of data investigations. Students have also interpreted, explored and decoded the features of maps to follow directions and have
identified and classified angles in relation to a right angle.

Science Year 3 and 4
During this semester in science, students have studied and explored the natural processes and human activity that cause weathering and erosion
of Earth's surface. They have also investigated and sequenced key stages in the life cycles of plants and animals. Students have considered the
human and natural changes to an animal’s habitat and the effect of these changes on its life cycle and survival. They have used their science
knowledge to describe examples of where science is knowledge used in people's daily lives, pose and respond to questions about their
experiences and predict outcomes of investigations. They have recorded and represented observations and communicated ideas in a variety of
ways. Students have engaged in a variety of hands on activities to aid them in learning about scientific concepts.

Year 5 and 6
Throughout this semester in science, students have followed instructions and procedures, responded to questions, made predictions, used
science equipment safely, organised data and researched relevant information. They have compared and classified substances due to their
observable properties and have designed and conducted experiments to investigate and explain when materials go through reversible or
irreversible changes. Student have also explored the environmental conditions that affect the growth and survival of living things and have taken
part in creating and maintaining a lizard habitat.

Media Arts
Throughout this semester, students have explored a range of magazine cover genres and designs to analyse the elements included. They have
experiment with design and media technologies to create a digital magazine cover for a magazine topic of their choice.

Digital Technologies During this semester, students completed a 5 week unit on Digital Technologies. Students learnt to build computer games and design animations
by using the Scratch program. Students learnt and applied computational thinking, algorithmic thinking, problem solving, graphic design and
computer programming concepts through their digital designs and creations.

Health
Throughout this semester, students have investigated how emotional responses can vary and have identified and used strategies that promote
positive interactions with others. Students have also used decision-making and problem-solving skills to select and demonstrate strategies that
help them stay safe. They explored strategies to help reduce negative behaviour and have identified people who can help them make good
decisions and stay safe.

Deacon Behaviour Student is a responsible, reliable and mature student who shows respect for his teachers and peers inside and outside the classroom. He
consistently follows school rules and demonstrates an excellent commitment to his learning. Student welcomes the opportunity of leadership
Armstrong
when working in a group setting and is consistently willing to assist teachers and peers in the classroom. He is a great role model for younger
students.
Overall Student is a conscientious, hard-working student. He regularly volunteers to assist in classroom activities and seems comfortable in new
situations. Deacon is an independent and organised student who completes all tasks effectively and on time. He is always well equipped and
prepared for class, and remains an active learner throughout the school day. He is a co-operative student who works well with peers and in
turn, making him well liked amongst his peers. Student takes pride in the presentation of his work and consistently gives his best effort in all
tasks. Although student has insightful ideas, a goal for him is to contribute to class discussions. An excellent start to the year, well done!

Alexander Behaviour Student is an active student who generally shows respect for his teachers and peers. He finds significant challenges in following instructions
from a range of teachers and he is working towards identifying and regulating his reactions to problems that arise. Although student has
Badalyan
shown progress in accepting responsibility for his own actions, this is an ongoing area of improvement for him.

Overall Student is a bubbly and charismatic student who enjoys hands on learning. He enjoys having a conversation with friends at break and is
exceptionally compassionate towards his peers. Student takes an active role in class discussions and enhances them through insightful
comments. Co-operation with peers is a constant area of friction for student and he needs teacher scaffolding when working in small groups.
Student has tried hard this year, although he has not found the work easy. He needs regular guidance to organise materials and care for
belongings. He requires 1:1 supervision and frequent positive reinforcement to complete set tasks. He has built confidence when working
with specific staff members and does not always co-operate when supervised by an unfamiliar adult. A goal for student is to improve his
learning through co-operating with a variety of teachers.
