Answer either 1 or 2, either 3 or 4, and either 5 or 6. You are required to answer both 7
and 8. A total of five problems should be answered. Be sure to show complete solutions
and to box your final answers. The deadline is on Thursday, March 14.
1. Lockers in a row are numbered 1, 2, 3, . . . , 999, 1000. At first, all the lockers are
closed. A person walks by and opens every other locker starting with locker 2. This
means that lockers 2, 4, 6, . . . , 998, 1000 are now open. Another person walks by
and changes the state – closes a locker if it is open and opens a locker if it is closed
– of every third locker, starting with locker 3. Further, another person changes the
state of every fourth locker, starting with locker 4. This process continues until
1000. Which lockers will be in the closed state?
2. A map of a local town is shown in the figure below. Kenn lives at the corner of 4th
Street and Fairfield Avenue. Jastine lives at the corner of 8th Street and Appleton
Avenue. Kenn decides that he will visit Jastine once a day until he has tried every
different route to her house. The streets only run East and North. How many
different routes can Kenn take to get to Jastine’s house?

5. If we continue writing the integers from 2 through 5000 in the following table, in
which column will the number 2018 fall?

6. A box contains four slips of paper. On each slip is written one of the four digits 3, 5,
7, and 9. The slips are drawn from the box one at a time. As they are drawn, they
are placed from right to left to form a four-digit number. What is the probability
that the number formed is a prime number?
7. John and Jones are both part-time workers in the local pizza shop. The shop is
open seven days a week. John works one day and then has two days off before
he works again. Jones works one day and then has three days off before he works
again. John and Jones both worked on Tuesday, July 1st. On which other days in
July do the two work together?
8. Four dog owners share really tight bonds with their dogs. The four owners are
Iris, Ryan, Caleb, and Mia. The four dogs are Ryujii the Shiba Inu, Athena the
Labrador, Gunther the Dachshund, and Timmy the Pomeranian. Who owns what
dog? Use the following clues:
(a) Caleb’s pet would give friendly licks to all humans.
(b) For some strange reason, all Pomeranians do not like Iris.
(c) Ryan owns Gunther who sploots a lot.
(d) Iris once owned Ryujii, but had to give Ryujii away because her town was too
hot.
