Everything depends on your fingertips: The Pros and Cons of Technological Adnvancement

Are you an ordinary student who is having a hard time coping with your academic requirements? Are
you tired of flipping the pages of a century-old book for your assignments? The tiring-game is over.

Nowadays, with the robust advancement of Information Technology, it is highly prevalent that most
students would rely on electronically- produced materials for assignments and projects. They commonly
declare the words “IG mo” (meaning I-Google mo) every time their professors gave them lengthy
assignments that require hours of analysis and brainstorming. However, educators could not deny the
fact that as facilitators of learning, it is also essential that they should be equipped with the latest
technologies available to them. Their lack of knowledge to this advancement would possibly be a
shaming moment for them since students could spend their free time studying in advance, so teachers
should double their effort to study to outsmart their student inside the classroom.

Online platforms such as Google, Wikipedia and YouTube are the most common media that students
usually use for research. In a snap of a second, an inch away from their fingertips, they were able to
acquire knowledge. But, these advancements could cause various character and social deficiencies
especially to the younger ones. Exposure to advance technologies deteriorates the students’ capacity to
think critically, it eliminates interpersonal discussions during group works and greatly affects the
diligence of students in doing home works and projects.

In the area of Basic Education, this advancement could either be a help or a havoc. A havoc in the sense
that it decreases the child’s interest to study at home, it eliminates interaction with their parents, and it
allows them to be more dependent on the information they gather from the internet rather than asking
their parents. In a deeper sense, the child’s extreme exposure to internet could greatly influence his/her
character.

In a positive standpoint, these technologies could also be an avenue to further the knowledge of
students. This allows them to limitless opportunities of discovering their full potential in a minimum
supervision and allows them to be much more competent in this exponentially advancing world.

Seeing therefore the pros and cons for the fast growth of technologies in the 4th industrial revolution, it
is high time for both educators, parents and most especially students to have a supreme control over
these technologies to reach the optimum goal of creating a highly competent, well-organized and
progressive community.
