What 21st Century Skills Are Students Using?

● Students will work collaboratively to answer questions that use the multiplication law of
evaluating exponential expressions.
● Students will need to communicate mathematically with peers in order to successfully
answer the questions presented to them.
● Students will need to think critically to answer some of the later questions that present
expressions in the form of a power to a power.

Essential Vocabulary
● Base
● Exponent
● Coefficient
● Evaluate
● Square of a Number
● Power

Materials
● Student Chromebooks

Introduction/Engagement
● The teacher will briefly discuss the Mashup Math video that was assigned as the
previous night’s homework in preparation for practicing how to evaluate expressions that
utilize the multiplication law of exponents.
Lesson (Teacher Input, Guided, Independent Activities, etc.)
● The lesson will use data from the previous night’s Edpuzzle video assignment to
determine the level of direct instruction that will be needed before allowing groups of
students to work independently on problems during this lesson.
● Students will be formed into groups of 2 and will work on problems that require the use
of the multiplication law of exponents.
● Groups of students will record their answers on the worksheet provided, and the teacher
will circulate around the room, answering questions and providing guidance, when
needed.
● The last five to ten minutes of the lesson will be devoted to going over the answer to
each question to gauge student understanding and to allow students to reflect on the
multiplication law of exponents. As part of the closure of this lesson, students will be
asked to summarize the multiplication law of exponents for their classmates
● Homework will be to watch a Mashup Math video on Dividing Exponential Expressions in
preparation for tomorrow’s lesson. This will be an Edpuzzle video with questions
embedded to prompt student thinking and to provide the teacher with information
regarding student understanding.

Modifications
● The vocabulary terms reviewed in this lesson will be posted around the classroom in
Spanish for our English Language Learners.
● Questions from the practice worksheet will be printed in large font for students who have
a visual impairment.
● Questions will be more focused on strictly numerical expressions, as opposed to
algebraic expressions, for students who show through the Edpuzzle data that they need
additional reinforcement with evaluating basic exponential expressions.

Enrichment
● More examples that utilize the power to a power rule will be provided to students who
finish the practice worksheet with time to spare.
