Machine Elements I Solution HW # 1

Due: Wednesday, 17 October 2018)

1) (30 Points)
A steel beam AD with a 4 cm by 6 cm rectangular cross-section (see left side of the figure below) is
simply-supported at sections B and D as shown in the figure. A mass M = 25.5 kg is suspended from a
steel rope at section A (gravity is vertically downward) and a constant vertically downward force F =
750 N is applied at section C.
a) Draw the free body diagram, shear force diagram, and bending moment diagram for the beam.
Include the important numerical values, such as, the reaction forces at the simple supports B and D, the
maximum and minimum shear forces, and the maximum and minimum bending moments.
b) Locate the critical section of the beam and the critical element at the critical section. Draw the
critical element showing the state of stress on this element. Include the fixed XY coordinates.
c) Determine the maximum normal stress, the minimum normal stress, and the maximum shear
stress acting on the critical element of the beam.
a)

Free Body Diagram (FBD) of the beam:

Shear Force Diagram of the beam:

Bending Moment Diagram of the beam:

Summary of the results is as follows:

b)

The material is steel, which is a ductile material whose tensile and compressive strengths are the same.
Hence, the critical point is on the cross-section of C at the bottom surface of the beam, where the
possible failure might occur due to the maximum bending moment. At this point the bending moment
is positive and hence the bending stress x is tensile (positive) at the bottom of the beam. On the other
hand, the transverse bending shear stress is zero at this point. The plane stress element at this point is
given below.
Hence,

c)

At the critical point:

Principal normal stresses are

2) (40 Points)
The pipe shown below is loaded with a pipe wrench by forces of F = 1,800 N and P = 2,400 N. The
pipe has an inside diameter of di = 50 mm and an outside diameter of do = 2ro = 54 mm. Given
dimensions are a = 100 mm, b = 150 mm and c = 75 mm. The stress element A is located on the top
surface of the pipe at coordinates x = 0, y = ro and z = 0.
a) Find all the loads at A, i.e. force(s), moment(s) and torque(s).
b) Find all the stresses at this stress element A. Sketch this stress element with proper stress
directions and labels.
c) Draw (with scale) and label Mohr’s circle corresponding to the state of stress at A.
d) Find the principal stresses (1, 2) and extreme shear stresses (1, 2), and their angles (p, s),
and show them on the Mohr circle.
e) How much is the maximum shear stress (max)?
f) Sketch the stress elements on which the principal and extreme shear stresses are acting.
3) (30 Points)
Consider the shrink fit of a solid shaft with a diameter of 1.0025 in to an outer member (a hub), which
has an inner diameter of 1.000 in and outer diameter of 2.000 in. Both the shaft and hub are made of
carbon steel.
a) Find the pressure p developed at the contact surface.
b) For both the shaft and hub, find the tangential and radial stresses at the contact surface.
c) If the coefficient of friction between the shaft and hub is =0.15, how much axial force F is
required to dismount the assembly? The width of the hub is given as w=2 in. End-effects are
neglected in all calculations.
