Nokia Flexi Zone Solution

Nokia Flexi Zone is the most cost effective and highest
performing solution for adding capacity to existing macro
networks using an underlay of coordinated small cell
clusters.
Flexi Zone uses LTE (and optional Wi-Fi) to offload traffic,
add capacity and boost subscriber experiences in both
the indoor (public/enterprise) and outdoor hot zone
environments within a heterogeneous network.
The award-winning Flexi Zone features a novel zone-
based architecture comprising multiple low power access
points coordinated by a localized zone controller that
enables operators to offer very high user experience
while offloading unwanted data traffic from their macro
and core networks. Flexi Zone offers a holistic approach
and innovation to solve street level and indoor capacity
small cell underlay challenges.

Flexi Zone Multi-band Outdoor Micro Base Station (BTS)
Nokia TD-LTE 15A delivers improved uplink average cell
throughput and cell coverage Finding new sites for traditional
macro cells is increasingly complex and expensive. Small cells
will play a critical role in providing operators with a solution
that can be deployed easily and quickly in strategic locations to
add capacity. These smaller radius sites are simple to deploy
in lowcost, easily available locations such as light poles, traffic
lights, building walls and street level shelters. The critical
enablers for these lighter deployments are base station size,
low power consumption, wireless backhaul, and ‘all in one box’
solutions.
Leading Form Factor and Power Consumption
Flexi Zone Multi-band Outdoor Micro Base Stations use
state-of-theart System-on-Chip (SoC) and RFIC technology, to
create an industry leading compact form factor with low power
consumption. This integrated ‘all-in-one’ product provides a
cost effective solution that can boost capacity without the
deployment complexity and cost of traditional macro cells.
Macro Capacity and Macro parity
Flexi Zone Multi-band Outdoor Micro Base Stations’ ‘macro
like’ processing power allows the use of the same software
as Nokia’s macro base stations, making them very easy
to integrate into Heterogeneous Networks. Operators can
enjoy the same features available in macro cells, such as
easy software upgrade to LTE-Advanced and support by
the same NetAct Operations and Support System (OSS) and
intelligent Self Organizing Networks (iSON). In addition, they
offer the same capacity as Nokia’s macro base stations, run
the same industry acclaimed Smart Scheduler and associated
interference mitigation capabilities, bringing the highest
subscriber performance in dense urban areas.
Flexi Zone Multi-band Outdoor Micro BTS: >1Gbps peak
throughput and modular design
Flexi Zone Multi-band Outdoor Micro Base Station is a
compact outdoor capable small cell platform. Its modular
design supports multiple carriers across various frequency
bands(including 3GPP and 5GHz bands). The Flexi Zone
Multi-band Outdoor Micro Small Cell offers high performance
with a combined data rate of more than 1 Gbps in a compact
8l/8kg form factor. To serve the most demanding hot spot/
hot zones, operators can also deploy this platform by using
Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) and Carrier Aggregation (CA)
across licensed and unlicensed spectrum.
Flexi Zone Base Station also supports simultaneous Wi-Fi
access, integrated within a single unit allowing for fewer boxes
on the pole and shared services (i.e., power, backhaul, etc.).
Integrated Type-II Power over Ethernet (PoE) (PSE) capability
further eliminates power cables to the supporting boxes at the
site.

Flexi Zone Multi-band Outdoor Micro Base Station’s Wi-Fi
access module is based on carrier-grade hardware, designed
for outdoor environments. It incorporates dual compact Wi-Fi
2Tx2Rx MIMO 802.11ac/b/g/n/a radios that support centralized
authentication and policy management via RADIUS AAA server
or a Wi-Fi controller.
Ease of Deployment
Deployment and operation of complex heterogeneous
networks requires all involved network entities to be
well-configured with respect to their particular role and
location within the network, and to be context-aware. Self
configuration, often referred to as ‘plug-and-play’ or ‘no
touch’, is a crucial feature to reduce network implementation
and operational costs in macro networks, and is even more
important in heterogeneous networks. Integrated Bluetooth
functionality in the Flexi Zone Micro and Pico Base Station
eases initial staging, allows faster deployment and supports
troubleshooting in the field from ground level (i.e. no bucket
truck needed) using the Nokia. No Touch Troubleshooting
handheld application.
Hot Zone & Hot Spot Evolution
The Flexi Zone Multi-band Outdoor Micro Base Stations can be
operated stand-alone initially and then evolve via a software
upgrade into a full Flexi Zone architecture as hot spots grow
into larger hot zones or when more cells are needed to increase
coverage. This enables operators to scale up capacity virtually
without limit and with minimal impact to deliver a superior
customer experience while leveraging the small cell installed
base.
Design and Capabilities
The Flexi Zone Multi-band Outdoor Micro Base Station features
a compact single enclosure, designed for ‘simple installations,
whether pole mounted or wall mounted. The advanced modular
design enables faster time to market for the many variations
of technology and bands expected for outdoor small cell
deployments.
An integrated filter-diplexer combines LTE transmit and receive
antennas so only a single set of cellular antennas is required to
be connected to the unit. Additionally, internal filteringdiplexing
of the 2.4/5GHz Wi-Fi antennas further reduces the number of
antennas required on the unit. This enables the OMNI solution
to have up to four total antennas (two LTE, two Wi-Fi). An LTE/
Wi-Fi directional antenna kit is also available, providing the
flexibility for a deployed OMNI solution to be field upgraded
with minimal site impact and downtime should site coverage
requirements change.
An integrated RF-GPS and GLONASS antenna provides
synchronization when 1588v2 is not available. Since site
requirements vary, the Flexi Zone Multi-band Outdoor Micro
Base Station uses external antenna connectors should site
specific remote or integrated directional antennas be required.
