Paragraph for Questions 7 and 8
Specialized bacteria can be found in oil and sewage disposal plants. A bacteria that lives
in absolutely dark and essentially homogeneous soup faces a serious navigational problem. It
must sometimes rise for oxygen and then descend for an important part of its dinner.
One class of bacteria known as Magnetostactic Bacteria has solved the problem by
incorporating an iron oxide magnet inside the cell. The magnet inside a bacteria can cause it
to rise or fall depending on the relative orientation between magnetic moment and earth's
magnetic field given by B =  – z when  and  are positive constant and z is vertical up
distance.
Because of the random thermal motion (Brownian movement) relative orientation is randomly
changed so that a bacteria can both rise for oxygen and descend for food. Actually such small
magnets of bacteria string together to form large magnets of moment M. Assume that the
formula for the field of magnetic dipole moment is valid even for small distances.
Two bacteria of magnetic moment M each align to form a chain of length d. The energy of
Brownian movement of bacteria is kT where k is boltzmann's constant and T is the absolute
temperature. This movement tends to destroy the ordering arrangement of the bacteria if
interaction energy of two bacteria becomes smaller than the Brownian movement energy.

Paragraph for Questions 7 and 8
Due to the difference in the spatial arrangement of the ligands within the coordination
sphere, the phenomenon of stereo-isomerism arises. In a tetrahedral structure, relative
position of each ligand is the same having the bond angle ~109° this is why, in a tetrahedral
structure, there is no geometrical isomerism. But in square planar complex and octahedral
complexes relative positions of the ligand are not equivalent so that they can show
geometrical isomerism.
The square planar complexes are generally optically inactive but octahedral complexes can
produce optical activity.
7. Which of the following complexes show geometrical isomerism but not show optical isomerism
(A) [PtBrCl(NH3)(Py)] (B) [Co(Gly)3]
(C) [Co(NH3)3(NO2)3] (D) [Co(EDTA)]–1
